Now, Leorah and Maxxus have to bring the kingdoms together to try and strengthen everyone against the mysterious foe up against them.

The very thing that set her apart from her kingdom could be the very thing to save them all, if only they quell their fear and let her.

About the Author:
Sariah Skye physically resides in southern Minnesota with her husband, two kids and a dog, but mentally her head is in the clouds dreaming of anything that doesn't require "adulting".
When not writing she's probably geeking out watching Star Trek or Doctor Who, playing World of Warcraft, reading and/or staying up way too late. She'd love it if you dropped her a line at Facebook or Twitter but be prepared...she's a nictofiliac so be patient for a response while her eyes adjust to the light of day and beware of sarcasm. Genre: Fantasy
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: May 16, 2017

Never trust a mermaid's kiss.

Tyler McColdrum has a bright future on the professional surfing circuit until his father tragically dies at sea. Unable to pay the bills, Tyler and his mother leave California and move to his late grandfather's cottage in Land's End, Maine—a world away from the life he's known. Not even the stormy Atlantic can douse Tyler's surf stoke, but when mariners go missing off the coast, legends as old as the sea itself suggest something lurks beneath the surface. As the police investigate, his friend Kiwa—the only female surfer for miles—indicates there's more to the McColdrum family history than blood and bone.

Amara is a beautiful mermaid, a mero, who wants a life on land away from her sinister sisters. As charming as mero are, with musical voices and a tempting gaze, they're also brutal and cruel, stealing the souls of sailors. As Initiation nears, Amara learns Poseidon selected her as consort and her desperation for freedom increases. When Tyler encounters Amara, he falls hard for her. The ocean is no longer safe for him, but he trusts their love can overcome her mero nature. As locals and officials wage war against the sea, trying to keep mariners safe, Tyler and Amara struggle with how to protect each other.

With one foot in the sand and the other in the sea, Tyler must choose love or the surf as the tide quickly rises.

Before I Shatter full wrap

Excerpt:
“Vita!” James is panicked, shaking my shoulders, when my eyes begin to crack open. The bright light violates my pupils, and I slam my eyes shut again. My head is pounding.
“Stop shaking her, boy. We don’t know what damage that could cause.” I relax a bit as my body takes in the grandfatherly voice of wisdom. James’s hands release me. “She’s coming around. Give her a moment.”
I moan, raising an arm to cover my closed eyes. “I’m fine.”
“She could pave a road with those words.” The Old One’s voice gets farther away.
Before I can even wonder what that means, the light mercifully wanes, and I dare to peek out from under my arm. I begin to piece together where I am. The tiny white room. Lying on my monitoring station.
A visibly shaken James is sitting next to me, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes, face ashen.
“Hey,” I coax. “It’s okay. Nothing to be worried about.”
James shakes his head and looks down. A sniffle seems to actually compose him, and he looks up at me. “Vita, I’m so sorry. If I would have known, I would have warned you.”
Still hazy, I recall my experience in the meadow with the solider boy. Before speaking, I resolve to never let myself be that helpless again. Starting right now. Just like James said, I will be the one doing the breaking. Well, maybe not right now. After I recover from whatever this is.
“Warned me about what?”
“The dazers,” he practically whispers, but I still hear the George’s tongue cluck from the computer station. His disapproval is thick. “You passed out on the steps. I couldn’t wake you up. When I brought you here, I thought you were dead.”
“Yes, the drugs caused your heart to race,” the wizard explains, less emotionally. His eyes never leave the tablet in his hands. “Your heart didn’t care for that so it shut down...for a bit.”
“It shut down?” I echo as panic begins to rise from my toes.
“Only for a moment.” His hand waves dismissively. “Everything’s fine.” The Old One smirks, finally looking up at me as he turns my own words around on me.
“I died?”
“For a second.” George holds up two fingers very close together in an attempt to keep us positive.
Whoosh. “I came as soon as I heard.” Long brown hair whirls through the room. Mom busies herself snatching the tablet and replacing James at the side of my bed. She grasps my hand, leans in, and begins examining my eyes. I have no idea what they look like, but her fear and disgust focus across the room. “George, thank the stars you are still here! How could this have happened? I’m not even sure what this means.” She shakes the tablet at him, the data revealing itself to me shortly. “Where was she? Who was with her?”
James makes a move to step forward and the Old One stops him. “She was just doing as I instructed. Taking time off. Meeting new people. Trying out a party. I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would be confronted with...substances.”
Mom visibly calms down. I guess maybe she couldn’t be too angry with the man who had just saved her daughter’s life? She lays the tablet down gently. “What can I do for her?”
“Nothing, I’m afraid. The drugs have to work their way through her system. She won’t be able to start training until they are flushed out. Her new friends just may have bought her enough time to completely restore before the next round.”
My eyelids feel as though they are made of lead. My hand is nestled between stronger ones. I fight to stay awake behind the fading light.
“What will we ever do without you?” My mother’s whisper floats across the room to me.
His firm response slices through the darkness closing in around me. “The director has plans but so do we. Stick to the plan. Thanks to your husband’s—ex-husband’s—news story, she’s about ready to enter a world where everyone knows her and what she can do. She needs you two more than ever.”
I didn’t know then that when I awoke, it would be to a new world. A world without George, without visits from my dad, and without panic attacks. A world where I was a celebrity, a scientific wonder, and no longer alone. Never mind that I put my life at risk each time I pushed one the boundaries of human capability. I lived by the words I was never meant to hear:
“Vita’s never going to be broken. She’s going to be the one doing the breaking. She’s stronger than any of us will ever know.”

Excerpt Fool’s Gambit
©2016 Athena Grayson
Denaat Hades held his blade extended, his arm outstretched. He held the lunge on one burning thigh muscle while he stood in near-complete darkness, waiting for the spectacle to begin. The landscape of the party had given way to the evening’s main event—an exhibition duel and bladework demonstration between himself and the Academy’s Blademaster with a twenty-five year record.
Gone were the ornamental topiary plantings that created nooks and alcoves for socializing, and gone was the impressive display of fine foods and the waterfall made from champ-ale bubbling and fizzing over cut-crystal held under pressurized glass until it burst out of the pursed lips of a crystal nymph into glasses for guests. They’d been discreetly cleared away for anti-gravity pods holding comfortable seating for up to a dozen guests. The pods jockeyed for position along x, y, and z axes based on the credit amounts donated by their occupants, except for the single, stationary pod holding his instructors and closest classmates, fixed to the floor at the edge of the ring of drones generating the light field for the dueling area.
Gone also was his shiny, holo-patterned suit and the starsilk shirt beneath it, and the ornamental lights in his hair. His finery—picked out by his class’s style consultant to display his status and wealth—was stuffed into a storage container in favor of light, form-fitting carbon-fiber armor, with a matching face mask. Gauntlets secured to his wrists generated power for the sensors emitting an electro-mesh shield around his body that shifted with the movements of his off hand. His weapon, an elegant blade of wire and light, derived its power from his main hand gauntlet and the glove that protected his hand. Tuned to full, the blade could melt steel or puncture the transparent alloy that made up the dome above his head.
Thankfully, this was an exhibition duel. The blades would sting, but not incapacitate or kill.
He waited, holding his ready position, as the banners came down, displaying his family’s banner, with the twinkling ribbons of support from classmates and other interested parties, and the Academy banner, under which Master Kenndar dueled. Tradition kept the Academy banner free of ribbons, but his neural interface told him the odds of his loss were just under fifty percent. The markets were calling this a close thing and the players in the markets were nothing, if not savvy odds-players.
The lights came up around the ring, plunging the shifting observation cars into darkness as Master Kenndar entered from the other side of the oval. He took his cue to step forward, meeting his opponent in the center of the ring. He executed the formal bow, hand-grip, and blade salute deserving of a worthy opponent and prayed his master’s teachings weren’t wasted. He returned to his ready position to await the chime beginning the match, but not before he glanced towards the stationary box and spotted her in the front row, the lights in her hair twinkling in time with the flashes of crystal on her dress.
Ione wore a small smile of bored amusement, echoing the expressions of probably everyone in the audience, and he knew their thoughts. Yet another Academy student, ready to show off for status and praise, as if the privileges of his born position didn’t already come with their own accolades. His gaze flicked to the VIP box and he saw another bored, slightly amused expression, only he knew this one masked keen interest. As if the man sensed his scrutiny, Invicti Hades lifted one eyebrow and Den heard the words as surely as if they’d been broadcast for all to hear. What new way have you found to disappoint me?
The lurking paranoia he’d lived with for ten years summoned itself to the forefront of his awareness as the lights in the arena changed to a soft blue. The chimes sounded for Ready and Arm, and his blade flared to golden life. Across the ring, Master Kenndar assumed his own ready position. Den felt the eyes of the spectators crawling over him, adding weight to his protective gear. Waiting for him to fail.
The last chime sounded. Engage!
He leapt forward, his awareness extended out to the blade’s end, as he’d been taught and trained by Kenndar to do for ten years. And knew he’d made a mistake.

Series Blurb for Scions of the Star Empire:
They can have anything they want...except a future.

The children of Landfall's powerful nobility have all the wealth and privilege of their family status, but there's only one thing that will give them true freedom--the title of Scion. The only way to earn it is by carefully managing the social influence markets that rank them according to their accomplishments. At the exclusive Landfall Cultural Academy, the heirs compete to elevate their status high enough for the Cultural Trust to grant them the title and the freedom to make their own way, and scandal is as good as scholarship.

About the Author:
Athena Grayson likes kickass heroines, big-brained and sexy beta heroes who aren't afraid of strong women or their own feelings, and stories that turn the genre tropes sideways. If you're looking for something a little unexpected, a little more, and a lot of fun...this is your kinda place.

Age category: Adult

Blurb:
Goddess or Madwoman? Even she isn't sure.

A WOMAN
Tompa Lee serves as ambassador to the Shons' planet and is hailed as their goddess . . . but she distrusts fellow humans, has a dead man living in her head, and fears an imminent attack by Klicks, mankind's greatest enemy.

A MAN
Ming Mengliev is posing as a mere musician when Klicks destroy the Terran embassy … but although he strives to win Tompa's trust—and her heart—whose side is this secret agent really on?

A PARK CRAMMED WITH CARNIVORES
Can Tompa survive Keevie's pursuit, divine madness, and the predators of Palla Pelly Park … and conquer her mistrust of humans long enough to shepherd a ragtag troop of Shons and humans to safety?

Excerpt:
“Who are you?” Tompa called to the Klick, remembering the old advice, know thine enemy. “What’s your name?”
The tyrannosaurus-like creature rose, bowed, and then sat back on his tail. “My name is Keevie klauk Enkirk’s Spawn, but you may call me Death.”
“The Klick leader?”
“Do you never soar above the obvious?”
“Nope.” To her own surprise, Tompa laughed. Chatting in the dark of night to a bloodthirsty lizard who wanted to kill her felt bizarre. Surreal. Everything that had happened to her on Zee Shode was either terrifying or absurd.
No, not true. Some of Zee Shode was glorious. Finding a friend like Awmit who accepted her. Finding a place where she actually belonged.
And sleeping with Ming? Hadn’t that been glorious, too?
Well, perhaps.
“What can you expect from an uneducated street meat?” she taunted. “I’m the smallest, skinniest, dumbest, lowest class human you're ever going to find. And yet, a few months ago I beat the tail spikes off you bullies. Drove you right off this planet.”
That’s telling him, girl. Dante spoke inside her head with more passion than usual, making Tompa feel cozy and less alone.
“How I shall enjoy eviscerating you, Tompa Lee.” Keevie paced back and forth, his tail thrashing from side to side, tearing up the grass-like ground cover.

Note from the author:
The books in The Trilogy of Tompa Lee are standalone novels that share an overall story arc. The books are:
The Trial of Tompa Lee
• The Tribulations of Tompa Lee
• The Triumph of Tompa Lee

Before I start writing, I have to think of something I haven’t seen before. Without a unique kernel, I can’t get anywhere.

In The Tribulations of Tompa Lee, there were two kernels: national parks and a James Bond-type secret agent who plays the oboe. (I play the oboe, too, but that’s strictly a coincidence, I assure you.)

I’d never read a book set in a national park on another world. What would aliens preserve in their version of Yellowstone? Hmm.

Shons care less about the beauties of nature than they do with preserving as many lethal predators as possible – and thus a huge park crammed with carnivores is the setting for Tribulations. Tompa must overcome not only aliens who want to kill her, but the fiercest beasts the planet has to offer.

Other books in the series:
The books in The Trilogy of Tompa Lee are standalone novels that share an overall story arc. Book one is The Trial of Tompa Lee, which is currently free:

Book three in the trilogy is The Triumph of Tompa Lee:

The war has begun. The battle’s unfolding. And victory feels so distant…
The Essenced had prepared and trained, but never imagined the true horror of watching demons tearing through the Division to invade the realm. They thought they were ready for that challenge…
But then their confidence is shaken when a deadly new weapon emerges from the enemy’s arsenal, and well-kept secrets from the Essenced’s angelic superiors begin to surface.
In the midst of the carnage, can the teens find the strength within themselves, and among themselves, to grasp victory in blood-tainted hands?"

Connie L. Smith spends a decent amount of time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and might forever be sad that she doesn’t have fairy wings. Cover Reveal: Humanity's Hope (Saving Humanity #1) by @PembrokeSinclai #YA #zombie

Today is the cover reveal for Humanity's Hope by Pembroke Sinclair. This cover reveal is organized by Lola's Blog Tours.

Humanity's HopeHumanity's Hope (Saving Humanity #1)
by Pembroke Sinclair
Genre: Zombie
Age category: Young Adult

Blurb:
Caleb, a 17-year-old boy, survived the zombie uprising, but he didn’t come out of the ordeal unscathed. He’s been scarred—both mentally and physically. The rest of humanity is trying to rebuild, to make the world normal again. Caleb is trying to return to a normal life also, but after all he’s seen, after the loss of his family and friends, the transition is difficult. The darkness that led him down a path of self-doubt and self-harm keeps trying to creep back into his mind.

Things only become worse when he discovers he’s immune to whatever makes a zombie a zombie. Fighting zombies was predictable. He knew what to expect. Fighting humans is volatile. They are malicious and treacherous. They won’t stop to get what they want, and Caleb has to figure out exactly what that is.

*Trigger warning: attempted suicide

You can find Humanity's Hope on Goodreads

Excerpt:
Caleb’s extremities tingled with adrenaline, his footsteps thumped rhythmically on the hard, dry ground. He sucked in long gasps of air, but his lungs still burned for oxygen. He caught glimpses of the other two out of the corner of his eyes. The undead drew nearer. Their arms outstretched, waiting to snag their prey. Caleb zig-zagged across the field. He ducked under a pair of arms, then shouldered a zombie out of the way. Its bones crunched against his shoulder, teeth gnashed close to his ear, driving him forward with more urgency. The house grew larger with every step he took. Almost there.

A short yip followed by a grunt sounded behind him. He risked a glance over his shoulder. Len stumbled then fell. Caleb’s heart leapt into his throat. He skidded to a stop, turning to help his friend. Caleb was about to step toward Len, but he was stopped in his tracks. The action caused him to lose his balance. His arms flailed through the air to keep Caleb from falling over. An incessant, strong tugging kept him from moving forward. He turned to see Nina jerking on his backpack. Her eyes were wide and glistening with tears. She bit her bottom lip and shook her head violently. Caleb glanced again at Len, who reached for Caleb, his mouth open in a silent plea, tears running down his cheeks. Caleb reached toward him. Len’s plea turned into a scream as a zombie bit into his calf. A dark ring of blood stained his jeans and grew larger. Another zombie latched onto the fingers of his extended hand. The crunch as it bit through his bones rattled in Caleb’s skull. He pulled his hand into his chest.

Caleb turned at that point. There was nothing more he could do. His sister grabbed his wrist, and they ran into the house. They took the stairs two at a time and headed into a bedroom on the right. After closing the door, they scanned the area, checking under the bed and in the closet. Clear. His sister collapsed face first onto the bed. From the way her body shook, Caleb could tell she was crying. He leaned back until his pack connected with the door. His legs gave out, and he slid to the floor. Pulling his knees to his chest, he wrapped his arms around his head and tried to disappear into himself.

And then there were two.

The ReturnThe Return (The After Trilogy #2)
by Kelly St. Clare
Genre: science fiction/ dystopian
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: June 2017

Blurb:
The dystopian science fiction story continues in this action-packed novel for young adults by internationally best-selling author Kelly St. Clare.

Three months ago, Romy emerged from the cultivation tanks after a year floating inside.

Body intact. Mind broken. Memory gone.

Now she undergoes regular testing as doctors work to find out . . . well, she’s not exactly sure what.

The tests must have something to do with the reason she can’t remember her knot—the single lucid memory the other insane soldiers on Orbito Four still possess. Whatever the researchers are searching for, if it aids the soldiers in the deathly war against the lethal alien invaders—the Critamal—the excruciating pain is worth it.

But a grey-eyed man has other plans.

Boxed in and caught, Romy is taken hostage by people who shouldn’t exist! They dress in black and carry weapons she’s never seen in her genetically enhanced life.

Reunited with Knot 27. Memories returned.

Fifteen months have passed since her world shattered into bright red, ringing chaos. Things have changed—people have changed. How long until what was once as familiar as breathing is familiar once more?

Friendships. Love. Freedom.

Can the new Romy reconcile with the old, or will the two halves of herself remain locked in an internal battle?

And if a victor should arise from this silent war . . . will it be the part of her that kills without hesitation, without mercy?

All it takes is for the cracks to join and blood will pour.

Excerpt:
Romy strained for any hint of disturbance, but an eerie calm filled the space.
The electrodes and wires covering her arms and legs suddenly felt like restraints—a barrier preventing her from leaping from the bed and protecting herself. She closed her eyes and attempted to regulate her breathing.
Everything was fine.
There was nothing to—
The space station rocked as a muted explosion emanated from the clinic door. Her stomach dropped, and she nearly sat up before remembering Electrode Slapper’s withering order to stay still.
Romy held herself immobile, eyes darting side to side, senses stretched to maximum capacity.
Was that smoke creeping along the ceiling? Not the normal smoke from her burning hair—real smoke!
Nothing good could come from a fire onboard a space station.
Unable to deny fear’s curiosity, she turned to stare at the remaining male doctor, awaiting his order to evacuate. His attention was fixed on the door, the whites of his eyes showing his terror—of something. Romy watched as he scrambled from his seat, hands raised, stammering and babbling senselessly.
Not terror of something. Someone.
Romy inhaled sharply as a dart appeared out of nowhere, sticking deep into the side of his neck. The doctor staggered and slowly keeled over next to the bed, sending a screen smashing to the ground.
She jerked violently as his body rebounded off the floor before settling into unconsciousness.
The medi-tech surrounding her beeped, high-pitched and urgent, snatching up her distress and sounding it out for all the world to hear.
So much for playing dead. She took stock. At least five electrodes and their wires hung off each limb. Another ten on her torso and five more on her head. Extracting herself in a hurry wasn’t looking like an option. Heavy footsteps approached the bed where she lay, frozen. Mind racing. Several sets of footsteps, she realised—maybe ten. Romy swallowed, palms sweating where they touched her bare thighs.
A large shadow fell across her body.
Dread settled heavy in her bones.
A man dressed in solid black leaned over the bed, blotting her view of the white ceiling. A soldier. Unlike any she’d seen. Why wasn’t he dressed in white?
The man’s face was clean-shaven and as his scent reached her, she got the oddest sense of another time. Of warmth and. . . .
She blinked into his soft grey eyes.
With careful movements, the man moved the gun he carried so it slung across his back. The weapon was small, sleek—the complete opposite of the huge laser guns fitted on the space station.
Who was this person?
He reached for her, expression impassive, a slight tremor in his hands.
And spoke a single, hoarse word.
“Romy.”

Cover Reveal - Within the Essence (The Division Book 1) #YA #urbanfantasy

Blurb:
As the demons near, the Essences rise…
AJ had never been particularly athletic or coordinated, so waking up to realize she suddenly has super-human strength is a massive, mind-shaking shock. Finding that she’s gained a stalker overnight is another mark in the unusual category, and when she discovers she’s always had the essence of a werewolf in her blood, her world all but shifts beneath her.
Demons, she’s told, are looming in the world’s future, and the only hope humanity has of surviving their arrival is if she and teenagers like her surrender their humanity to dive into their mythical essences. Fairies, dragons, dwarves, mermaids… The remnants of seventeen different fantasy species must come to life to save the lives of everyone.
Someway, an army of supernatural teenagers must prepare to meet the demons escaping from their dimensional banishment, or everything ends. Can these teens succeed and save the world?

Excerpt:
“You can't see them, and the individuals themselves are gone. But their essences aren’t.”
She tried to make sense of the last statement, but could only mutter, “Huh?” in response.
“Their essences. Their beings. When mingled with magic, they’re what make werewolves, dragons, and all other mythical creatures. The individuals from the war wouldn't last, but some of those essences had to, or the world wouldn't stand a chance.”
“Oh, this keeps getting weirder.”
“And it’ll get stranger still,” he added without missing a beat. “You asked if they retired. This is what happened to them. They gave up their essences and their magic—since magic was draining from the world—to preserve them for future use. It killed them, but they did it.”
“Well, where did the essences and magic go?”
“Exactly!” He smiled, seeming proud of her for asking that question. “The magic was bottled up and given to a collection of angels for safekeeping. Its release was dependent on one particular angel's judgment as to when the Division was too big to ignore.”
She could sense something very bad about to be revealed, but she'd come this far. There was no point in turning back now. “‘Was’ dependent?”
He looked right into her eyes as he confirmed her suspicion. “The magic was released, sweetheart.”
Her terror multiplied with that admission, both for what it meant for the world in total and for what it implied for her specifically. “The Division was too big? Demons will be here soon?”
“Afraid so.”
“But what about the essences? Don't they have to mingle with the magic and save the world?”
“The essences were hidden in bloodlines,” he said. “Humans were the newest beings during the war, ones who required no magic to live. They would survive. They had to carry on the essences. Each potential essence was hidden in a different bloodline with the humans never knowing what was in their genes. Once the magic connects with the essence, the characteristics of that species surface from within the person. And, sweetheart, it already has connected and brought those essences to life.”
She knew, but she had to ask, barely managing a whisper. “When?”
“It was released Sunday night, AJ. It’s why you had such an odd Monday.”

Double Cover Reveal: the 2176 Freedom Series by Susan Grant #scifi #romance via @flyerdreamer

Welcome to the 2176 Freedom series cover reveal!

The 2176 Freedom Series is a 2-part sci-fi action romance series/serial that includes The Legend of Banzai Maguire (Part 1) and The Scarlet Empress (Part 2) at approximately 75,000 words apiece. Originally, the “2176" series consisted of five books written by four different authors following a series bible in a world that I created. The publisher subsequently went out of business and the rights to books 1 and 5 reverted to me. Recently, I took on the huge task of modernizing and rewriting both to stand completely separate from the old series. It was a labor of love that I hope will provide hours of edge-of-the-seat reading pleasure. It also opens up exciting opportunities for more stories in the 2176 Freedom world: Rim Riders, Clones, Warlords, Raft City Pirates, Revolutionaries, and more!

About The Legend of Banzai Maguire:

The year: 2016. While flying a peacekeeping mission over North Korea, Air Force pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire is shot down. Instead of the North Korean troops she expected, she finds herself captured by a mad scientist and put in bio-stasis. When she wakes, everything has changed. It's 2176, the world is in crisis, and she is a hotly contested prize. Once, Banzai's job was to protect democracy; now a mysterious voice claims she must bring it back.

The year: 2176. U.C.E. Commander Ty Armstrong is a decorated SEAL, combat veteran, and part-time treasure hunter. Seeking one elusive prize has become a personal obsession for him: Banzai Maguire, who was never found after her mysterious disappearance 160 years earlier. His quest to find her remains takes him into enemy territory where he discovers that not only is she very much alive, he might have already fallen in love with her. But before he can bring her to safety, they are captured by the charming, yet ruthless, Emperor of Asia. Ty vows to escape with Banzai at his side. But his captor has other plans for him—and for Banzai Maguire.

Praise for The Legend of Banzai Maguire:

“If Grant’s faithful fighter jet descriptions don’t snag readers from the outset, her fierce, funny, tough-as-nails heroine will. With its cliffhanger conclusion, awe-inspiring characters and droll humor, this book is a strong launch for a very promising series.” — Publishers Weekly

The Legend of Banzai Maguire excerpt:

Prologue

If you have the chance to live life to the fullest, do it. Don’t hold back, don’t be afraid, take the absolutely biggest bite out of this existence that you can. The rewards are immeasurable, the eventual fulfillment soul-deep. I know. I guess you could say that I’m an expert on the subject. I’ve lived two lives, both of them to the hilt.
My name is Maguire, Bree Maguire. But you know me as Banzai, even now, after years of accumulated titles, honors, and a marriage have lengthened my legal name to the point where I can’t help sighing long and silently at official events attended by those who expect and actually enjoy that sort of pomp, pageantry those closest to me know I’d rather avoid—the same people who know I never would.
Ceremony is a small sacrifice to make, you see. Once, I gave up everything that is important to a person. But, I would have died for my country, if asked. Instead, I was reborn into something better, something stronger. The United States was, too.
My quest took me to places I never imagined—not only geographical, but of the heart. It was how I first met the man who would be everything to me.
Now that I’m one hundred years into this winding path called life, my children tell me that I should record my memoirs before I pass on and leave the chore to the official biographers, who’ll no doubt use the opportunity to make me into more of a legend than I already am—to my dismay, because the men and women I consider the true heroes went on with their lives after their deeds were done, some quite humbly and certainly without the idolization directed toward me and my husband. They are the ones who deserve our remembrance, those men and women. And now, here in this record of what happened, they will receive recognition.
You may wonder if our pasts were as colorful as they seem, if our adventures were truly as fantastic and wild as you learned in school. Why, yes, they were. They were all that, and more…

About The Scarlet Empress:

Shot down over North Korea, Air Force fighter pilot Cam “Scarlet" Tucker is imprisoned and put in bio-stasis. She is awakened 160 years later to learn that her wingmate and best friend also survived. Now the “legendary” Banzai Maguire, Bree is being held for treason in the country that was once the United States.

Cam has problems of her own—big problems. She’s in the masterful hands of Prince Kyber, the dictator whom her friend thwarted. He won’t get fooled again. With the mysterious Shadow Voice urging revolution, and her friend in chains, Cam wants the sexy emperor on her side—and maybe a whole lot more. But her role in the thrilling mission to save her country has to come first. Banzai wouldn’t surrender, and Cam won’t either. It’s time to give a royal butt kicking, and Cam knows just where to start.

Praise for The Scarlet Empress:

“I am well aware of the toil and blood it will cost you to come to me, Banzai Maguire, but come to me you must. Hear my words; heed my call. I am waiting for you.”
—The Voice of Freedom, heard on the Trans-Malaysian Interweb, October 2176

“Exhilarating! As Bree fights for her life, Cam finds herself confronting one of the most powerful men in the world. Grant’s writing remains vivid whether describing astounding futuristic advances, depicting a vicious gun volley or drawing a poignant love scene.” — Publishers Weekly

“Grant’s futuristic military romance demonstrates her trademark qualities of humor, passion, and devotion to duty, as well as a riveting David-and-Goliath conflict. Especially timely in view of current events, The Scarlet Empress offers a thrillingly pointed reminder of the cost of freedom and the continuing sacrifices required of those who value liberty.” — Booklist

“A pulse pounding, heart stopping, and spectacular conclusion to the 2176 Series; a fantastic plot with great twists, turns, hot romance and nonstop action.” — Paranormal Romance Reviews

The Scarlet Empress excerpt:

Chapter One

Rocks pelted a sleek black sedan making halting progress through the streets of New Washington, D.C. Hastily erected electronic barriers restrained an angry mob. Black-clad UCE police were too overwhelmed, trying to keep the protestors in one place to worry about the few who got free.
A small group ran onto the road and emptied their arsenal of rocks at the approaching sedan. A proximity alarm beeped inside the vehicle, and the driver braked.
“Go!” UCE Supreme Commander General Aaron Armstrong rapped his knuckles on the clear barrier separating him from his driver. Do not stop, he mouthed to the sergeant, who floored the accelerator. There was a thud, a jerk of the steering wheel. A body tumbled over the bumper, striking a corner of the windshield before rolling off into the street.
How am I to avoid hitting them when they throw themselves at the car? Once more, he pressed the phone to his ear. “Back with you, Mr. President—”
A flaming pipe glanced off the hood and whacked the shatterproof windshield.
“Yes, yes, I know,” Armstrong grumbled. “Next time I’ll take a heli-jet.”
The sedan accelerated. Armstrong could no longer see the individuals in the crowd or read the slogans on the signs they carried. The vintage American flags—it seemed every protester brandished such an artifact now—became a broad, neutral blur. Speed had canceled out the fury of the mob.
The general relaxed against the rear passenger seat. It was recently upholstered in UCE blue; he could smell the new leather. He lifted the phone back to his ear. Before he could speak, a communicator resting in his other hand vibrated—once, twice, three times. His fingers flexed convulsively around the unit. It repeated the code, as he had hoped. Finally. He had waited long enough for this moment. Too long, he often feared of late.
“Hello? Are you there, Aaron?” the president was shouting into the phone.
“Indeed I am.” A smile curved the general’s mouth. “And with news. Good news.”
There was silence on the other end of the phone line. It was the closest he had ever heard Julius Beauchamp come to breathless anticipation.
“We found her,” Armstrong told him.
“Banzai Maguire…”
“Yes. We’ve a positive location. The team is in place.”
“Grab her! Despite our every effort to stop those broadcasts, the damage done, Aaron…it is incalculable. Banzai’s ability to escape us has reached mythical proportions amongst our citizenry. They say she turns to air to slip out of any trap, that she catches bullets with her teeth. She can change the minds of men with a single look.”
“Surely you don’t believe that, Mr. President.”
Beauchamp growled. “I want her heart on a platter.”
“A bit medieval, that, but it can be done.”
“Banzai is the worst threat we’ve faced in two centuries. Her weapons? Passion. Inspiration,” the president spat. “That’s my job, Aaron—my job to inspire the people, not this outsider’s. She doesn’t know jack about our world. Her actions prove it. She doesn’t understand how only we, the UCE, stand between world peace and chaos. I want her silenced. I want her gone.”
Armstrong smiled. “All but done, Mr. President. All but done.”
“And the second pilot? Lieutenant Tucker? Could she have been raised, too, like the legends suggest? Any sign that she survived?”
“None yet. She was not in the cave where Banzai first surfaced, though they were said to be buried there together.”
“A paradox. How do you explain it?”
“Interference by an outside party is my hunch. Someone wants her as badly as we do. If Cameron Tucker’s alive, Mr. President, I’ll find her. Meanwhile, we soon will have Banzai.”
Ahead, several hundred protesters broke through a barrier and surged into the street, setting off the black sedan’s proximity alarm once more. A soft computerized voice repeated the warning, “Stop. Obstruction in roadway. Stop.”
The general exchanged a sharp glance with his driver. The car didn’t slow.
“Don’t let Banzai get away, Aaron,” the president warned.
“Have no worries.” The general flicked a speck of dust off the steel toe of his boot. “The team is moving in. There’s nowhere for her to go.”
They say she turns to air to slip out of any trap, that she catches bullets with her teeth. She can change the minds of men with a single look…
The president might very well fret the growing legend, but Armstrong had an advantage no one else did—he knew Banzai’s Achilles’ heel, her one weakness.
The chink in her armor was his son.
By the time the first of the rocks began hitting the windshield, the general had ended the encrypted call. Crossing one leg over the other, he settled in for a turbulent ride to the White House. Nothing could affect his mood now. At long last, Banzai Maguire was his.

Excerpt:
"You scared me, lady. Some sentry I am, eh?"
Sentry: someone who guards. "Did you sit out here all night?"
Darby yawned again. "Most of today, too. You slept for thirty hours, Josette." He pulled away from me as though he didn't like my closeness.
He was evil, the enemy of my Destiny, so I leaned to within a handbreadth of his nose to annoy him. "You destroyed my clothes?"
"Out of my face, woman." He gently pushed me back. I lacked the strength to resist. "One of the nurses put your clothes in the hall closet so she wouldn't wake you." He pointed.
I stood carefully, determined to show no pain. If I moved slowly enough, my dizziness merely growled instead of baring fangs and lunging at my throat.
Darby looked at me in wonder. Creases wrinkled the corners of his mouth as he smiled. The creases were…dimples? Yes, dimples. How could an enemy have a face so appealing that my belly—though not my brain—felt warm and trusting? I turned, slowly of course, toward where he'd pointed.
"Uh, Josette. Your hospital gown is open at the back."
That observation didn't seem to require a response. I staggered five baby steps. Upon reaching the closet, I leaned against the wall as my head zoomed in wild circles, turning up into down and down into sideways.
"Jesus," he muttered.
The deity's name by itself imparted no information, and in any case it wasn't as important as getting dressed so I'd be like everyone else. The closet door had a round, fist-sized thingy at waist height. My mind didn't supply a name. When I grasped it, it wiggled, and when I turned it, the door opened. Doorknob, my mind belatedly explained.
My clothes hung inside, but my guns were gone. My packsack sat on the floor—minus, I already knew, my ten-thousand dollars.
Darby's footsteps hurried toward me. "Wait, Josette," he said in a rush. "I'll help you to your room and bring the clothes to you."
But I was already untying the bow at the back of my neck. As he reached me, my hospital gown fluttered to the carpet.
