And now, book 2. The cover…

Evolution: SAGE (the Evolution series, book 2) New Adult Superhero Romance
Release date: May 6th, 2014
Synopsis: "Devastated by her choices, Candace Bristol is on the brink of losing it all: her mind, her hope, everything she thought she was. But from the ruins rises new purpose. An enemy has emerged and it will take everything to combat this new threat. Broken as she is, picking up the pieces and carrying on might be the hardest battle to win, but it's either fight, or lose what little she has left. Amongst the wreckage, hope still burns. The flicker of a flame kindles something within her she thought was dead. Love can break you. So, too, can it bring you back to life."

And here’s a little sneak peek at the book…
Welcome home.
The emotions overwhelmed her as she slipped into the pool, sinking to the bottom.
Home.
Belonging.
Acceptance.
Comfort.
Candace didn’t know if she deserved to feel any of this, but there was no arguing with her connection to the water. It didn’t care about her mistakes. She had been missed.
She swam, moving back and forth through the water, soaking up more and more of the solitude and unexpected peace. Closing her eyes and floating, she turned inward, pushing past all of the hurt, all of the guilt, all of the loss, and drifted in a sea of calm. In the back of her mind, she knew this relief was only temporary. Eventually she would have to return to her other existence, the one where everyone wanted— expected— things from her.
Where she expected things from herself.
Jackson was right, of course. As much as she hated to admit it, his words were the slap in the face she needed. Once again, Candace was in his debt.
She frowned. There was a strange back and forth between them, an ever-shifting imbalance of helping one another. Funny, considering he was such a jerk otherwise. If he were consistently nice, maybe it wouldn’t sit with her so uncomfortably. As he ran more cold than hot with her, she never knew where she stood or what to expect. It was frustrating. Jackson Lawrence was not easily categorized or pinned down. Honestly, she couldn’t say with any amount of certainty whether or not she detested Jackson or kind of liked him, although the thought of liking someone as unlikable as him disturbed her on multiple levels. Did she have that much self-loathing that she’d attempt to spend more time with him?
She shivered. No. Definitely not. She more or less hated herself, but wasn’t about to hang around people who made her feel worse.
She took a breath and dove backwards, under the surface again. Life was too complicated. This was simpler. Maybe she could hole up here and no one would notice.
Swimming to the far end, she emerged at the side of the pool to catch her breath.
A crowd of people waited for her. She stared back at seven shocked faces.
“What?”
Jackson shook loose from the grasp of two armed soldiers. “Satisfied? She’s fine. Can I go now?”
“You’re still in trouble, Jackson. Shut the hell up.” True stepped to the edge and crouched down. “You scared us, sugar. What are you doing here?”
“Um… swimming?” Candace said. “Sorry. I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed.”
True shook her head and grinned. “Didn’t you hear the alarms? We’ve been looking for you for thirty minutes. Why didn’t you tell someone?”
Candace shot Jackson a sidelong look. “There was no one to tell.”
Amir Jones rubbed his face and sighed. “Yeah, we noticed.”
Dina was silent, but shifted nervously. Hector was also quiet, but looked more pissed than nervous.
“You all right, Candy Cane?” True asked. “If you want some company, I can suit up and—“
“No!” Candace interrupted. “God, no. Sorry, True, but all I really want is some peace and quiet without people constantly talking to me. No, I’m not okay. I probably never will be. But, holy hell, if I have to deal with one more day of everyone treating me like a broken doll I might actually consider drowning myself just to avoid it.”
True grimaced. “You know we’re all trying to help you, right?”
She sighed. “I know, I know. But, seriously. I can’t think with everyone hovering like this. I just… I can’t. I appreciate what you guys tried to do. Really.” She pushed back from the side, treading water. “No one else can fix me, True. I’ll figure it out.”
She dove under again, blocking out everything but her connection to the water. The next time she came up for air, they were gone.

Meet the #Author Monday - Starla Huchton #giveaway #NA #SFR

Please tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m a geek of many stripes, interested in everything from Doctor Who to superheroes to the odd craft project and slight obsession with personality quizzes (for me and everyone I know). My writing tends to reflect a lot of my varied interests. When I’m not writing or designing book covers, I’m chasing 3 kids and trying not to let the crazy military spouse life obliterate what sanity I have left. :)
Tell us about Evolution: ANGEL:
The goal of the Evolution series is to bring everything I love about comic books into novel format. The characters come from all walks of life, though it is primarily one hero's origin story, and it becomes an origin story for something much larger than that. It's a gamma-radiation-infused journey that looks at what it means to be a hero, including the sacrifices that come with accepting great power and what drives a person to become something more. It is NOT a YA story as it contains graphic language, adult situations, and violence (and all the feels as well).
What inspired you to write this particular story?:
It was one of those things that I never expected to write. I mean, I have an unfettered love for comics and their movies and superheroes, but never in my life did I ever think I’d be writing about them. I guess it just takes the right idea firing in your synapses. My kids were watching the Fantastic Four movie, and, after wandering off to tend to other things that needed doing, BOOM, idea hits me. Funny how those things work, isn’t it?
Please share a favourite snippet from your book:

Her senses exploded in every direction, pulled every which way by the water completely surrounding her. She swam along the bottom, addicted to the feel of the currents moving over her skin. Candace spun below the surface, like she was the center of a tornado, and plowed through to the far wall, finally surfacing with a gasp. She’d given up the swim team in seventh grade for track, but at the moment, she couldn’t imagine why. Now, swimming felt like the most natural thing in the world, maybe more than walking.
Scooping up a handful of water, she shaped it into one of her shimmering vines and wove it through her fingers, considering the weight of it, feel of it, the amount of force required to keep the shape and movement. Amused, she flung it away from her, like slinging spider webs from her wrist. She couldn’t keep from giggling. After a few rounds of that, she was back to swimming laps, twirling and twisting in the water for so long she started to feel overheated.
Candace slung her arms along the ledge, catching her breath and trying to cool down. The longer she stayed that way, the more something nagged at her. It wasn’t her that was overheated. The water was actually warmer than it had been. Frowning, she looked around. Still alone. Then what? Was her presence and ability causing the rise in temperature? She closed her eyes. After a minute or two, she let go of the edge, sinking down into the water to investigate. Her toes touched the bottom and she stabilized herself, letting the liquid surrounding her send the information she needed. Each molecule had a voice in her head, quiet, but there. She listened to them, trying to feel for any changes in their energy signatures.
The world exploded into warmth and motion as someone yanked her up by an arm, dragging her towards the surface. Forgetting where she was, she opened her mouth to scream, but got a huge gulp of water for her trouble. Candace found herself face down on the tiled floor, coughing up what she swallowed.
Terrified there was more coming, she scrambled to her feet to see who was responsible for scaring her shitless.
“Slow down, Sugar Plum. I think you’re safe now.”
She spun on the slick tile to face him. “Jackson? What the hell? What are you doing here?”
He was soaked from head to toe. Had he pulled her out of the pool? Why?
He scowled at her. “I was coming for a swim. That’s what people do in pools.”
Was he kidding? He was still in his clothes, shoes and all. “So, what, you have a thing against wearing swim trunks or something?”
“When I saw you stuck at the bottom I didn’t get that far. Why do you always need rescuing? It’s annoying.”
Her jaw dropped. “Rescuing? You thought I was drowning?”
Jackson looked confused. “You were down there a long time. That’s usually a good indicator of drowning.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him. “You scared the crap out of me. I was fine. I was…” She stopped. How could she explain it?
“What?”
“Practicing,” Candace said with a sniff.
“Practicing?” Jackson chortled. “Practicing what, dying?”
Done arguing, she stomped past him, wrapping her towel around her and collecting her things. She was pretty sure everyone and their dog knew she had a water ability by now, and he definitely would, as closely as he seemed to watch her. The locker room wasn’t far and at least she’d be able to escape him there.
“You’re welcome, Sugar Plum.”
She threw him a withering glance. “I didn’t need your help, Jackson. Don’t pretend like this was anything more than an excuse for you to see me half-naked.”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
Done with him, she rolled her eyes and pushed open the door. Finally, this was one place he couldn’t follow her.
Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:
It seems to be different for every book for me. With the Evolution series, the first thing I thought of was the end climax of the book. From there, it became a matter of figuring out who those people were and what got them into that ultimate situation. With the Endure series, it was the setting and the main couple. The Steampunk Adventure I have coming out later this year, Master of Myth, it was the personality of my main character. And with the project I’m currently working on, it was the friendship between two opposite-personality women. So, it really varies a lot.
Any tips for aspiring authors?:
Stop aspiring and DO. The best piece of advice you can take to heart is to write and keep writing. The longer you do it, the better you get at it, and the easier it will get. The rest you can figure out using the Internet. ;)
Questions for fun:
If you had the power of time travel, is there anything you would go back and change? Why/why not?:
I prefer not to mess with time travel. Just thinking about it hurts my brain. One cannot calculate all the little changes its possible to make and what consequences those will have on the future. I think most things happen for a reason, and I wouldn’t be who and where I am today without where I’ve been before. And I’m okay with that.
What super-power would you choose?:
The one power I think would come in handy is the ability to temporally reverse non-living things. I’m not a fan of immortality, but being able to “rewind” an object to the moment before something happened to it would be insanely handy. Like that time I spilled coffee on my laptop. Or when a child takes a pair of scissors to the furniture. Now that’s a superpower anyone could use.
If you could have three wishes, what would they be?:
Without being able to wish for more wishes, I’d probably wish for a greater conscience for people who lack it. So much of today’s problems could be solved by people having a little more humanity in their decisions. I’d wish for the world to have greater literacy, and time and desire to read, because it’s scientifically provable that reading fiction makes people more empathetic, increases creativity (thus critical thinking skills to solve problems), and gives more understanding of the world around us. Then I would wish that everyone buy my books to read, because I’m only two-thirds selfless. LOL
Coffee, tea or wine?:
ALL THE COFFEE.
What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!):
The Counte of Monte Cristo, followed closely by the works of Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers’ Guide and Dirk Gently series).
Favourite genre and why?:
This really varies for me. I write a lot of science fiction stuff, but my roots are really more in fantasy. Typically when I read, I’m more likely to read something paranormal in nature, but not necessarily romance. I’m not a big lit-fic or horror fan, but there are exceptions to every rule.
Favourite colour?:
Red. Always red.
Upcoming news and plans for the future?:
This year is going to be a big year for me, book-wise. All three Evolution books will be released by July, and then I have Master of Myth (a steampunk adventure) coming in September (Talk Like A Pirate Day!). It’s entirely possible I’ll have a fifth book crammed in sometime before New Years Eve as well, but I think four books in the wild is a pretty good goal for a 12-month period.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!

Excerpt:
Prologue

She jumped, trying to see over the crowd in front of her. This was so stupid. Why would they stick her in the back? Wasn’t showing off to as many people as possible the whole point of this?

“Calm down, Candace,” Gabe said. “You keep stepping on my foot.”

She shot him her best “drop dead” look. “Calm down? I’ve been dying to see these guys since they made the announcement last year. Do you have any idea how many chores I had to promise my mom I’d do before she’d sign my permission slip to come to this thing?” She pinched her face and did her best impression of her mother. “Candace, I don’t want you filling up your head with any more garbage than those comic books already put in there.”

Gabe sighed and patted her head. Even at fifteen, only a year older than her, her cousin was already six inches taller. It wasn’t fair. Gabe had no problem seeing past the Neanderthals in front of them. “Don’t worry, Princess. Maybe you can sit on my shoulders or something when they come around.”

She rolled her eyes. “Not funny. And don’t call me Princess.”

“Sure thing, Candy Cane.”

“Ugh. Again with that nickname. Can you knock that off? We’re not kids anymore.”

He thought carefully. “Hmm, would you prefer Cupcake?”

Before she could reply, or punch him, music blared through the loudspeakers on the steps of the capital building. Her heart leapt. They were here! She was actually going to see honest-to-God superheroes in the flesh!

Candace looked in either direction, trying to find an opening where she might be able to push through and get a better vantage point. She went left. Nothing. She went right. Still nothing.

No, wait. Definitely something.

The large fountain wasn’t working. It was roped off and marked as under construction, and no one gave it a second look. The crowd was riveted to the top of the stairs, staring at the guests she couldn’t see.

Yet.

She took a last peek at Gabe, who was completely engrossed in the spectacle, and sunk low as she crept toward the fountain. She wasn’t going to have endured a crowded, eight-hour bus ride to Des Moines with a bunch of smelly dudes for nothing. She came here to see superheroes, and damned if she wasn’t going to do exactly that.

The street police were lined up on the other side of the fountain with their backs to her, as captivated as the rest of the onlookers. Candace ducked between the strips of caution tape and threw her legs over the metal rail. After soaking her shoes in the remnants of the drained water, she clambered up two of the five tiers of the centerpiece and leaned around.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the Governor said. “Today we mark a new era in the fight against crime, terrorism, and even natural disaster. With the founding of the US Government’s ANGEL Project, we hope to usher in a new time of peace and security for every last one of us. These brave individuals have given over their lives and their very bodies in pursuit of this goal, and it is my extreme pleasure to present to you two representatives of the ultimate first responder unit, the Aquila Team: Marissa Hayden and Christian Markov!”

The applause was thunderous and immediate, but Candace tuned it out. The ANGELs were amazing. Two people, not much older than her, and here they were.

Real life superheroes.

The pair stepped up to the microphone, ready to give a joint speech. Candace couldn’t take her eyes off of them. They moved with a smooth, preternatural grace, as though they were intentionally slowing themselves for the benefit of the onlookers. Marissa’s smile was radiant as she waved to the crowd. Her caramel-colored skin was flawless. Her thick, black hair hung in the most beautiful waves across her shoulders. Candace wished she had half of the curves this woman displayed in her black, form-fitted skinsuit.

Christian was no less impressive physically, but in a different way. He tossed a little nod of acknowledgment down the steps to a group of squealing high school girls. He was the ultimate definition of an All-American guy: clean cut, blond, blue-eyed, the works. The man had it all and then some. It was no wonder he’d become the ANGEL Project’s poster child. Candace snorted. Yay diversity.

A hush passed over the crowd when he held his hand up, indicating they were ready for the speech. Candace leaned forward even more, her fingers digging into the slippery slime around the fountain ledge.

Christian opened his mouth.

Before so much as a word was spoken, the ground rumbled. Candace didn’t notice it at first, but the nervous shifting of the crowd caught her attention.

It caught the ANGELs’ attention as well.

“Everyone get out of here!” Christian yelled into the microphone.

The police surged forward, doing their best to herd the confused mass of people away from the steps. Someone screamed, soon accompanied by more shouts of alarm. The fountain shook violently and Candace slipped. She scrambled to get a better hold, but it crumbled away, splitting up the middle, followed by an explosion of water that blasted her backwards into the concrete pool. Her back hit the bottom, knocking the air from her lungs, and her skull cracked against the ledge, filling her vision with sparkling lights.

When she could see clearly again, someone stood over her.

He was a massive man, shirtless, shaking, and staring at her with wild eyes. When he sucked in a ragged breath, foamy spittle oozed from the corners of his mouth.

“Tasty…” he hissed at her, bending lower, hands outstretched.

The scream stuck in her throat as terror wrapped its icy talons around her neck.

Another body slammed into the man’s torso, blasting him through the caution tape and onto the sidewalk below.

Christian Markov glanced her way briefly before before launching himself at the strange man again. Who was this invader? Was he one of the back alley genetic evolutions they talked about on the news?

Christian didn’t let up, sending a barrage of punches into the man’s face and body faster than her eyes could track them.

Someone scooped her up and ran, leaping over the fountain railing as though it were a mere speed bump, rather than a three-foot vertical leap. Candace looked up into the face of Marissa Hayden, the sunlight shining a halo around her hair.

Transfixed by the sight, Candace barely registered it when they stopped and Marissa set her down beside an ambulance half a block away. Not wasting a moment, Marissa winked at her, then flew back up the street to help her teammate.

Someone wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and another pushed around in her hair at the back of her head.

“What’s your name, Miss?”

She blinked, only now seeing the paramedic in front of her.

“What?”

“Your name? You hit your head and we need to take you to the hospital. Can you give me a phone number to call?”

“Candace,” she replied, still staring back up the street. “Candace Bristol.”

“We have to get you out of here, sweetie. Can you stand?”

“I didn’t say thank you,” she whispered.

“What was that?”

“I…” She pinched her eyes shut. “My head hurts. I need to call my cousin. I was with him before…”

She winced as she pulled her phone from her pocket. Gabe was going to kill her for sneaking off.

And if he didn’t, she was sure her mother would.

Excerpt:

"Close your eyes," he said before opening the doors.
"What?"
"Just do it." He smiled reassuringly.
Lydia sighed and shut her eyes. Daniel pressed his thumb to the scanner and the large bay doors parted. At her back, he guided her forward by the shoulders until she was a few feet from the stairs. Then he stepped around her. He wanted to see her reaction.
"Okay, you can look."
Her dark eyes opened, then widened at the sight before her. "Can I go up?" she asked.
Daniel nodded. After seeing her panicked state earlier, he thought she could probably use a distraction. Lydia raced up the six steps to the edge of the tank. Three sleek, gray heads popped above the surface to greet her. Two others hung back, the meeker of the pod, waiting for the verdict from the more outgoing ones.
"This is Gracie, the mother hen of our resident dolphin pod. You can recognize her by the heart-shaped spot between her eyes."
Lydia's grin was a mile wide. "Hello, Gracie. Nice to meet you." She reached out and touched the nearest dolphin. It rose to meet her, answering her greeting with a click and a whistle.
"This is Dora, Gracie's oldest daughter. She has an indentation on the top of her dorsal fin due to a run in with a shark. We almost lost her that time. She's a bit too friendly for her own good."
"Fozi is the youngest of the pod, a male. He's smaller than the others, but twice as loud." Daniel stroked the top of the dolphin's melon as he swam by.
"Back there are Lucinda and Talulah, impossibly rare twin girls. In the case of dolphin twins, one of them is usually stillborn or dies soon after birth. Those two are fighters, and stick together like nothing I've seen, but they also shy away from strangers."
Lydia looked elated. "They're beautiful. I've been wanting to see them since I got here. I was starting to think they were avoiding me."
"Not at all," Daniel said. "At this time of year they spend more time out than in."
"I wish we had one of their tubes running through the lab," she said. "They'd be a welcome sight every now and again."
"I know what you mean. I'd love to have them in the Tech Center too." He laughed as Gracie nudged her way in for another one of Lydia's pats. "She likes you. They aren't always so welcoming."
"Have you been successful in teaching them hand signals?"
He nodded. "Absolutely. The twins were pretty stubborn about it, but even they know twenty or more different signs. Daniel made two pumping motions with his right index finger. As Lydia reached out to touch Dora, she was met with a light spray of water from her blowhole. Daniel couldn't help but laugh loudly as she gasped in shock.
"Very funny," she said, wiping saltwater off of her face.
Daniel tossed her a towel hanging from a rack on the wall. "Just wanted to prove a point." He winked.
"Mission accomplished," she said through the terrycloth. "Speaking of, didn't we come here for something?"
"Oh, right." Daniel removed the drive from his pocket. He hopped down the stairs and grabbed a stepladder. Placing it against the wall, he climbed up and stuck the drive inside a container on a high shelf.
"You don't think someone will find it there?" Lydia asked.
"Nah," he said, pushing the container to the back. "They only use this stuff once every other year for a SCUBA class. That happened last month so I think we're safe for awhile."
He mounted the stairs again and perched on the tank edge next to her. "How are you doing?"
"Better, thanks," she said, running her hand along Fozi's side. "I still have this sick feeling of violation, but it's getting better."
"Violation?"
She said nothing for a moment and was very quiet when she spoke again. "Since my family died, I haven't really felt comfortable anywhere. I've spent the last six years wanting nothing more than a place on the Endure. Coming here was like..." She stopped, swallowed, and began again. "Coming here was like coming home. To know that a place I care about so deeply, and my own lab at that, was abused for something so despicable... Yeah. Violation is the best word I can think of, but even that's an understatement."
Daniel reached out and laid a hand on her shoulder. He had been with the Endure since the beginning, but hadn't ever stopped to think if he considered this place as home. "Hey," he said, and she looked at him. "We'll get to the bottom of it. We'll fix it. Both of us."
She gave him a half-hearted smile. "I hope so, Daniel. I really do."

Synopsis:
"Tech genius Daniel Brewer isn't the only one with a romantic history. Already weighed down with the impossible problem of the Maven Initiative's plans for world domination and disaster, Dr. Lydia Ashley is finding it more and more difficult to keep things in balance. With an old flame reappearing and the schemes of a vindictive new rival thrown into the mix, her hopes for a life with Daniel may be on the brink of annihilation.

When Lydia's past is brought to light, one big secret could destroy everything."

Excerpt:
At 1045, there was a quiet rapping at her door. Lydia turned to see Dr. Corvis standing there, smiling politely. It was like watching a shark circling for an attack.
"Do you need something, Dr. Corvis?" Lydia said.
"Dr. Miller and I have worked out a possible sequence of alterations for one of the bacteria. Care to take a look?"
Sure she was walking into a trap, Lydia agreed anyway. One of the work stations had been arranged with four different devices: an electron microscope, a centrifuge, a chromosome splitter more compact than any she had seen before, and a rotating rack for petri dishes.
"Where did that come from?" She indicated the splitter. The display screen on the top showed a squirming object, pinned in place by the microlasers hovering above the sample tray. The controls hummed, waiting for their next command.
"My own personal stash," Nick said, coming up behind her. He was closer than she would've liked, but given the confines of the area there wasn't anything for it.
Lydia was stunned. "You own a chromosome splitter? How did you afford that?"
Nick shrugged. "It was a gift from Dr. DeBeauvoir."
"He's as generous as he is brilliant," Dr. Corvis gushed.
"Uh huh." Lydia gave her a sidelong glance. "So what have you been working on?"
Dr. Corvis answered for him. "Dr. Miller had some amazing insights on how to achieve the necessary virulence while maintaining its water-borne nature."
"You figured that out? That was the one thing I was dreading the most. I had hoped to find a workaround so I wouldn't mess with bacteria's environmental needs." What Lydia hadn't said was that she was terrified of creating some super bug that would become airborne and infect everyone on the station.
Nick moved over to the electron microscope and looked into the eyepiece, adjusting the focus. "If you take a look here, you can see the segment of the chromosome we're targeting."
He took a step back and she positioned herself in front of the device. "What am I looking at, exactly?"
Nick leaned against the table, closing the distance between them some. He was close enough that she caught the scent of sandalwood from the soap he'd used since she'd known him at Stanford. Focus, she reminded herself.
"These base pairs are responsible for virulence and environment adaptation. They're right beside one another so it can be difficult to separate them. You have to know exactly what you're doing or you could wind up with something really nasty."
Lydia looked up from the eyepiece and was startled to find his face less than a foot away from her own. "Good thing you're here to make sure we don't do that then, I guess." She sounded like an idiot. His proximity was flustering her.
"I was about to make the first cut with the splitter, but I wanted to show you one other thing first." Nick slid up to the microscope and she skittered away, as though he might burn her if they touched.
If he noticed, he didn't show it. He made another slight adjustment to the eyepiece. "Here." They traded places again. "This is the chromosome segment responsible for host selection. According to Anna, this was being altered to make it viable on multiple cellular types. What this basically means is that the cell wall degradation mechanism will be much more powerful and adapted to both rigid cells from plants and softer cells from animals. Really wicked stuff."
He was calling her Anna already? Damn. That woman worked fast. She pushed it aside. Lydia focused on what was important: a bacterium that could attack both flora and fauna. Something that strong could be devastating. "So it feeds off of organic material then, but doesn't discriminate in regards to the source? The environmental impact that will have..." Lydia rubbed her forehead. "Not only on human life. Anything within the release area will be obliterated."
"It's designed to only work for a certain period of time, within a certain range, remember," Dr. Corvis offered. Was she really defending the Maven Initiative? "The nanotags will ensure self-destruction of any infected phytoplankton outside that."
Lydia gaped at her. "And so that makes it okay?"
She shrugged. "To them, it was acceptable."
Unbelievable.
"Now I'll show you how to split the base pairs and graft the new ones," Nick said. Her spine went rigid as his hand touched the small of her back, ushering her towards the other piece of equipment. Fortunately, there wasn't far to go and the contact was brief.
Nick's hand grasped the controls, strong and steady. He talked her through the operation, explaining where the precise cuts needed to be made and directing the microlasers expertly.
"Did you do a lot of this with Dr. DeBeauvoir?" she asked.
"Not at first," he said, keeping his eyes on the screen. "But the last two years I was in the lab almost exclusively. I got a lot of practice with this thing. They were upgrading the equipment when I left so that's why I didn't feel guilty when they sent me away with this baby. We have spent many an hour together, Sheila and I."
She tried not to laugh, but couldn't help herself. "You named the splitter Sheila?"
"I thought about calling it Lydia, but that seemed inappropriate given the circumstances."
Her face burned as Dr. Corvis giggled. She actually giggled. Lydia was mortified, and Nick didn't so much as crack a smile. He couldn't be serious.
"There." He finished the cut and turned back to her. "Want to give it a try?"
Reining in her embarrassment, she nodded and stepped up to the controls. Nick loaded up another sample. He reached in front of her and punched in the autofocus on the sample camera. Another hit of sandalwood drifted up to her, scattering her thoughts.
"You're looking for the eighteenth base pair," he said, directing her where to shift the sample plate. "Stop."
She had to remind herself to breathe. With the way her entire body was shaking, she would probably wind up creating a highly virulent super bacterium.
"Good, now lock in the sample position."
Lydia flipped a switch and six microlasers pinned the sample in place.
"This is the tricky part," Nick said. "You have to have the right touch."
Every nerve in her body electrified as Nick slid behind her and wrapped his hands around hers. If she wasn't seven shades of scarlet before, she absolutely was now. This was not happening. No way was this professional by any stretch of the imagination.
"Slowly... slowly... now cut."
Her thumbs pressed down on the buttons to fire the incision lasers, and she was careful not to jerk away as soon as it was done.
"Perfect," he said, leaning over her shoulder to smile at her.
Right on cue, a throat cleared and she jumped, pushing away from both the machine and Dr. Miller.
Daniel was standing not ten feet away, looking none too happy about what he'd walked in on.
"We're dicing bacterial DNA," she blurted. "Dr. Miller was demonstrating how his equipment worked."
His eyebrow twitched and somewhere behind her, Dr. Corvis coughed to hide her laughter. Maybe her word choice had been a little questionable, but her brain was scrambled.
"Daniel Brewer, right?" Nick strode forward, hand extended. "I don't think we've been properly introduced. Nick Miller."
Daniel was not impressed.
Lydia hurried forward, cutting Nick off before he got any closer and all but pushed Daniel toward the door. "Time for lunch? Great! I'm famished. Let's go."
She was pretty sure Dr. Harpy was still laughing when they left the lab. Apparently, she'd decided on a new plan of attack.
