Tuesday Teaser - Super Starrella by Aurora Springer #YA #superhero

Excerpt
Estelle woke. Surreal streamers of color swirled behind her eyelids. Her head felt dizzy and her stiff body ached. Questions crawled into her mind. What had happened? Where was she? Who was she?
She cracked her eyes open. A white blur filled her field of vision. She tried to rub her eyes, but her hand was fastened at the wrist. Wriggling each part of her body, she discovered cold metal bands pinning her forehead, her arms and legs. Fear shivered through her tethered body and her mind whirled in confusion.
Fighting off panic, she forced herself into a wary calm. Gradually, her vision cleared and memories crept back. She was Estelle Wright. Seventeen years old, on her way to college.
What had happened to her? More memories crowded into her foggy mind. Images flashed, a black cat pouncing at her, an orange warning sign, a white horse rearing into explosions of green and white light. Spotty, the dappled mare, had ridden into a deafening blast on the army firing range.
Was she in a hospital? Estelle stared up. Curved glass enclosed her body. Above the transparent cylinder, glossy lines decorated the white ceiling. Her gaze traveled along the interleaved spiral paths. Blinking, she wrenched her eyes away from the hypnotic patterns.
Voices drifted to her ears from outside her room. They seemed to be discussing her.
“She is very young for the activation.” A woman’s impassive voice, judging by the high pitch.
The gruff voice of a man said, “Can we trust a native like her? Our need is urgent. We are so few and the enemy grows more intrusive.”
Estelle held her breath, intent on listening to the conversation.
A second man said, “She is not the first, nor the youngest. She is nearly eighteen.” The nasal twang hit a familiar chord. The image of his sullen face and black ponytail flew into her mind, Toby, the hunky young man with the motorbike. What was he doing in this strange place? Curiosity dampened her fears and sharpened her hearing.
The first man asked, “What do you know of this girl, Tobarian?”
 “She is paired with a mare as her Farleon companion.” Toby’s twang again. Was his name really Tobarian?
“Excellent! Set her free and watch for her powers to emerge. We need every recruit for our cause.” The man in charge sounded enthusiastic.
The woman said, “Sol Farleon, the girl may wake soon. We expected her to be unconscious for at least twenty-four hours. But, she keeps rousing and must be dosed back to sleep. Her body requires time to adapt to the transformation. The next cycle will finish in two minutes.”
“We don’t want her to eavesdrop on our conversation. Activate the block and we’ll leave her to your ministrations, Mir Celeste,” the older man ordered.
“I’ll start the wake cycle,” the woman said. Their voices faded. Estelle assumed they had muted the sound in some manner.

Blurb
Fledgling superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse combat vicious villains in the skies of Atalanta.
The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.
Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans.
Young adult superheroes, quirky animal sidekicks, aliens amongst us, and a sweet romance enliven this fun adventure. Book 1 of the Secret Supers.

Super Starrella will be 99c from May 3-9th

Tuesday Teaser - Grand Master's Mate by Aurora Springer #scifi #romance #excerpt

Pumping water from a spout in its base, the great shell maneuvered out of the narrow inlet towards the open ocean. They sailed past a harbor with catamarans moored on the docks. Round huts with conical roofs clustered behind the docks.
The tall sail of Calluma unfurled and caught the wind. Their strange ship gathered speed, rocking up and down with the waves. The shell boat hummed a song, “Splish, splash, waves crash round Callama.”

The wind picked up and the Callama sped over the waves. Athanor threw a windproof psi shield over their heads so they could stare into the distance without squinting through the gale.
Glancing at Violet, Athanor requested, “Ask the Callama how long we have to travel to reach the damaged area.”
She transmitted his question and the sea beast answered, “Hours, flowers, until the moon tide changes.”
“A long time if we have to wait for the next tide,” Violet said, pursing her lips in regret.
“AguaSalva is a small planet,” Amarylla rustled. “Three moons and many tides.”
Five tentacled Bollerol whistled, “High tide to low is four standard hours in this season.”
The sun sank into the green ocean and the crescent of a moon rose into the sky before they reached their goal. At length, Callama’s shell slowed to a halt, and rocked in the gentle swell of the green, foam-flecked waves.
The great shell hummed, “Weep, deep, Callama dives.”
Bollerol translated through its spout, “Callama enters the deeps. Shell sections will seal together. Ride inside or out?”
“By thunder, I’ll swim outside the shell and see where I’m going,” Athanor growled, pulling down his faceplate.
“Pull me with you,” Violet said, attaching her breather tube. The Grand Master could travel underwater as easily as in the air. Wrapping his arm around Violet’s waist, he vaulted into the water and grasped hold of a ridge on the exterior of Callama’s shell.
“Brightness will cling to the outer shell,” Amarylla agreed.
The orange Bollerol slid to the base of the boat and the two halves of the shell closed. Amarylla’s roots coiled around the shell. Tipping on end, Callama sank below the waves, dragging the two Grand Masters and Violet under the water.
Translucent green water surrounded them and lines of bubbles drifted in the wake of the great shell. Strange slow songs of the sea creatures washed against Violet’s senses. The green ocean darkened as they descended farther from the sunlit surface.
As they swam deeper, the quiet waters were threaded with thin cries of terror.
I sense the attackers are below us,” Violet informed Athanor.
Three pairs of bright yellow eyes on the tips of dark ribbons converged on Callama. The ribbon eels wriggled around the shell boat and Violet understood their vibrations. “Our homes are cracked. Our children are eaten.”
Death, slaughter, craze the sand city.” Callama’s slow hum was quickened by horror.

#Author Interview - Aurora Springer #scifirom #free

Author Interview for Aurora Springer & The Lady is Blue
(Note, to paraphrase Liza O’Connor, both are scientists but one is FREE from 24-26th.)

Please tell us a bit about yourself:
I work as a scientist during the day and write novels in my spare time. I have invented adventures in weird worlds for as long as I can remember. My novels include science fiction and fantasy with romance, mystery and a sprinkle of humor. I was born and educated in the UK and now live in Atlanta with my husband, a dog and two cats to cuddle. Our two sons are undergraduates at university. My hobbies include outdoor activities like watching wildlife, hiking and canoeing.

Tell us about The Lady is Blue:
What inspired you to write this particular story?: This story combines my idea for an unusual mutant with the collisions of two different cultures – one with a rigid class/caste system and the other relaxed and fun-loving (the sixties on another planet). I wrote the story some thirty years ago when I was a researcher at Yale University and the tensions of the faculty creep into the story. I’ve put aliens and human scientists in the cafeteria on top of the Kline Biology Tower among other places.

Please share a favourite snippet from your book:
The Blue rushed towards her, brandishing a wide blade like a meat cleaver. Lucy grinned in fierce concentration, backing away slowly as if terrified. He was very eager to disable a smaller, more vulnerable opponent. Her combat training was superior. An icy calm settled over her as she crouched alertly before the furious Trapie.
Just as she had anticipated, the young Blue swept his blade down with his whole strength. The cleaver slashed toward her head. With an agile sidestep, she avoided the blow and grabbed his arm, jerking down strongly. The thin Blue slammed to the ground and slid across the floor. The knife whirled from his grasp.
Lucy straightened and looked up. Sa Kamizan was staring at her in amazement. He was wild-eyed and panting from exertion. Two Red Atrapako lay on the floor, and he held another sword. The crowd was deathly silent.
Sa Kamizan picked up the second blade. Lucy rotated to scan the circle of faces. No other assailants appeared. Sa Kamizan was also scanning the crowd silently. He stepped over the red bodies to Lucy. “Do you have a weapon?” His chest heaved with every breath and Lucy knew he was exhausted.
She drew out her laser. “I’ll demonstrate,” she said fiercely. She swiveled in a half circle, menacing the spectators with her weapon. Then, she raised the laser and sliced through the cord supporting a large banner mounted on one wall. The banner crashed to the ground as several nearby Atrapako jumped out of the way.
Sa Kamizan wielded a knife in each hand. “Hold the gun ready, Lucy.” He draped one large arm casually over her shoulders. “We walk out slowly.”
 ~~~
 Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:
The personality and possibly the appearance come first. The name usually comes later.  The female protagonist in The Lady is Blue, Dr. Lucy Stannis, is named after the Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”.
Any tips for aspiring authors?:
Don’t expect your first draft to be the final one. Writing a good story takes hard work and there are many other aspects involved in publishing a novel.
Questions for fun:
If you had the power of time travel, is there anything you would go back and change? Why/why not?:
No. Let’s just enter a parallel universe.
What super-power would you choose?: Flying is my favourite superpower.
If you could have three wishes, what would they be?:
World peace, finding intelligent extraterrestrial life, and, well, the first two might be contradictory so I’ll hold my third wish in reserve for an emergency.
Coffee, tea or wine?: Yes, depending on the time or day or how I feel.
What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!):
I re-read Jane Austen’s books each year and also enjoy Andre Norton’s books. My ambition as an author is to combine the creative world building of Andre Norton with the humor and romance of Jane Austen.
Favourite genre and why?: Science fiction or fantasy with romance. I prefer adventures in strange places with a happy ending for the couple.
Favourite colour?: Rainbow – I like many colors, blue, purple, orange, green, sometimes mixed together.
Upcoming news and plans for the future?:
I plan to complete the third book in the Grand Master’s Trilogy, which combines portals to exotic planets with weird alien and the psychic powers of the Grand Masters. Next, I hope to write a superhero series and complete a space opera from my files.
Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!
The Lady is Blue is FREE from 24th to 26th September.
Tuesday #Teaser - GRAND MASTER’S PAWN by @AuroraSpringer #scifirom
Blurb
A thousand years in the future, wars and portal failures disturb the fringes of the galaxy. On Terra, twenty-two year old Violet Hunter seems an ordinary student of the Space Academy, who dreams of exploring unknown planets. She applies to serve as the pawn of one of the twelve Grand Masters, although her hidden talent of empathy makes her ineligible. Violet has defied the prohibition against psychics for half her life. Why should she stop now?
Isolation is the penalty for a Grand Master’s great power because their touch is deadly to a normal person. The Grand Master with the griffin avatar selected the girl with the star-shaped birthmark in spite of her father’s dire prophesy. He is suspicious about his disobedient pawn, yet he cannot deny the success of her missions to strange planets where she finds more than he expected.
Violet seeks the truth about the mysterious Grand Masters. Who or what are they? Do they threaten or benefit civilization? While searching for answers, Violet does the unthinkable. She makes a bargain with her obnoxious Grand Master and challenges him to meet her face to face, risking her secret to discover his purpose. She plunges into an impossible love and a world of intrigues. Will she survive the vicious conflicts?
Excerpt:
Violet was led along the adjacent corridor to hear the instructions of her Grand Master. She was eager to meet this important person who would guide her through the missions on different planets. They stopped in front of a door bearing the heraldic symbol of a griffin. Inside was a small unlighted chamber.
“Wait for Grand Master.” The furry alien pushed her inside and closed the door firmly.
The room was so dark, that at first, Violet could see nothing. Suddenly, two blue beams emerged from the round eyes of a stone gargoyle and cast a weird light over the walls of the small room. Very faintly, she sensed a distant masculine presence. Violet blinked, and the gargoyle resolved into a winged griffin with blue eyes and a cruel beak of a mouth. She guessed the griffin was an avatar for her Grand Master, since she perceived no powerful entity inside the room. She felt a thrill of anticipation as the eyes flared to a brighter blue.
A deep, resonant voice spoke, “I am the Grand Master and you will serve as my pawn.”
“Yes, Grand Master,” Violet said, refusing to show fear at the eerie, disembodied voice. “What may I call you? Do you have a name?”
“You will call me Grand Master,” the haughty voice held an unpleasant edge.
Violet resolved to assert her independence, and asked indignantly, “Grand Master, do your pawns have individual names? Or do you call them by numbers?”
The room vibrated and psychic pressure built up against her. “You are insolent, Violet Hunter!” the Grand Master growled.
Shivering at the menace in his words, she stepped back against the wall, and instinctively shielded her mind. Had she been too assertive? Of course, he knew her name from the Academy records. His psychic power was impressive considering he was not physically in the room. Unexpectedly, Violet sensed a faint drift of amusement, the mental equivalent of a smile. She was unsure if it was her empathic talent, or a glimpse he had permitted her.
“Hunter is a good name for your vocation,” he remarked in a milder tone.
Violet stiffened. He must never learn the truth. She hunted him.
His gruff voice grew severe again, “I have taken a chance by selecting you. Remember, you are on probation. You must prove yourself worthy to serve as my pawn.”
“My qualifications are excellent,” she said, nettled by his antagonistic attitude. Surely, he had checked the records for her performance at the Academy.
His deep voice rose in volume, and resonated through the small chamber. “You will perform the missions exactly as I command. I do not permit any deviations from my strategy. Do you understand, Pawn?”
“Yes, Grand Master,” she said, trying to sound compliant. Who was he to plan a detailed strategy? He would be safe in his palace, or wherever Grand Masters chose to live, while she would be working in hazardous conditions.
Tuesday #Teaser - The Lady is Blue by @AuroraSpringer #scifi #romance
Blurb
The peaceful human colonists on the remote planet of Eden welcome alien refugees in their crippled spaceship. The alien Atrapako have spiky crests, sharp claws, and scales of four colors covering massive humanoid bodies. Their rigid class system conflicts with the party-loving human society. The intrepid Dr. Lucy Stannis, a scientist and undercover agent of Terra, is both curious and suspicious of the aliens. She befriends the captain of the alien spaceship, the impressive and devious Blue, Sa Kamizan Veedak, who led the escape from their hostile home planet through the hazards of space to the safety of Eden. Their tenuous friendship is threatened by assassination attempts, and sabotage by humans and aliens. They must learn to fight together to survive. What strange secret are the Atrapako hiding? Can they overcome their cultural instincts and co-exist peacefully with humans on Eden? Lucy struggles to discover the secret of the aliens in a race against time before the colony is lost.
Excerpt
She leapt over the line with a warning yell. Just as the Red hit the floor, two Atrapako raced across the line behind Sa Kamizan. Both wielded long knives. Sa Kamizan was alerted to the new threat and tackled the bulky Red close to him. He was still unaware of Lucy and the second assailant.
Lucy jumped into the center, drawing the attention of the second attacker. The Blue rushed towards her, brandishing a wide blade like a meat cleaver. Just as she had anticipated, the young Blue swept his blade down with his whole strength. The cleaver slashed toward her head. With an agile sidestep, she avoided the blow and grabbed his arm, jerking down strongly. The thin Blue slammed to the ground and slid across the floor. The knife whirled from his grasp.
