Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday #52

Cover by Danielle Fine

Welcome to another #sffsat snippet. Apologies for missing last week but it's the half term holiday in the UK, and having my three little monsters angels home seriously impacts my writing/reading/blogging time. :P So, back to my upcoming sfr release Terms & Conditions Apply - still in final edits at the moment - and Marie is amused by the archaic gesture from a youthful-looking , male-form avatar that's still trying to press its services on her...

No, not he - it, she reminded herself. It had probably been programmed with that courtly gesture as part of its repertoire. An affectation and nothing more.
Still it smiled at her and waited for her to move.
“What’s your designation?” she asked.
One perfect eyebrow lifted. “My name is Soren.” Was it her imagination or did it seemed amused by her question? Androids and constructs weren’t allowed names.

  1. So, I'm guessing Soren is neither an android or a construct...or is getting uppity, and needs re-programming. :-)

  2. Android with a sense of humour? Or just very sophisticated programming? My suspicion is that he is a real person, perhaps in disguise, risking blowing his cover in order to chat up a pretty woman. I like the snippet!

  3. All of the implications that go along with this back and forth are fantastic. I love when humans interact with intelligent, human-like "constructs." So, if they're not allowed names, then what exactly is he? More than what she thinks, I imagine. Great snippet.

  4. Hmm, curious... Leaves many question up in the air. Either Soren needs a reboot (or a kick up its metallic aft) or something MORE is happening. Good stuff.

  6. Aw, poor androids and constructs not being allowed names. :(

  7. Soren be more than a mere avatar methinks.

  8. Hrrrrm. Definitely more to this avatar than meets the eye.

Great snippet! Can't wait to read more. :)

  9. When you're having to remind yourself that he's an "it" and not a "he"... you're in trouble *grin*
