Excerpt:
“I
take it you’ve never seen a Hyborean before.”
“Not even in a drawing.” Her breath came out as a whisper. Their auras were too dim to read. Although she’d no experience perceiving the Hyborean essence, she could tell they weren’t acting like their true selves.
The scientists unhooked their chain leashes and set up a stepladder next to one. Since no
anxiety
registered from any of the men, Myia tried quieting her apprehension. She
stepped closer to Kedric, though. Just in case. “How can they be in Pele? The
Spirit Lights protect us from them.”
He
turned to face her. “I don’t want to upset you, but it’s time you understood
what the lights in the sky really are.”
Ah,
so that’s why his eyes filled with pity. The leader of the “advanced” society
must educate the ignorant savage girl on her foolish beliefs. Well, it wasn’t
the first time someone had tried to explain the physical manifestation of the
Spirits. “Enlighten me, oh, wise one.”
His
eyes narrowed at her flippancy. He didn’t admonish her for breaking her no
sarcasm promise. A fact that amplified her regret over voicing said wiseass
comment. Why couldn’t she keep her big mouth shut around him?
Perhaps
he’d accept a big, bright smile as a peace offering.
He
only shook his head in resignation. “We call the lights aurora tropicos. It’s a
phenomenon that occurs due to the strong electromagnetic fields on this part of
the planet. The colored lights are created from electrons and gases. Dunna
could explain the science to you.”
Explaining
the science didn’t change the fact that the lights were indeed spiritual
energy. She held her tongue. It would do no good to argue. An open mind was the
only path to figuring out how to fulfill her goal.
“But
the important thing to know is that while the electromagnetic or EM fields are
harmless to humans and animals, they aren’t to Hyboreans. The fields disrupt
their normal telepathic brainwaves causing confusion, pain, and even death.”
“You
mean those poor creatures are in pain?”
“No,
unfortunately.” She didn’t like his callous tone. “The EM field on this smaller
island isn’t strong enough to hurt them. It does, however, interfere with their
brainwaves. It alters their cognition.”
“How
so?” A bad, queasy feeling roiled her stomach.
“It
shuts off their conscious thought.”
This
couldn’t be going where she feared it was going. Her pulse quickened.
“In
our efforts to control the Hyboreans, the science team created a tech-ring with
the
ability
to stimulate certain parts of the brain to elicit certain behaviors. For
example, aggression.” Her fingers tingled. This wasn’t good.
“However,
they were unsuccessful in making the beasts do any specific skill. To follow
directions. They didn’t know how to communicate with the Hyboreans. Until
yesterday.”
An
undertow dragged on her soul. She glanced at the scientist securing a tech-ring
on top of the second Hyborean’s head. “You’ve created a mind control device?”
“Aye.
But they didn’t work until—”
“I
told you how to communicate spirit-to-spirit.” If she were in quicksand, she
couldn’t sink any lower.
