Read Only Wednesday - Hidden In Ashes (A'yen's Legacy 5) by Rachel Leigh Smith #futuristic #romance

Read Only Wednesday is when I mention a book I've just read, about to read, or adding to my TBR pile. This week it's Hidden in Ashes, book five in the A'yen's Legacy series. I've already read and reviewed the previous four but I'm still behind in keeping up to date with this series. Oops.

Blurb:
Childhood enmity turns to love, with one problem: his heart isn't his to give.

Lorin is a daro, a Lokmane trained to make humans feel special and valued. As Prime of Arkos House, no one stands between him and the safety of the daros under his care—except his mistress. The dead one, and the new one. He needs to focus on the Essence crisis infiltrating the Houses, and his sister's safety. Not figure out how to balance his duties with falling in love.

When her mother dies, emotionally wounded Sagira Memeos becomes the Marcasian Empire’s newest High Lady. And reluctant owner of the most sought after daro in said empire. He’s her childhood nemesis, and way too sexy for his own good. With his kindness finding its way into her bruised soul, asking for his help to navigate her succession to ruling high lady probably isn't her brightest idea.

Lorin wants Sagira. But not if he has to pay for it with innocent lives. She’s a distraction he can't afford while the bedrock of Marcasian high society is under attack. Not to mention facing losing his sister to the man who wounded Sagira. If the daro houses fall, all hope of freedom goes with them.

Tuesday Teaser - Hidden In Ashes (A'yen's Legacy 5) by Rachel Leigh Smith #futuristic #romance

Lorin set his empty flute on a passing server’s tray, once more scanning the room for Sunny’s distinctive red hair. This time he found her, across the room talking to Addie. Every sound, every scent, every other person in the room, faded from his mind. Her curls were piled atop her head. Instead of the formal tiara, she wore a three strand headband of emeralds in every shade possible.
Her dress was teal, with a subtle sparkle. Sprinkled across the bodice and shoulders were teardrop crystals in pink, purple, yellow, green, teal, blue, and orange. Totally Sunny. And totally elegant.
She turned her back to him. The same crystals studded the back of the dress, which dipped to reveal shoulder blades he wanted to trace. With his fingers and his tongue. Careful to stay behind her, he wove through the crowd. Addie spotted him and he held a finger to his lips.
For the first time in his career, he wanted to greet her as a daro greeted an owner. But would she let him? Only one way to find out, so he went for it.
He eased in behind her. In one smooth motion he settled his hands on her hips, bent his head to the left, and kissed the side of her neck. Her body became a statue. “It’s me, Sunny,” he whispered in her ear. This close, her spicy-sweet fruit perfume filled his nose. He wanted to kiss the tender spot behind her ear where the scent lived, but she might stab one of her four-inch heels into his foot. So he refrained, even though the effort made him want to whimper.
She did crazy things to his body. Made him want to carry her to bed and not let her leave until he’d erased every bad memory of touch put in her by her cretin of a father. Until she erased every bad memory of touch put in him by her mother.
“What are you doing?” She spoke in a whisper, too.
“This is how a male daro greets his mistress. I’ve never done it before.”
“Everyone knows what it means?”
“Yes.” He released her. “Are you okay with it?”
She turned. Without putting distance between them. “It’s too late for it to matter. Give me some warning next time.”
Next time. He let a smile curve his lips. “All right.”
The orchestra moved into a slow waltz. Puccini’s Quando M’en Vo, from La Bohème. One of his favorites. “Dance with me?”
“I don’t know how.”
He held his left hand out, palm up. “Follow my lead, and no one will know.”
She stared at his hand, then slid her right hand into his. He led her to the edge of the dance floor, took her in a waltz hold, and let the music carry them away. “Look at me, not your feet.”
Blue eyes, with pupils dilated, fixed on his face. Tense muscles kept her in statue form.
“Relax, Sunny. Breathe.”
She did. He kept it simple, moving in a circle around the edge of the room. When the music stopped, she did too. “Are you hot? I’m melting.” She left his arms. Letting her go took every ounce of willpower he possessed.

Read Only Wednesday - Freedom's Embrace (A'yen's Legacy 4) by Rachel Leigh Smith #futuristic #romance

Read Only Wednesday features a book I've just read, am about to read, or is on my ever increasing TBR pile/wishlist. This week it's Freedom's Embrace, book four of Rachel Leigh Smith's futuristic romance series (and currently the last). I've already read the previous three, though I've yet to review the second and third books, but the series overall has a 5* rating from me.

Blurb:
If Taran loses his girl--and his second chance at love--he'll never find his way to freedom.

A'yen's Reign: Year Two
Taran has served Nicco, prince of Marcase, for twenty-three years. While on a fact-finding mission to Corsica--a planet annexed by the empire thirteen years ago--Taran and Nicco are kidnapped by the Freedom Alliance and taken deep into the Corsican hardwood forests.

Da'Renna, sister to King A'yen's linked bodyguard, has loved Taran since the moment he saw her. Leaving him behind wasn't easy, but her brother needed her more. Hearing about Taran's kidnapping makes her wonder if she made the right choice.

With the help of a friend from Corsica, Da'Renna and her brother sneak in to find Taran. When mercenaries take her hostage, Taran must make the choice he dreads most: his master, or his soul-mate.

Freedom isn't supposed to be this hard.

Note: This novel stands alone and is a great entry point into the A'yen's Legacy futuristic romance series

Tuesday #Teaser - The King's Mistress by Rachel Leigh Smith #scifi #romance

Thanks so much for letting me share, Pippa. I’ve picked a teaser from about the midpoint of The King’s Mistress that shows what A’yen is struggling with throughout the novel.

***
The familiarity of his map and Guild programs did little to calm A’yen. For the first time in his life, he’d failed at something. Something with far-reaching consequences, of course. At least down here in the basement, everyone left him alone. Ro was with Na’var at the Dreen home, working on his TK. Bren and Fae were unpacking.
Thudding on the stairs behind him made him turn. Dad came in, closed the door, and sat on the couch. “Na’var filled me in on the basics yesterday.”
“I blew it, Dad. Totally blew it. They hate me.”
Dad patted the empty space beside him. “I expected them to hate you. You challenge every preconceived notion they have about what we’re like on the outside.”
“Did Na’var tell you what Salem did?” A’yen dropped into the empty spot, sideways, left arm on the back of the couch. He was shirtless and wearing shorts, his preferred mode when at home. The after-effects of the mind-hopper screwing with him lingered with increased tightness in the ink and less pressure needed to start the burning.
“Yes. I had hoped he wouldn’t stoop quite that low. You did the right thing asking Varune for help.”
“I shouldn’t have had to. I should have seen it coming, should have stopped it.” He made a fist and punched the couch.
Dad covered his balled hand and pressed down to make him relax. “You did everything you could.”
“But I let you down. I have nothing to show for it. Half the regents believe the Association paid Fae to pretend she’s found Lok’ma and that we manufactured everything we showed them. There are no new alliances, no new commitments, no changes in anything.”
Dad shook his head and sighed. “I didn’t send you out there to do any of that. I sent you out there to make Salem show his hand. I wanted the names of every single regent opposed to reunification. Thanks to you, I have them. What about the cabinet?”
“They don’t like me either. I didn’t know it was possible to hear that much bullshit.”
Dad chuckled for a moment then sobered. “They’ve lost all concept of the outside world. I’ve had Na’var keeping track of possible candidates out here for cabinet positions. There are also structures on the farms we can pull people from.”
“How do you do all this without going crazy?”
“I never said it hasn’t driven me crazy.”
A’yen leaned against the soft cushions. “Fae asked me once if I believed expectations could kill a person. I said yes, but I didn’t know what I was talking about. Most of the people I met don’t accept me as I am. They made no attempt to understand me.” Unable to look at Dad another second, he stared at the floor. “I’m not a pawn. I just want to be me. I don’t know how to be me and help you pull us together.”

Freedom has a cost. Can A’yen pay it without losing his soul?

Liberation of the enslaved Lokmane begins with the king. A’yen and Fae agree to visit the Hidden, a group of escaped Lokmane, to protect his identity while the Shadows make their move with emancipation acts. But he's not prepared for the prejudice rampant in the Hidden, or their lack of patience for him. And his new linked bodyguard is unstable to the point A'yen fears for the young man's sanity.

Upon returning to Titan, A'yen is kidnapped and taken to the largest breeding farm in the galaxy. This time he'll be himself even if it kills him. His resolve to unite his people grows as he wonders if he'll live long enough to do it.

With A'yen kidnapped, Fae returns to the Lokmane homeworld seeking the final pieces of what happened two thousand years ago when they were conquered and enslaved. Getting as far away from her father as possible is the only way to keep her from disappearing too.

Separated by light years, A'yen and Fae have to stand alone and fight for their right to live in freedom. No matter the cost.
