How Many Years Published? #scifi #paranormal #romance

While I generally mark my publishing anniversary as the 7th May 2012 - being the release date of my debit novel Keir with Lyrical Press - it's not strictly true. Another title should really take that title, a whole year earlier.

Self published on the 11th May 2011 on Smashwords, with a bought cover image imposed with my own text, my short story The Bones of the Sea was technically my first publication. But it didn't feel official. My first short I'd written in decades, and my first attempt at self publishing, Bones was an experiment, a trial run. So while it's my first publication, I didn't feel it was truly my debut author launch. It was simply something I put into an ebook because I felt it was too long to stick in a blog post.

While it may have eventually gone through professional edits and gained a new cover, both courtesy of my Tadashi Dani Fine and even made it into print via the bonus material in my sci-fi novel Gethyon, this often unregarded firstborn has always been somewhat neglected. And yet I am proud of this little short. It was, after all, my first. It was also the result of much frustration in myself at my inability to keep things brief. And it also gave me my first blog post at Spacefreighters Lounge shortly before being invited to be a full-time crew member. So why is it treated like the poor relation of my now not insignificant collection of titles?

I guess I just have favourites. And let's face it, a full length novel taken up by a publisher is going to outshine a little self pubbed short in terms of significance. Keir was the maiden voyage into publication with a press rather than the dipping a tentative toe into self publication (at the time anyway). Keir was the book that made me think I had made it (insert self deprecating laughter here) and first met the editor who would change my publishing life (love her!).

So my authorly debut remains the 7th May, and 2021 marks it as nine years. Sorry Bones!

Walter Saltanetska translates AI code for the Khalendar government, helping to breathe life into the ambitious vision of the AI Masters. When Walter discovers a terrible secret which could destroy the life of his lover, Elaine, he decides to tell her despite strict orders to keep what he translates confidential.

What begins as a catastrophe eventually grows into a rebellion. Elaine is taken captive by the AI Masters, and Walter must do everything in his power to rescue her. He starts his quest with a single goal in mind, finding Elaine, but along the way Walter discovers that saving her is only a small part of his destiny. During his travels, he encounters a long-lost relative, a warrior matriarch, and a mystical kingdom forgotten to time. Yet Walter's true journey occurs not in physical space, but the captivating depths of his mind.

Excerpt:

Mariner’s Cove was a pristine beach surrounded by high limestone cliffs, and its unspoiled natural beauty contrasted starkly with the concrete towers of Crystal City. In the summertime, it was filled with people from all walks of life. Situated at the southern border between Crystal City and the Stockyards, the cove was one of the few places in Khalendar where elites and working-class folk mingled freely without any conflict. Between late fall and early spring, the beach was generally deserted, frequented only by cormorants, gulls, and the occasional albatross. It was the perfect place for meditation and reflection, if you didn’t mind the biting cold of the westerly winds and the crashing sound of the waves as they collided violently with the shore.
As soon as Walter’s interview was over he went to Mariner’s Cove, eager to soothe the fierce pounding in his head and to bring his rapid heart rate back down to normal levels. He sat down against a log near the water’s edge, and only after he had settled in did he realize that he was not alone; a girl was sitting on the other side of his log, reading quietly. Walter surveyed the silvery blue expanse of ocean stretched out beneath the horizon. In clear weather, it was possible to spot the northern tip of Scarlet Isle from Mariner’s Cove, but on that day the island was blanketed in an impenetrable shroud of mist.
Walter had made a game out of counting ships in the harbor, and it was one of his favorite beach pastimes. Identifying ships was more complicated in unruly weather, however, and on days when a dense shroud of mist and fog blanketed the harbor. The vessels were partially hidden beneath the shroud, their prows and masts modestly exposing themselves like timid maidens peeking through their wedding veils. Walter struggled to count the ships accurately, and his failure irritated him. He had always been proud of his own precision, but that quality also made him slightly obsessive and hard on himself.
The fog was growing heavier, and several ominous-looking clouds were rolling in toward the shore. Walter recalled their name from science class: cumulus. It sounded thick and heavy, like sludge. He gazed at them indifferently, confident that the clouds would not reach him and that he could relax at the beach for a few more hours, lazily curing his exhaustion. Yet he also knew how terrible thunderstorms at Mariner’s Cove could become; they had acquired a sort of legendary status throughout Khalendar. During a storm, waves would climb higher and higher as towering sheets of water assaulted the shore. When the waves broke, they would crash ferociously upon the rocky beach, erupting into dazzling geysers of foam and froth. The thunder would echo and bounce off of the limestone cliffs of the cove, saturating the beach with sound and fury. While it was a beautiful sight to behold, it was also quite dangerous. Many lives had been claimed through such thunderstorms, and Crystal City’s law enforcement agents had taken to reprimanding anyone who stayed at the cove during the storms.
After the immense challenge Walter had recently undergone, however, it seemed as though he could conquer anything; nothing appeared dangerous or daunting to him anymore. Adrenaline pumped through his veins still, even though its force was waning and was gradually being replaced by the desire to sleep. A vague thought nonetheless stirred within him: that the girl sitting behind him was facing the opposite direction of the oncoming storm, and was likely completely unaware of its approach.

Scythe (Dimension Drift Prequels #1)
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy

Summary:

A prequel novella to the new series from USA Today's 'must read YA paranormal romance' author, Christina Bauer.

Truth time. I go to a Learning Squirrel High School. Don’t judge.

On second thought, judge away. Learning Squirrel is one step above attending class in a junkyard. But what do you expect? Everything’s made out of garbage these days. At least, I have my freelance work to keep Mom and me housed, clothed, and fed. How? I’m your regular high school science geek for hire… only my work manipulates space-time. These gigs pay really well, but the government wants people like me dead. Good thing I’m super careful about hiding from their detection systems.

Then I screw up a job. Badly. My house slips into two-dimensional space-time. It only lasts for a few seconds, but the move still sets off about a dozen government alarms. If they track me down, Mom and I are good as dead. Long story short, I need to pay someone off, hide the evidence, and keep us safe.

Unfortunately, that means asking the Scythe for help. He runs the local underground crime scene and has absolutely no conscience. Or I'm pretty sure he doesn’t. It’s hard to think straight when a guy’s that hot in an evil Mafioso kingpin kind of way. More importantly, he's a crime lord who can conceal my slip-up with a few clicks on his minion’s computer keyboards. But the Scythe has his price. In this case, he wants me to finish a certain dimensional prototype for him in twenty-four hours. I can do it, but it might mean Learning Squirrel High gets blown up in the process. Oh yes, and there's also my new hot classmate who may or may not be an alien... and he says he'll do anything to help me.

This job won't be easy, but I’ve gotten out of worse scrapes. Maybe.

"Bauer’s unique voice blends magical fantasy, swooning romance, and a bucketful of teenage sass." - Booklist

This new series is perfect for: fans of urban fantasy, action & adventure, cool science, evil corporations, forbidden romance and hot new classmates who may or may not be aliens.

SCYTHE
BOOK EXCERPT

SCYTHE
Dimension Drift, Prequel 1
The Kiss

Thorne cups my face in his hands. “Then let me help you in another way. Can you trust in that?”
Our shared connection returns. Thorne’s emotions flow through my soul. I soak in the feelings.
The searing pain of worry.
Rock-solid conviction.
Raw honesty.
“Yes, Thorne.” My voice comes out rough and low. “I trust you.”
Thorne closes his eyes, and even in the dim moonlight, I can see his skin change color. Every inch of him is now colored in azure.
“You’re blue.”
“Yes.”
“You really, really are an alien.”
A small smile quirks his mouth again. “And you’re not frightened of me.”
“I should be.” In fact, I should scream and run right now, and for multiple reasons. Maybe it’s my dreams. Or the intensity of Throne’s emotions. Or something else I’m too afraid to name.
Whatever it is, I can’t help but stare at his mouth.
“Never be frightened of me, Rosa Meimifloria Archer, my glorious girl named after the drift rose.” Thorne leans in closer. His breath fans across my lips. “I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe. And for me, my people, a kiss can connect our consciousness in special ways.” He gently moves his mouth across mine.
Black, silver, and blue light now flare across Throne’s azure skin. The same colors shine from me as well. Deep in my soul, new links form. Energies entwine. Psychological cogs connect and spin. Warmth and affection spread.
I break the kiss, breathless. The light from our skin dies down. The azure hue disappears from Thorne.
“What was that?” I ask.
“The only way I can keep you safe.” Thorne’s mouth thins to a determined line. “Although it will mean a battle with my father.”
“Over me?”
Thorne nods.
Fresh panic streams through my veins. “Don’t do that. I’m not worth it.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Meimi. You’re remarkable.”
“Why? Because I build prototypes?”

“No, because you’ve a true heart, stellar mind, and fighting spirit. I’d tear apart any number of universes for you. You may find this hard to believe, but I already have.”

Excerpt:
The creature is pinned to the ground. The seven harpoons are plunged into its body, but I can still see it squirming.
                “Is it dead?” I whimper.
The boy approaches it, his blade pointed forward. I stay behind, I don’t want to get anywhere near that thing. The creature flails trying to free itself. The boy stands over top of it and slashes his sword right into the mid-section of the creature. It lets out one final cry and stops moving. The boy pulls out a harpoon, it’s made of the same material as his sword, and he plunges it into the creature's skull.
“What the hell was that?” I see the same black liquid I saw before leaking from its limp body. I realize its blood. Black blood is dripping from the creature and onto the ground. A team of people in biohazard suits crash through the door and push toward the creature. Before I can see what they are doing the boy gently places his hands on my shoulders and turns me around.
“You won’t want to see this.” He says.
“Tell me what’s going on.” I demand.
“I wish I could but I’m really not the right person for that.”
“Who the hell are you anyways? What is this place? What was-”
I gasp for air and my eyes begin to grow blurry. There’s the same feeling in my chest and stomach as before when I left the lecture hall. My legs crumple like tissue paper beneath me. I tumble to the ground. I see the boy crouch down and he’s saying something, but my ears fail to work. I can see that the he is trying to hold me up but I can’t feel him. My ears start to pick up some noise.
“It’s going to be okay. I’m sorry that you had to do this.” He tries to comfort me, but he sounds like he’s so far away.
“Was this real?” My breath is faint.
“Yes.” I look into his sea blue eyes and try to focus. They look so familiar to me.
“My name is Weston by the way, Weston Brandt.”
               CLAP
I feel like I am being pushed to the point of breaking. My stomach is being stretched out like elastic, letting go and snapping back into place, over and over. But then it stops.
I swallow the air like I might never be able to do it again and my eyes snap open. I paw around my surroundings. The sheets of the nurses bed soothe my fear. The stupid cat poster is a welcomed sight. I am back.
Was that a dream? Did I die and come back to life? Weston… my brother was there. That’s impossible. He’s dead.
I sit up on the bed, my head is pounding. That must have been a dream. I haven’t gone anywhere. I’ve been in this room the whole time… I think. My black dress is still covered in dirt.
“No, no, no.”  This must just be from today. There’s dirt everywhere but it could’ve gotten on me from walking or taking the bus or something. This doesn’t mean anything. I try wiping off the dirt stuck to my dress and I notice my hand. I turn it over and see the black smudges on my fingers. I smell my hands hoping that it’s not what I think it is.
It’s spray paint. The same spray paint from the message that was sprawled on the ground from wherever I was. That means that whole thing was real. That means my brother is alive.
