Scream! For the Cure - Why Cate Peace is Screaming #cancer #charity

“The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” – C.C. Scott

Thanks to Pippa for allowing me some space on her blog!

I wanted to take some time to talk about something important to me, and I’m sure to a lot of you, too. Cancer. The Big C. That word. Ugh. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by it in some way.

According to the Cancer Institute, an estimated 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 589,430 people will die from the disease, just this year. That’s over a third of the population. Cases in the UK are a bit more manageable—331k this year, but if you ask me, that’s still 331k too many.

This year, anyone in my family could be among the 1.6 million new cases of cancer.

Including me.

It’s terrifying to think about, especially considering healthcare in the US. My family history includes, but is not limited to: renal, lung, bone, pancreatic, ovarian, and breast. I’m at risk for cervical cancer as well. So needless to say, I really want cancer to bite it, bad.

In light of my family history and the number of people and pets I’ve lost to cancer, I wanted needed to do something. Two years ago, an idea hit me like a bolt of lightning (okay, maybe not that dramatic, but still). Halloween is my favorite holiday. I write erotic romance. Both of those can involve a fair amount of screaming, if you do it right. So Scream! For the Cure was born.

Over the years, I’ve been incredibly lucky and blessed to make a lot of friends and connections within the writing community. YA authors, romance authors, paranormal and horror and suspense, and the wonderful thing about authors is that they are generous. It’s one of the strongest communities a person can be part of, so when I put out the call last year for the first Scream! auction, 32 fantastic authors answered the call, some of whom I’d known for years, some for months, and some I met through the auction itself. And don’t get me started on the readers. Without readers, this wouldn’t even be a thing. We ended up raising almost $400 for Stand Up 2 Cancer, and that was with me having absolutely no idea what I was doing, and those authors and readers being incredibly patient.
So, what is Scream! For the Cure, you ask?

Every year, a group of amazing authors join me for a month-long auction event every October. We have different virtual baskets, though some contain physical swag or books as well. This year, there’ll be a lot of guest posts from the participating authors and some giveaways as well, so you’ll want to stay up with the auction hashtag #scream4thecure and the official site:
screamforthecure.wordpress.com

This year’s auction will benefit Dyin’ 2 Live, a non-profit wish-granting program run by the wonderful people at Fxck Cancer. I had a chance to meet someone from the organization last year, and the more information I learned about them, the more I wanted to help out. The funds won’t go to cancer research this year, but it’ll go to a cause just as important: providing hope to those waging war against this horrific disease. To learn more about this year’s charity, visit: makingdreamshappen.org
For those of you who don’t know, Pippa and I have been friends for a while now. She’s by far one of the most generous people I’ve ever met, and she and I have some similar goals, including supporting cancer research and charities. She’s always a big contributor to the auction and this year, she’s donating almost everything she’s written. Thanks again, Pippa!

Tuesday #Teaser -Ember's Secret by Cate Peace @lexcade #paranormal #foodie #romance

The bell dinged and broke Ember from her morose thoughts. Plastering on her best please-buy-my-food-and-come-back smile, she smoothed the front of her apron. Three people sat clustered at a table near the door, all hunched over the menus and talking quietly. She always hated interrupting, but she had a job to do. “Hi, I’m Ember. Can I help you?”
The trio looked up, and she had to catch her breath. These weren’t her usual customers; by now, she’d learned exactly the kind of people who came into her restaurant, and she wondered what had happened to bring these three in.
Besides, men as attractive as the one staring a hole through her did not show up here. Ever.
“Actually,” he said, “I’m really intrigued by the menu. What would you recommend?”
Despite herself, she grinned. Until now, she’d been cooking Maori food in the hope that her sisters would come home. Now someone wanted her opinion? “How hungry are you?”
“Very.”
An unexpected heat zipped through her chest. Of course, he had to be gorgeous, with sun-kissed, wavy blond hair; cheekbones that could cut glass; and the bluest eyes she’d ever seen on another person. Approachable, but still… Gorgeous. “I’d go with the stew, then.”
“Sounds perfect.”
She took the rest of their orders and disappeared into the kitchen for a few minutes before grabbing their drinks. He’s a cute customer. That’s all. Though she’d met attractive men in the café before, usually they were with their girlfriends or wives or college drinking buddies, but they had come in. And a few men in Casper had caught her fancy. Her lifestyle hadn’t prevented her making a physical connection, just…. She didn’t believe in soul mates or any of that romantic nonsense. Still, something stirred in her that never had before, like her soul finally had a purpose.
Breathing deeply, she returned to the front and poured two sodas and an iced tea. When she dropped them off at the table, he smiled at her in a way that was far more than polite, almost seductive.  “I like your restaurant. Whatever you’ve got cooking back there smells amazing. What is it?”
“Lamb,” she replied. “It’s kawakawa-encrusted.”
He quirked up his eyebrow. “I’ve never had kawakawa.”
“It’s very peppery. Gives the lamb a beautiful flavor. I could bring some out for you.” Never before had she offered that, but then again, no one had ever asked.
With a grin, he said, “I would love that.”
“I’ll be right back.” Giddy, she returned to the kitchen. Someone wanted to learn about her food! She wanted to skip or dance back to the kitchen. When she opened the oven, the full scent of the lamb enveloped her, and she breathed it in, calming herself down. Who was this man? Did he love food as much as she did? She didn’t want to seem rude, but she wanted to find out everything she could about him. Starting with his name.

Blurb:

Ember only wants two things out of life: to be reunited with her sisters, and to see people come back to her café. Catering to people she never sees again, she experiences a loneliness that can’t be filled. As one of the last Whakamanu—a descendant of the Maori bird-god Tane—she has to hold on to the secrets of her tribe. Family first.

Gourmet TV personality Austin Garten, host of the popular show Back Road Eats, needs more in his life than Breadbasket America grilling. He’s tired of the safe routes, the easy and dependable foods that the Network loves to display. When his RV breaks down in Wyoming, and he learns about Kai, a Maori restaurant outside of Casper, his interest is piqued. Once he meets the proprietor, he realizes he’s wants more than just her food. He wants her.

Ember isn’t too sure. The Solstice, the Maori New Year, is fast approaching, and with the heat in her kitchen ratcheting up, she knows she can’t keep her secret for much longer. But will Austin be able to accept her? Or will her secret drive them apart?

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR - Guest Post & #giveaway by Cate Peace

Tandy's defense of setting up Moira with 1Night Stand; or, What are Best Friends For (if not for going behind your back and setting you up with a date)?

Best friends have to wear a lot of hats—the party hat for those awesome times, the commiseration hat when things don’t go as planned (it looks like one of those birdcage veil things), the spiked helmet (that matches the armor) for when people mess with our loved ones. Sometimes, though, we have to put on the devil horns.

That happens to be my favorite hat.

I may have been employing some devil horns when I signed my best friend Moira up with 1Night Stand. I’d heard about it from a mutual friend, who’d used the service and found the perfect person for her. Did I think Madame Eve would set Moira up with the person she belonged with? Yes. Did I think that person would be a vampire? Never crossed my mind.
However, I did my research before I filled in any blank fields. I asked Alene a hundred questions. I read testimonials from the site. I did everything I could think of because that’s what best friends do. Besides, with as much as she’s been through, Moira deserved something sure. I got tired of watching her fade into the background and being the only one who knew how fantastic she is. Even though I had to go behind her back to do it, it needed to be done.
I knew she’d forgive me eventually. I mean, Kiernan’s pretty hot. For a vampire.
Besides, happy endings are hard to come by in this world. And who deserves one more than your best friend?

Thanks, Cate and Tandy! And isn't that a gorgeous cover?

Blurb

Vampire Kiernan Shaw has never forgotten the night twenty years ago when he’d been forced to stand by while another vampire killed a six-year-old girl’s parents in front of her. He’s spent the better part of the last two decades watching over her, protecting her and hoping for an opportunity to make amends one day.

Ever since surviving the vampire attack that killed her parents, Moira Curran has dealt with the resulting nightmares and abandonment issues the only way she could—by throwing herself into her biochemistry career, preferring a life of a hermit in her lab to facing the reality of her lonely life.

Madame Eve brings them back together for one fateful night. An immediate bond of sizzling chemistry and respect forms, but can it heal her fears and his guilt?
