Meet the #Author Monday - Deborah A Bailey #scifi #romance

Please tell us a bit about yourself:

I was a software developer for many years, but after I escaped from corporate, I became a technical writer. My all-time favorite shows are Star Trek, Twilight Zone and Law and Order. So, believe it or not, when I write fiction I manage to mix all those elements together. I live in NJ but really wish I could spend my winters in the Caribbean. Science Fiction is my genre of choice, but I've also written paranormal romance and I have a few ideas for other genres I'd like to try.

Tell us about Hathor Legacy: Revelations:

Hathor Legacy: Revelations is the 3rd book of the Hathor Legacy SFR series. This book is the end of a cycle for the main characters, Nadira and Jonathan. The 1st and 2nd books introduced them and the history of the planets Hathor and Astarte. In this book, the conflicts between the corporate government running Hathor and the PSI groups (made up of descendants of the original settlers from Earth) finally come to a head. I wanted to tie up the storylines and bring things full circle. There are a few twists and turns along the way and some surprises.

What inspired you to write this particular story?:

The original idea for the story came to me when I was watching a documentary about Franklin D Roosevelt, of all things! It talked about what happened after he contracted Polio, which at the time was a prevalent disease in the U.S. That got me thinking about what would happen if a disease changed a person's DNA. How would their lives be different after the sickness was over? That's what inspired me to write about the PSI groups in the series. Their sickness is a result of a virus released during the terraforming on Hathor, and the survivors end up developing different PSI abilities. The idea for the corporate government came from my own experiences working in corporate. Corporate culture is a world all its own. I was glad to leave it, but at least now I can use my experiences in my stories.

Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:

For me, either the name or personality comes first. Right now I have a character for my next Hathor Legacy book, but I don’t have a name for her. I'm going to wait until I start writing her and see what comes. When the character comes first, it takes me a while to find a name that really connects for me.

Any tips for aspiring authors?:
Write everyday
Take classes and/or find mentors to help you to develop your craft.
Be open to constructive criticism

Questions for fun:

What super-power would you choose?:
Flying would be nice. That way I could get where I want to go without always having to drive. Even better, I could get a nice view on the way.

Which fictional universe would you like to live in and why?:
The Star Trek universe, of course! It's my favorite science fiction series, and I'm Mr. Spock's biggest fan girl. It combines action, adventure, exploration and diverse cultures. What's not to like?

Your instrument of choice?: I know this has nothing to do with Star Trek or science fiction, but I could do some serious damage if I had a wand like Harry Potter's. Of course I mean, "damage" in a good way.

Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster, Butterbeer or Romulan ale?:
Romulan ale all the way.

Coffee, tea or wine?:
Coffee before work and wine after.

And to finish:
What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!):
Tough to pick just one! One of my favorites is a book called, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's a story about cloning and the story is told through the POV of one of the clones. It's not defined as science fiction, but I think it could fit into that genre. It's also a bittersweet love story, which is another reason I really enjoyed it.

Favourite genre and why?:
Science fiction will always be my favorite because of the variety of stories I can write. For instance, in The Twilight Zone series they took contemporary themes and placed them in otherworldly settings. There's a lot of freedom in being able to explore ideas without the restrictions of the everyday world.

Favourite colour?:
Red

Upcoming news and plans for the future?:
I've got a paranormal romance to finish for my Family Pride series. Also, I have plans to write Hathor Legacy: Exile, which will feature a secondary character from the trilogy. Hopefully I can get a couple more stories in before the year is over!

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!

Hathor Legacy: Revelations – Book Three of the Hathor Legacy Series

An enemy returns to spark new tensions between the Guardians and Novacorp. In the midst of the crisis, Nadira is given information about her parents that threatens to destroy her relationship to the Guardians and to Jonathan Keel.

While Nadira searches for answers, Jonathan is enticed into the hedonistic world of the Novacorp executive class. His entertainment club attracts the elite of Hathor, but his notoriety comes with a price.

The worlds of the Guardians and Novacorp are put on a collision course where only one side may come out on top. Nadira is called on to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the legacy of the First Families, the original settlers of Hathor, while Guardians, Kasema and Deshtu PSI groups are faced with the choice to unite or be brought completely under Novacorp control.

Old scores are settled and long-hidden truths are revealed, and at the end Nadira and Jonathan’s relationship and their world will never be the same.
