A Little Quickshot For #PrideMonth #scifirom #SFRGalaxyAward

As it's Pride Month I thought I'd share the opening excerpt from my SFR Galaxy Award winning scifi romance short Quickshot, featuring my trigger-happy, bi heroine Sal...
Sal stared at the multi-colored data streaming across her status display, using one foot to rock herself in her seat.
“Hey.”
Sal spun, double-barreled blasters in both hands. The dark-skinned beauty leaning through the hatch threw up both hands in surrender. “Whoa, t’hani!”
Damn. Sal sucked in a breath, lifting her fingers from the triggers and pointing her guns upward. “Sorry. Guess I’m still twitchy.”
“That’s more than twitchy.” Dela scowled, wrapping her shaking arms around herself. “One day you’ll blow someone’s head off. And I don’t want it to be me.”
“It won’t.” Sal forced herself to holster the guns even though every instinct in her body wanted her to keep hold of them. She slid from her chair, and had Dela in her arms faster than the woman could raise an objection. Dela’s heart pounded against Sal’s chest, a perfect match to the racing of her own pulse. She’d almost shot her lover, damn it. Why couldn’t she stop the automatic response to grab her weapon when startled? She held Dela tight as if clinging to her last hope.
Dela sighed. “Sal, I’m not Ehi. If you keep pulling weapons on me, more than my pride will get hurt.”
She’s right. “I know. I just—”
“Forgot I was onboard?”
“Yeah. I mean no. I mean—”
“Forget it.” Dela shoved away and stalked off, Sal in pursuit.
“Deh...” She caught her arm and turned the slight woman toward her. Away from the lights of the control room, Dela was almost invisible, except for the luminous amber eyes currently glaring at Sal fit to scorch her.
“Dela.” Sal softened and lowered her voice in the way she knew made Dela weak at the knees, and her lover quivered in response. Sal smiled and brushed her fingers lightly along Dela’s arms, feeling the goosebumps rise on the flawless skin. “Let me make it up to you, t’hani.”
For an instant the woman wavered, and Sal’s pulse quickened, an ache already spreading from her groin. Then Dela shook off her hand.
“No. You’ve pulled those pistols on me once too often, and there aren’t enough orgasms in the universe worth being shot in the head for.” Dela walked away.
Frustrated, angry at herself and now horny as Hades, Sal slouched back into the control room. She groaned as she slid into her pilot’s seat, considering some self-maintenance to ease the ache in her lower regions.
“Approaching drop out.” The soft voice of the ship’s computer stalled even that release.
Sal groaned again. “Let Dela know.” Once they hit port Sal could heal the breach by plying Dela with whatever she wanted. Maybe a bolt of those bright fabrics Dela adored, or a crate of her favorite tea that was so frigging hard to get hold of. Sal had contacts who could find those kind of things. She might even get lucky in bed tonight...

Sal, a legal carrier (just about) of whatever comes her way, puts her trust in just two things: her guns.

Keeping out from under Imperium eyes—especially those belonging to a certain Ehi Wahu—while making a living, and trying to keep a lover who can tolerate her twitchy trigger fingers, are the extent of her ambitions.

Then a kiss from a passing stranger, and a promise of the biggest score in a long time, tempt her. Devin fulfils more than one need, but he comes with more trouble than one woman can handle. And this time it'll take more than her guns to save her. She'll have to trust a man again.

May The Fourth Be With Me... #SFRGalaxyAward #scifirom

It seems the title for my latest release has been even more appropriate than I ever thought. Not only was Unexpected a surprise (and my only) release of 2017, having originally been intended as an anthology submission, but just this week it won a SFR Galaxy Award for one of the best and most interesting aliens, and my fourth award since they began. I'm so chuffed! Of course I love my first contact romance novella and my two MCs, but there's nothing like the buzz of knowing someone else loved them too, and enough to list them as one of their standout reads of the year.
The SFR Galaxy Awards have been running for six years now, recognizing not just science fiction romance books, but also films, TV shows and computer games in that time. There's no open entry - the judges are entirely free to pick anything they feel has really impressed them in the genre of SciFi Romance, regardless of what media form it takes. You can find out more about the awards and the judges involved by clicking HERE.

Unexpected is mentioned HERE (and I'm in fantastic company!), but you can check out the book itself by clicking any of the links under the cover image on the right hand side of this blog, or visiting the webpage HERE.

Unexpected: An Alien Romance
Love can come when it’s least expected...
When an injured alien crashes on her planet, Soraya follows her instinct to repair and restore it despite the challenge of their differing physiology. But as she gets closer to her patient and he recovers, Soraya confronts a whole new form of existence...and a desire that could destroy her completely.
Yoran chose exile in order to release the woman he thought his soulmate from a marriage contract she had no wish to fulfill, and almost paid for it with his life. Now he finds himself drawn to his alien savior. But how can he ask her to give up the only existence she knows when he’s already suffered the consequences of such a sacrifice himself?
A First Contact Science Fiction Romance novella. Available in all ebook formats from Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and Apple.

Quickshot: #SFRGalaxyAward Winner!

So yesterday was the announcement of the fifth SFR Galaxy Award winners, and I got a bit of surprise. Quickshot scored my third award as Grittiest Hot & Fast Story. Lol. I'm especially pleased as it was the only new work I put out last year and during a low period of my publishing career. A better start to 2017, huh? I have to give a big shoutout to Diane Dooley for her editing skills, and Dani Fine for that oh so beautiful artwork (I'll admit that out of the covers she's done for me, this is probably my favourite, but don't tell the others!).

Quickshot joins my time travel romance Keir and and scifi adventure Gethyon as former SFR Galaxy Award winnners, along with a One Book Two 2016 Standout Award for Keir's Fall at the start of this year. Two awards in the first month is pretty shiny!

Congrats to the other winners, and to the judges on their fifth year. You can see the other worthy winners here, or jump directly to what judge Anna McClain had to say about Quickshot here.

Cover Reveal - Gethyon: A Travellers Universe Novel #scifi #adventure #SFRGalaxyAward

It's been a long time coming, but Gethyon is finally returning to the virtual book shelves! It's been updated, extended with all new material and a bonus short story added to the end. And it has a shiny new cover courtesy of RavenFire Media. Enjoy!

Blurb:

Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.

Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves: a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the unwelcome return of Tarquin Secker—the mother who abandoned him—and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it’ll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It’ll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.

A science fiction adventure novel previously published by BURST (Champagne Books), and part of the Travellers Universe. A 2014 SFR Galaxy Award Winner for Most Awesome Psychic Talent and a 2015 EPIC eBook Awards finalist in the Science Fiction category. Also now includes the SF short story The Bones of the Sea

“With colorful worlds full of nuance and dimension, characters that walk off the page, and themes that anyone who has been either parent or child can relate to.” J.C. Cassels, author of The Black Wing Chronicles series

“This fast-paced, gripping ride zips through time and space, love and loss, rebellion and acceptance.” Anna McLain, SFR Galaxy Award judge

Gethyon - #SFRGalaxyAwards winner!

Some of you may (or may not) know that I'm one of the admins for a fantastic group called the Science Fiction Romance Brigade, a dedicated group of authors, readers and publishing professionals committed to promoting the genre of SFR. As part of that, this January saw the 2nd Annual SFR Galaxy Awards, and while I didn't expect to win anything (it's not a contest you can enter since the judges choose from their personal favourite reads over the previous year), I was committed to posting the results to our fanpage on Facebook (psst, check it out HERE. We feature giveaways, new releases, freebies, news, contests, and a fair bit of SF/SFR humour and cuteness!). On Saturday I duly shared a link from Charlee Allden of Smart Girls love Scifi announcing the upcoming results...and promptly forgot about them. D'oh! Bad admin! But weekends are family time and I'm not supposed to be online at all.. Not much of an excuse, but it's all I have. >.<

So I was reminded about the event in a rather surprising way - a message on Twitter from fellow Brigader Veronica Scott congratulating me on my win. Whut?! Yep. My YA SciFi Gethyon had been awarded Most Awesome Psychic Talent. Woot! After a bit of flailing and some frantic sharing of results to the fanpage, I sat back to enjoy my win and change my Twitter profile. With Keir garnering a Best May To September Romance last year, I can now call myself a double SFR Galaxy Award winner. Woo hoo!

The great thing about the SFR Galaxy Awards is there are no fixed categories, and no way to enter. The judges just pick their stand out read (or sometimes film) of the year and chose their own award title. I love the novelty of the idea (and not just because I've won a couple). It can give you a really intriguing insight into why certain books stuck in a reader's mind, and a bit different from getting a review.

If you'd like to know more about the awards, the winners and the judges, you should check out the website HERE.

I was also flattered to get a mention as editor for the Amazon Kindle store version of Tales from the SFR Brigade on the anthology website HERE. I spent the end of 2013 fixing a few formatting issues and uploading Tales to Amazon and ARe. I also created a print edition purely for giveaways (you can enter to win an ultra-rare, cannot-be-bought print edition HERE) with a huge amount of help on the wrap around cover from Misa Buckley.

Both have made for a very satisfactory wrap up for 2013, despite issues throughout January. Kudos to the other SFR Galaxy Award winners, including a double for Cathy Pegau, and wins for Misa Buckley, Veronica Scott, Rebecca Royce, Kyndra Hatch and Sonya Clark. Congrats!

One Month In

So it's February already and another half term school holiday is rushing toward me. Having missed my stint over at Spacefreighters Lounge this week due to illness - the first time I haven't posted there this year as part of my New Year's pledge to blog more - I thought a quick catch up post on January might be a good idea.

What I've done

The edits for my scifi romance novella Tethered came back from my lovely editor Dani, and after following her suggestions, it's now out on submission. Expected turnaround time for a response is 12-16 weeks. Fingers crossed!

The edits for Gethyon came...and went. Blink and you'd have missed it! Nice to know that my writing has improved enough not to need the depth of editing that poor Keir required, plus it being half the length at just 50K compared to 100.

My test results all came back with the conclusion that I'm chronically anaemic. While that's nothing to be ignored, it certainly isn't as terminal as I feared.

I've taken on a couple more admin responsibilities with the SFR Brigade on the Facebook group and fanpage. This week sees the first of The SFR Brigade Presents feature with up to 20 Brigaders posting snippets in a style along the lines of the now ended Six Sentence Sunday. This is currently replacing the Amazon tagging parties since Amazon is removing tagging.

My long overdue website finally went live, with me having mastered the art of hosting and domain names (and boy! was that a mental challenge!). The website itself had actually been constructed way back in August 2012 along with the purchase of my own domain - www.pippajay.co.uk. Nifty, huh? But aside from the technical issues, I felt it was never quite ready to go. I realized that, like a lot of my writing, I was never going to think of it as finished and I should just do it.

30th January - Samaritan, a scifi short and one of Quin's adventures before those set down in Keir, went to my editor. I'd intended to publish this story a year ago, but feedback on CritiqueCircle at the time convinced me it wasn't ready. Now it's under my editor's critical eye for sculpting into shape.

31st January - I completed the remake of a book trailer for my YA scifi novel coming out in June with Champagne Books - Gethyon.

What's been happening

I received notification that Keir had scored a 2nd place win in the You Gotta Read Reviews Cover Contest. Yay! A huge thank you to its creator - cover designer and owner of Lyrical Press Inc. Renee Rocco - and to everyone who voted. Keir is most grateful for the love shown!

31st January - and to finish the month on a high, Keir won Best May to December Romance in the first SFR Galaxy Awards! Thank you! And congrats to all the other winners, some in multiple categories. You can check them all out here.

Where am I?

I'm visiting the lovely Cassandra Page here with three other authors, talking about what music we like to listen to while writing, and why lyrics are the bane of our existence. :-P

It's feature week for Keir over on the Indie Books R Us blog here, with a book spotlight, review, interview and giveaway to come. Find out which of my bad guys would win and which secondary characters might be scoring their own book.

Still to come

I'm still waiting to hear back about my submission to the SFR Brigade anthology. In the meantime, I've just completed the rough draft for a scifi short Flaming Angel in response to an in-house call by Champagne. At the moment I'm struggling to edit it, but I have another three months to work on it still. The sequel...is still hanging around in my Documents file, awaiting a home. But with one novel and potentially three short stories to come out this year, I feel justified in not rushing with anything else just yet. I still have two novellas from last year I'd like to work on and have at least one ready for submission by the end of 2013.

From today, it's the first of The SFR Brigade Presents feature, with 20 sfr authors presenting snippets of their work to read and enjoy!

It's the Great Steampunk Romance Airship tour at Spacefreighters Lounge from the 4th-13th February!
