The SFR Brigade Showcase #3 - A Demon stalks the streets of the future #futuristic #UF

The end of the year is fast approaching, and with it my last release for 2014. For my December Showcase, I'm sharing a snippet of my futuristic urban fantasy - No Angel - and introducing my oh so charming incubus, Lucien (think fallen angels meet Bladerunner, lol).

EXCERPT | GOODREADS
Available from...Breathless Press
He stalked the streets of the city, the part that he had an unspoken claim on. Around him, those few humans venturing into the cold, wet weather walked with silver rain sticks in their raised hands, the buzz of invisible energy umbrellas keeping them dry. Beams of light from flying vehicles criss-crossed the clouded sky above. The odd blaring of collision warnings or irate drivers too impatient to wait their turn at the aerial stop signs broke the incessant hum of traffic. Towers and gothic arches in black marble and black glass surrounded him, glinting in the bright gleam of lurid neons. Mirrored panels reflected the 3D adverts that would spring up in front of commuters, like pranksters leaping out of hiding.
Lucien strode through them all as they tried to seduce him with the latest social drug, eating place, bar, or males and females available for company. Next, it offered things to increase his libido, at which he laughed, then cosmetic alterations to enhance his appearance. Lucien snorted. As an angel, he’d been beautiful. As a demon, he’d kept his looks, but his demonic nature had sharpened his high cheekbones and narrowed his face, turned his already dark skin a shade darker. He could class himself as drop dead gorgeous and appreciate the utter literal nature of the phrase.
When that failed, the ads tried targeting him with off-world travel as they followed him around. Lucien smiled. He already belonged to another world that most humans might have forgotten they could reach. Little did they know it would still be their final destination.
At last, even the holographic advertising left him alone. Contrary to what humanity might think, the supernatural beings of this world had adapted to technology, if somewhat more slowly than their mortal cousins. There were demons on the outer planets too, and new versions of Hell that linked them to the original to ensure the sinners still met the fate they deserved. Crossing space was no defense from supernatural beings who could cross dimensions as yet unknown and unexplored by the human race.
Brightness caught his eye. A woman, tall, artificially blonde but with a mouth and figure as lush as one of his succubi sisters. Her gaze met his for an instant, then fluttered away shyly. Lucien sidled to a stop alongside and turned to look at her fully. She hesitated, also halting. A blush colored her fair cheeks.
“I’m sorry, do I know you?” A hint of uncertainty in her voice. She hadn’t quite fallen under his thrall. Yet.
“In another life, perhaps. My name is Lucien.” He took her hand and kissed it, a custom so ancient it was now only seen in old movie archives. But every visible inch of her skin flushed a shade of rose in response, and she smiled. Her blue eyes glazed over as his full charm overpowered any resistance she might have put up. She was all his in that moment.
“Annalise,” she breathed.
“Beautiful Annalise,” he purred, and felt her shiver. “Take me home with you.”
Without another word, she did.

Tuesday Teaser - Return to Emerald City by @SofiaGreyAuthor & @AllysonLindt #giveaway

Excerpt from His Reboot Girl (Return to Emerald City):

The second I started to log in, it would register in the main datacenter, but that alone wouldn’t send up any red flags. If I fluffed the login, it’d lock me out of the core network, but what would Donny do then? That wasn’t a great idea.
“What do you want access to?” I asked.
“Your vault.” The words you moron were implied.
“Which part? It’s segmented. There are different logins for each area.”
“The wetware protocols.”
Could I remember the authentication sequence? I hadn’t even remembered my own name until I heard it. I flattened my palm over the reader, and extended my hand so all four fingerprints were read at once. The login screen appeared immediately, a winking cursor awaiting instructions.
Fuck. What was the format? I swallowed hard, and then gazed at the screen, hoping for inspiration. I hovered my fingers over the keypad, unsure what came first.
“Come on, you should know this like the back of your hand,” Donny said.
Was it my name first? Or the vault name? Or a passkey? I closed my eyes and tried to visualize how it looked. How it should look.
Nothing.
I pushed at the black hole in my memory, and winced at how painful it was. Beads of sweat broke out across my forehead. What was the fucking access protocol?
I know how to make it work.
What had I been thinking of?
“Get a move on, or there’s going to be more screaming.”
I scowled at Donny. “If I fuck this up just once, I’ll be locked out of the system.” I spoke through gritted teeth.
“Well you’d better get it right.”
Think, Scott. The wetware protocols were based on the simple premise of linking up the human brain to others in a bio-neural network. Information could be shared at the speed of light. Instructions sent and received as a single thought. I’d struggled with the response times, but had cracked that problem some time ago.
I swiped at my forehead. Think. Squeezing my eyes tight shut, I tried to blank out my thoughts. One name emerged from the darkness. Dorothy.

#Cover #Reveal - Meilin and the Challenger via @CateMasters #zombie #romance #futuristic

Meilin and The Challenger
Futuristic urban fantasy/fairy tale
73 pages
April 11, 2014 from
Musa Publishing: http://musapublishing.com/

Blurb
Meilin King has never believed in fairy tales. Happy ever afters might have happened in the old days—before zombies. But this is 2089. When her father promises riches to the one who can rid their city of zombies, Meilin and her sisters rush to develop a solution that won’t bankrupt Dad.
The war overseas left Will MacGregor disillusioned, but fighting zombies at home is a cause he can embrace. Meilin’s another. Tough but sweet, she might make him believe in life again, and maybe even love, if she doesn’t kick his ass first.
When zombies kidnap her family, Meilin must rescue them. But can she and Will save them from the worst fate of all?

Excerpt
A click sounded beside him. Meilin propped a rifle to her shoulder and sighted her aim toward the advancing zombies. “Let’s annihilate the party crashers, sisters.”
A lopsided smile quirked his lips. “Not all the party crashers, I hope.”
Her stance steady, she glanced over. “I might spare you.”
Oh hell, I’m in love. Gunfire erupted on either side, but he couldn’t tear his focus from her. Amazing, how she braced against the kick of the rifle—her slight frame absorbed it and she fired away. Like you should be doing.
As trained, he lifted the Uzi. Stunned, he could only watch as the girls split the zombies’ heads with one shot apiece, the most efficient kill he’d ever witnessed. The zombies at the front of the charge fell first. Those in the center scattered to either side. Hell, these women didn’t need his help. If only the soldiers in his platoon had been so deadly accurate.
Better at least try to be helpful. He let the bullets fly. Too bad the walking dead couldn’t run; soon they dropped to the forest floor with the others.
The tallest blonde held a strange set of binoculars to her face. “There, two more getting away.”
Hard to sight them in the dark. He swiveled one of the dance floor spotlights in their direction. Momentarily blinded, the walking dead stopped walking. Meilin and the tall blonde aimed, and their shots cracked the zombies’ heads in two.
Meilin tapped his shoulder. “Aim the light to three o’clock. I think I see a few more.”
She stood so close, he grew woozy. Cherry blossoms. He struggled to fight off her intoxicating scent. He did as she asked, but his acute awareness centered on her. Built the way he liked, petite but powerful. She moved with purpose and grace, surety and intense focus in every action. Like the others, she felled the three zombies with one shot each, in exactly the spot needed for the final kill: their heads. Oh yeah, a woman who knew what she wanted and went after it, a force to be reckoned with.
She rested the rifle butt against her hip. “What do you think, Lakshme? More hiding out there?”
The girl with almond eyes shrugged. “Probably.”
Yeah, most likely. Better make sure. “I’ll do a sweep and check.”
The tallest blonde winced. “By yourself?”
Lakshme smirked. “Aren’t we lucky? Superman’s here.”
Meilin’s gaze swept over him. “Oh, I thought he was the Green Hornet.”
The blonde’s lip curled. “Horn dog, more like.”
What the hell was their problem? “Hey, I’m only trying to help.”
“Good thing.” Lakshme’s voice turned breathy. “We’re helpless girls, after all.”
Oh, man. Great first impression. “No, I didn’t—”
Meilin raised her rifle and shot three times in quick succession. “Three more down. Now we need to find out how many we missed.”
A no-nonsense babe. Excellent.
The tall blonde jumped to the ground. “Pull up the truck so we can dump the bodies. Wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise for any latecomers.” She flashed a sardonic smile and headed for the nearest carcass.
One sister disappeared into the brush. An engine roared, and a delivery truck backed into the site, halted, and the doors flew open.
Once they’d loaded the last of the zombie bodies, Will blew out a breath. The tall blonde latched the door closed. How did they all still appear ready freshly showered and ready for a night of dancing? They had this routine down, to the last detail.
“What now?” he asked.
The tall blonde poked a finger into his chest. “Now you forget everything you saw here, and we won’t have to incinerate you with the rest of them.”
Forget? He glanced at Meilin. Not happening. “You might find me useful. And I want to learn more about your operation. It’s impressive. Mr. King’s looking to hire—”
The blonde grabbed his shirt, her grimace eye level with him. “Don’t ever mention him again.”
Not speak of their father? He studied Meilin for a clue.
She wrenched the blonde’s arm. “Back off, Zoe. He’s harmless.”
Zoe shoved Meilin, who stumbled backward and lost her balance.
Landing on her butt, she looked up at Will with sadness. “Sorry.”
His heart lurched. Hopefully, not sorry she met him. “For what?”
A hard thud to the back of his head came in answer. His knees hit the dance floor, and he toppled over.

No Angel - Excerpt and Links

Futuristic urban fantasy short

EXCERPT:

A new burning consumed his body. He wanted to reach out and hold her. Wrap his arms around her, and drown in her kiss. But even as he took one shaky step toward her, the light and goodness within her scorched him and he staggered back a step, one arm thrown up to shield himself.

"Lucien." Her voice washed over him like a sweetly scented summer breeze. He dared to drop his arm and look at her again.
"Miranda." Her name came out as a growl, and he cursed himself for it.
Her frown deepened. "Lucien, what's happened to you?" She took a step closer and he shied away. No matter how she'd come to him, welcomed him, her angelic powers could still be deadly. "Oh, my love, what have you become?"
My love. The words cut him as deeply as the priest's forgiveness. The pain stirred his resentment. She had been the cause of his fall. The reason for his torment. And now she was scolding him for it?
"What I am is what you helped turn me in to." He raised his head, glared at her. "What I am is because of you."
She shook her head. "Is that really what you think? That it's all my fault?" Tears glimmered in her eyes. "I've watched you for a long time now. Waiting for the right time to come to you. I've seen how your existence has come to trouble you more in the last decades. How the tasks set to you have crushed what remains of your soul."
Lucien snorted. "My soul? I lost that with my heart. And my wings."
"No. You didn't. You hate what you do. You sealed your heart in stone to protect yourself, but you can't bring yourself to fully give into the darkness, no matter what."
Lucien shuddered. "You're wrong."
"You know I'm not." She took another step toward him, and though he tried to back away he found himself trapped against the brick wall. She put up her hand, palm outward, as if to touch him. His breath stalled in his chest and his whole body might just as well have become stone. He couldn't move.

Praise for No Angel

"...deliciously dangerous incubus quick read..."

"The layered characterization that Pippa slowly peels back to show us the love story at the core of these characters is wonderfully done."

"Superficially, this is a funny, quirky story, but as always Pippa Jay’s stories have more depth that will keep you thinking about them long after the story ends."
