A Bit of
History
In the ‘early’ days after the Terror
Wars, the SkyRyders policed themselves. They decided which laws and regulations
they would enforce and which could be overlooked. Unfortunately, not everyone
who joined their ranks were there for the right reason, but most believed there
were sufficient ‘good’ soldiers to control and discipline the rogue ones. And
it mostly seemed to work until one rogue officer became a five-star general. He
did this by being an outstanding soldier until the council of generals made him
top dog. Then he slyly began his criminal activities of selling Skyryder armory
to anyone with the cash to buy them.
While no one had figured out how to
ship an apple overseas, the general had concocted a way to move SkyRyder
weaponry to the Russians and the Czechs. Still most were sold to scavengers and
drug dealers in the Americas.
Fortunately, a one-star general,
Daniel Kane, who cared more for his country than he did his life, acquired
evidence and revealed the crime to the Generals Council. While they sentenced
the 5-star general to death, they forced Daniel Kane to leave the Sky-Ryders on
trumped up charges, with a warning that if even one newshound got wind of the armory
story, he would be executed.

has captured her extraordinary flight through the Cully and her flying is
astounding!
He forgoes arresting
her and puts his career at risk by asking MAC to assess her skills and
integrity as a potential SkyRyder. If he can get Alisha into the SkyRyders, it
will be his greatest contribution to the Corps.
Meet MAC: The Artificial Intelligence
that runs the SkyRyders Corps.
Upon seeing her
arrival, MAC upgrades Alisha’s test. Her flying skills are not just excellent;
they exceed what was previously thought possible. MAC classifies her as its top
asset and soon she proves her value.
But…the SkyRyders remain a male dominated Corps where Alisha’s
sense of right and wrong often clashes with her superiors. How long can a
rebellious young woman survive in a regimented Corps?
Excerpt
A
conversation between two colonels: Riley who runs MAC & Logan.
“I know you’ve never thought much of MAC, but I’m closer to
its day-to-day activities, and I gotta tell you, it seems to get the right
answer, certainly more often than our old methods.”
“Maybe, but I’d still feel a lot better if these things were
handled by real Ryders.”
“Well, you wouldn’t if you’d been Daniel Kane,” Riley
quipped.
“What?” Logan said. What
did Alisha’s grandfather have to do with anything?
“Daniel Kane. He was unquestionably the best flyer the
SkyRyders have ever had. He rose through the ranks, became a one-star general,
then went head to head against a five-star General named Cohen. Do you remember
him?”
“I was just a cadet when the guy got booted. He was black
marketing our supplies, I think.”
“Right. He’s the reason why there are hidden cameras in our
supply rooms, which I’ve noticed you’re asking for yours. Anything to do with
this open inquiry?”
“It’s related.”
“Then you won’t see it. MAC will pull it up here.”
Logan sighed. Damn meddling program. “You were trying to
tell me why I should feel better about MAC dispensing justice over members of
my own Corps.”
“Because the Corps didn’t dispense justice to the man who
brought General Cohen’s crime to light. Instead, they drummed him out of the
Corps on trumped-up charges that even a first-year advocate could have
refuted.”
The news astounded him. “If we know this, then why haven’t
we reinstated him?” Logan asked. “Hell, then the poor man could buy his own
medicine!”
“Kane died over ten years ago.”
“Daniel Kane is not
dead. I just spoke to him today and gave him the happy news that his
granddaughter would be taking her flight test tomorrow.”
The silence on the other end was deafening.
“Riley, are you still there?” Logan finally asked.
“Yeah…I’m just falling off chairs. Are you telling me your
girl is the granddaughter of Daniel Kane?”
“Yes. And I’m also telling you Daniel Kane is alive and
being very ill-treated by the Corps.”

Liza O’Connor lives in Denville, NJ
with her dog Jess. They hike in fabulous woods every day, rain or shine, sleet
or snow. Having an adventurous nature, she learned to fly small Cessnas in NJ,
hang-glide in New Zealand, kayak in Pennsylvania, ski in New York, scuba dive
with great white sharks in Australia, dig up dinosaur bones in Montana, sky
dive in Indiana, and raft a class four river in Tasmania. She’s an avid
gardener, amateur photographer, and dabbler in watercolors and graphic arts.
Yet through her entire life, her first love has and always will be writing
