Episode 1, Freedom Bound: Prologue (Currently FREE on Amazon)
As she slid, the momentum increased. She felt another rush of calm enter her system. Adrenaline. She, like every good fighter pilot, used the rush of oxygen to her brain to clear her thoughts and initiate her instincts. She counted the levels and threw herself to towards the maintenance handle as she reached what she judged to be the right deck. The deck that held her shiny wings. As she projected herself forward, her foot scrambled for purchase while her cheekbone made contact with the side of the chute. Her head thumped and bounced back. Her hand found a hold and stretched the muscles in her arms as she fought the downward momentum. With body strained backwards away from the hatch, every muscle and sinew engaged to pull herself aright. Once again, she slammed into the side of the grimy chute, banging her nose and forehead. “Mother cracking son of a …” The blood from her nose spattered her smeared and greasy blue uniform pants. Her arms, unfettered by sleeves, squeaked across the metal as she righted herself and leaned into the hatch. Before she turned the handle she listened. Again. No weapon fire, no running feet on grates. Was she too late? She twisted the handle and pushed. As she did, the ship rocked and thundered with the blast of attack. Corrie fell into the corridor onto her knees. Righting herself onto one knee, she stood and pulled down the grimy gray t-back shirt over her slim hips.
Episode 2, Freedom Bound: Unhinged
She woke up with a raging hangover. Her eyes focused on a blinking message bot that hovered above her bunk. It was a note from a solicitor who represented a client in the outer rim in Cordoba’s West Quad territories. This was a request for her appearance in their offices. Corrie felt her heart pump in her chest. It thumped hard. She was alone, no protective job or government or corporation and now a solicitor wanted her? She sent a message to Jody, who had passed her law certs before being mandatorily recruited at the same time as Corrie.
“What do I do?”
“It’s an attorney’s office?”
“Yeah,” Corrie mumbled, still wincing and holding her head.
“Get over there and don’t sign anything. They’re not the law, you don’t have any further debt, that’s been expunged by Frobisher or Cordoba according to the contract of your release. I have no idea what it means but if it’s the outer rim, Corrie, it could be your lucky day.”
Episode 3, Freedom Bound, Mateu
As she walked, Corrie considered the people around her as they came into focus. Were they also from the ship? She’d never actually thought about that before. Were they all in the same virtual environment if they chose the same scenario or were they different?
That was when something came out from the bushes. Something big and blonde. “Boo!” he said as he stood blocking her way. “You following me?”
“What? Is this part of the program?” She hadn’t considered that there was a fight simulator attached to the running program.
He hunched menacingly. “Sure.” He smiled with a grin of self assurance. “I’m whatever you want me to be.”
“I want you to be gone.”
“Ha. You’re a funny one.” He stepped closer.
Corrie reached for her visor to turn the simulation off but he caught her hand. “Oh, no you don’t. I’ve seen you around the ship. Slinking around and pretending you’re better than the rest of us. Thinking your stuff don’t stink. Well, you you… do. You smell like you want a nice, long hot…”
He didn’t finish his sentence. The heel of her palm hit the center of his face with a crunch.
Episode 4: Coriander
“I have less than 30 standard sol days to figure this out, Jody. Or I’m going to be indentured here until I can pay it off. I’ll be right back to where I was before Frobisher unleashed me.”
“I intend to keep you off that leash. I just need to look at the contract before I give you anything. Hold onto hope, Corrie.”
“If you pull this off, old friend, you have a place with me. You know that, right?”
“Yeah, I do.”
They text-talked for a bit more while Corrie sent the contracts on. Little by little, she began to feel like there was hope. Something might be able to be done. Even if they couldn’t get out of the contract, they could find a way to earn enough with the contract to let Corrie keep the ship. But they had to do it soon, before Cordoba took over ownership rights, before Cordoba owned Corrie.
