Celebratory Snippets: Pet Trade by Carol Van Natta #spaceopera #scifirom

I'm kicking off a series of celebratory snippets for December with Carol Van Natta's Pet Trade, part of her Central Galactic Concordance space opera series. Enjoy!

My space opera series is set far in to the future, where humankind has expanded to 500+ colonized planets across the galaxy. Most old Earth-based holidays have been replaced by observances of birthdays and Solstice Day (winter and summer). In this scene from Pet Trade, set in the far north latitudes of a frontier planet, the hero, ex-Jumper and cyborg Axur Tragon has used his medic training and his autodoc to repair the damaged leg of the heroine, Bethnee Bakonin. The next morning, she surprises him with Solstice Day gifts. The "critters" are Axur's various inherited pets. Bethnee, a veterinarian, has some of her own.

She levered herself up onto the crutches and made her way to the fresher, where they’d put her overnight bag to keep it safe from critters. When she returned, she put a package in front of him. “Happy Solstice Day.” She triggered her mealpack’s heater.
He blinked in surprise, darting his glance between her and the package. His smile grew as he untied the twine and opened it. “Real coffee!” He held the cloth bag to his nose and took in the scent appreciatively. He held up the other gift. “What’s on the longwire?”
“Common and relic language courses.” She pulled out the utensils from her mealpack. “You said you don’t have anyone to practice with. I only know Standard English and one city’s street slang, and Nuñez has mostly forgotten her family’s Tagalog, so I traded for the courses whenever I treated pets. You can help me expand my horizons. I need more swear words.”
He smiled as he put the longwire in his shirt pocket and patted it. “Thank you.”
Seeing how much the simple gifts pleased him, she vowed to give him as many as she could before he left for wider, warmer pastures. She must still be farked by the chems, because the thought made her want to hug him tight and cry on his broad shoulder.

Pet Trade (A Central Galactic Concordance Novella)
by Carol Van Natta

An injured veterinarian and a cyborg with unusual pets must join forces to save their town.
The vast Central Galactic Concordance strictly prohibits genetic experimentation and alteration of humans on any of its 500 member planets. Animals aren’t so lucky.
On a frontier planet, veterinarian Bethnee Bakonin made a home for herself in the frozen north. Her minder talent for healing all kinds of animals would ordinarily assure her success, but her unwilling stint in the shady pet trade industry left her damaged and scared. She works around her limitations as best she can, and rescues pet trade castoffs.
“Volunteered” for a black-box research project, elite forces Jumper Axur Tragon now has dangerous experimental tech in his cybernetic limbs. He escaped and crash-landed a stolen freighter in the northern mountains of a frontier planet, only to discover a secret shipment of designer pets was part of the cargo. Determined to do right by them, he enlists reluctant Bethnee’s aid in caring for them—a definite challenge, considering Bethnee is terrified of him.
When greedy mercenaries come raiding, can Axur and Bethnee work together to overcome their limitations, with help from their unusual pets, and save the day?
It's a deadly adventure—with pets—in the fringes of space. Grab your copy of Pet Trade today!

The more she reveals to Brom, the faster she expects him to leave. She quickly learns Orellians don't give up so easily, and Brom's as stubborn as they come.
But someone's been waiting for Nikki's return and the secret she guards. Its discovery could mean a chance at peace, or lead to all out war. In the wrong hands, even the best intentions can lead to catastrophe, and a promise can decay into regret.

#SFRBShowcase: Backtrack #scifi #romance #spaceopera #sfrb

Hello! Welcome to another SFRB Showcase. This month I'm going to share an excerpt from a WIP, working title Backtrack. This is a follow on to my space opera short Quickshot (since a couple of reviewers expressed an interest in seeing more of these characters and this universe). No promises when this will be available (sorry!) but you can always go read the current Imperium book if you haven't already. ;) (Warning: this isn't edited yet).

A hissing sound woke her, and she reached for her guns, adrenaline a cold jolt that blasted any sleepiness away. Devin stood at the end of the bed, in front of the multi-screen currently set to reflection. His pure white torso gleamed with a sheen almost like mother-of-pearl as he steadily passed a spray can back and forth over his body.
She rose and joined him.
"What is that?"
"Chromatic spray." He grinned at her puzzled expression in the mirror. "Watch." His brow furrowed, and his white skin shifted to jet black as if a shadow had run across it. An instant later, he turned light brown, then sickly gray, then a gleaming gold.
"Wow. And how does that work?"
"Chromatophore elements in the spray, combined with nanotech and my cybernetic implants, I can turn it any colour just by thinking about it. I can even change my face."
"Really?"
"Yup." He concentrated, and his face narrowed as his cheeks sunk as though sucked in. His eyebrows stretched out, points rose on his ears, his jawline widened, before snapping back to how he'd looked before, like the strings pulling it out of shape had snapped. "My visor too." The curved glasses morphed into a single strip of silver, then to huge disks almost covering his face.
"A man of many disguises," Sal murmured, swallowing the slight sense of nausea at the transformations.
"Yeah. When I need them." His skin became the warm light brown she remembered from their first meeting.
"You know, you don't have to do that just for me."
"Thanks. But..." He glanced at her reflection. "It's not just for you, or anyone else. It's for me. So I can look in the mirror and not see some albino freak staring back."

Blue Moon Holiday Tours
Find your dream destination among the stars!
Hello, my name is Melanda Troi, and I'd like to introduce you to the latest and hottest destination in our brochure - the tropical idyll of Kasha-Asor on the planet Metraxi.
Why should you visit? Well, have I mentioned the temperate climate, with 95% guaranteed sunshine during the extended summer? How about the fact that 70% of their land mass is small to medium sized islands, guaranteeing fairly secluded beaches of distinctive pale pink sand?
Or if you prefer moonlight walks by the sea, Metraxi has a single and rather attractive lunar satellite. Their moon also accounts for their gentle tides *hides winter weather statistics*
I suppose some might find the appearance of the native population somewhat...unsettling, but I can personally assure you of their friendliness!
Species: saurian
Planet of origin: Metraxi
Threat rating on the GC scale: moderate
However, visitors should be aware to read thoroughly all pre-arrival information regarding the planet before arrival to avoid any holiday spoilers such as an upset stomach.
Also exercise caution with certain marine species when diving/exploring the vast coral reefs.
Name: Sabre eel
Threat level: high (aggressive and territorial, soporific bite)

So Metraxi has lots to offer. Strings of tropical isles to pick and choose from, warm, safe seas *hides reports of gigantic sea monsters*, pink sand, a pretty moon, friendly natives, an extensive range of delicious seafood...oh, and did I mention Keir? Why don't you come visit?
Book your first ticket to Metraxi now for the bonus price of 100 Universal credits or 99 cents!

Read Only Wednesday - Starrie by Heidi Ruby Miller #spaceopera #scifi #romance

Read Only Wednesday is when I highlight a book I'm reading, about to read, or have added to my TBR/wishlist. This week it's Starrie by Heidi Ruby Miller. I'm a big fan of her Ambasadora series, which reminds me I need to get them in print.

SPACE OPERA WITH AN ENSEMBLE CAST!

***Please note that this book contains instances of graphic language, violence, and sexual situations.***

In this caste-ruled society, where multiple partners are the norm, celebrity, beauty, and power mean everything. Love and jealousy are considered emotional fallacies, nothing more than fleeting moods and sentiments biased by hormones. But sometimes people just fall in love...and that can be deadly.

Ben Anlow and his team embark on a revenge mission to bring down serial murderer and rapist, Liu Stavros, at his fortress in the inhospitable mountains of Tampa Three. But contractor Naela Starrie already has her own kind of vengeance planned for Stavros. Even as a battle-hardened soldier, Ben's not prepared for the darkness he sees in the female assassin, nor the way she challenges his prejudices about her people when she makes a sacrifice to save to his life. Kindle 190 pages $2.99

PS There's currently a Goodreads giveaway for Starrie, open internationally until the 30th April. Go HERE to enter!

Tuesday Teaser - Quickshot #spaceopera #scifi #romance

Because Quickshot released just last week, I've decided to share a teaser of my own today. Warning: contains explicit language and some grim desciptions. This is taken from fairly early on in the story as Sal is stuck on Denga station waiting for something to occupy her...

Three lunar rotations later...
This sucks Kyvellian dick. Sal stalked the narrow walkways of Denga station, silently daring anyone to get in her way. They didn’t. Her reputation swept a clear path ahead of her, which only infuriated her more. A good fight right now would at least break the monotony of being stuck on the station waiting for a job. A good fuck would work better, but her bed remained as empty as the Barony Bitch’s cargo hold. She needed one or the other filling, and soon.
In the meantime, she had to eat, and a drink might take the edge off her temper, so she headed for her favorite eatery. The Big Bang was a rough dive, but the alcohol was cheap, the clientele were varied, and no one went there looking for trouble. Sal’s trigger-happy status meant only the terminally drunk were stupid enough to bother her. Usually by the time anyone was that drunk she didn’t even need her weapons. Intent on drowning her sorrows and then some, Sal wasn’t worried about someone harassing her. Not here.
“Hey, Sal.” Cheery, the bartender, greeted her, and indicated an empty booth with a nod of his head. Cheery had got his name from someone slitting his cheeks open, giving him an artificial grin from ear to ear. He liked the nickname so much he hadn’t bothered having corrective surgery. He wore the scars as a badge of honor—and possibly to remind the clientele that, despite the injury, he’d gutted both assailants attempting to rob him, then pinned their preserved hides over the bar until the health and hygiene board demanded their removal. The message had got around.
“Hey.” She flashed him a bright grin, and took her seat in the booth. It left her facing away from the door, but a specially angled mirror meant she could watch who was coming in if she felt the need.
“Hey, Sal. Cheery sent over your usual. Triple shot rocket fuel.” The skinny young barmaid slid her a tall glass full of golden liquid and crushed ice. Sal swallowed quickly to stop herself from dribbling. She hadn’t had a drink in months, and this was Cheery’s smoothest stuff. If she didn’t go too overboard on it, she wouldn’t even have much of a hangover tomorrow.
“Thanks. Any chance of some food?” Her stomach growled in agreement.
“Sure. Special is Millennium Shrimp.”
“Seafood? Wow, Cheery’s really going upmarket.”
The barmaid snorted. “Freeze dried imports. Cargo ship got stranded here when trouble broke out on the edge of the system and the jump-gate got hijacked. Then the captain drank his docking fees so they seized the ship.”
“Hmm.” One person’s misfortune was another’s promise of a decent meal. “I’ll take it. And a side order of Cheery’s hot sauce.”
The barmaid raised her eyebrows. “You want that and the rocket fuel? Your stomach must be titanium lined.”
Sal grinned and gave her a wink. “Yeah, but my taste buds aren’t.”
Dinner was the best she’d had in forever. She hadn’t eaten seafood since leaving her home planet. True, it wasn’t as good as the fish gumbo her adoptive parents had made, but the shrimp still tasted of the sea, and Cheery’s hot sauce hid the aftertaste typical of space-shipped food. And with her second triple shot already half consumed, it was looking like a good evening.
Then a man slid into her booth, put one arm around her shoulder and ran his other hand up her thigh while whispering desperately in her ear. “Please. Pretend you know me for the next five minutes.”

Sal, a legal carrier (just about) of whatever comes her way, puts her trust in just two things: her guns.

Keeping out from under Imperium eyes—especially those belonging to a certain Ehi Wahu—while making a living, and trying to keep a lover who can tolerate her twitchy trigger fingers, are the extent of her ambitions.

Then a kiss from a passing stranger, and a promise of the biggest score in a long time, tempt her. Devin fulfils more than one need, but he comes with more trouble than one woman can handle. And this time it'll take more than her guns to save her. She'll have to trust a man again.

The #SFRBShowcase - Look But Don't Touch! #scifi #romance #spaceopera #sfrb

Hello! Welcome to this month's SFR Brigade Showcase. This time I'm sharing an excerpt from my latest release (it went live just yesterday), hot space opera short Quickshot. For this snippet, my heroine Sal is just chilling out when an interloper forces her to demonstrate her touchy trigger finger. But with good reason...

Rage hotter than Cheery’s sauce exploded inside her, along with the overwhelming relief of finally having an outlet for her fury.
The next instant, the interloper had the separate barrels of one double blaster either side of his throat so that her fist rested hard against his Adams apple.
“Um.” The not quite a word came out like a whimper as he put his hands in the air
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t spatter your feeble sack of brains against the wall behind you?” she growled. She felt him gulp, his throat moving against her knuckles.
“Because I’ll...pay you? Lots?” Large, semi-translucent shades curved to fit his face hid the color of his eyes, but she saw him blink rapidly as she pushed the gun a little harder into his flesh. “Or, if you wait a few seconds, the local authorities can save you the bother.”
His eyes flicked to the right, and she warily followed suit, leaning ever so slightly around the edge of her booth. Not Imperium rezzers as she’d feared, but the local patroni were indeed at the door, and she didn’t owe them any favors. Mind you, she owed this feck more than a slap after he’d touched her without permission or even an introduction. But she was cargo-less right now, badly in need of the work, and he’d mentioned payment.
She eased off a fraction. “How much to not kill you?”
“Whatever you want. Anything at all.” He said it with such sincerity, his breathing so ragged, that, for an instant, Sal imagined him under her, tied to her bed, naked. The light tan skin at the unbuttoned collar of his shirt was sheened in sweat.
