Meet the #Author: Everything Under the Sun by Jessica Redmerski #dystopia #postapoc #romance #giveaway

Please tell us a bit about yourself:
I’ve been writing *something* since I was very young and started writing novels and building fantasy worlds at the age of 12 or 13. Writing is, and always will be in my blood. I’ll be 42 this year in November, and I feel like I’m just getting started. I have so much to say, so many worlds to wrap my readers in, and many crazy, loving, fun, evil, spiteful, generous {INSERT A HUNDRED MORE PERSONALITY TYPES HERE} characters to introduce you all to. I also have 3 kids, all grown up now for the most part, and I’m proud they inherited their momma’s creative gene! One is a talented musician, and two are talented artists!
Tell us about EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN:
The story is about two people, starkly different from one another, forced to survive together in a dangerous world after the fall of civilization.
What inspired you to write this particular story?:
Daryl and Beth on the television show The Walking Dead - If Beth had been just a little older, a relationship between them, forced by survival and the post-apocalyptic world they lived in, would have been sweet. But because that could never happen, I made it my duty to tell the love story inspired by them, that grew in my heart.
Please share a favourite snippet from your book:
“Are you still angry?” I asked him.
“About what?”
“Giving the bread away to those people.”
He shook his head against the quilt.
“No, Thais, I’m not still angry.”
After a moment, he said, “Thais?”
“Mmm-hmm?”
“Don’t ask me to kiss you again.”
I paused, tensed. “Why not?” I was afraid of the answer.
We continued to look up at the stars. Behind us the horses whickered and their tails swished about. A light breeze combed through the trees, carrying the bitter and sweet scents of pine and honeysuckle with it.
Finally, Atticus answered, “Because whatever you want from me, Thais, I’d rather you just take it.”
I wanted to cry.
I smiled to myself instead.

Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:
Personality, name, and then appearance
Any tips for aspiring authors?:
Always, ALWAYS, write from the heart. I learned this the hard way: if you feel like you’re having to force a story, whether it’s because you’re on a deadline, or you want to write that next bestseller, and you’re forcing yourself to write what you THINK everybody is reading right now—don’t. Just put the laptop away and rethink your priorities. The truth is, it doesn’t matter what’s popular in the moment; it doesn’t matter if a million people are reading a vampire series; it doesn’t matter if half the bestsellers on Amazon’s list are romance books—don’t write ANYTHING that doesn’t come from your heart because the readers will know it. They can feel when a story was forced; they know when you didn’t put as much effort into it as you did that one book you wrote one year that you loved so much but it never saw the light of day. Just write that story you’ve been thinking about writing forever, the one you can’t get out of your head; write the one you think nobody is going to read because it’s not the sort of thing that’s popular right now. Because the thing is, it’s true whoever said: Nobody else will like it if you don’t.

Questions for fun:  What super-power would you choose?:
Flying! I’ve always been fearful of heights, and airplanes specifically, which has put a damper on my involvement in too many book signings. If I could just fly (myself, not on a plane), that would be awesome.
Coffee, tea or wine?:
Cold brew coffee all the way
What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!):
THE BRONZE HORSEMAN by Paullina Simons  Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!
Thank you for having me!

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

Excerpt:
As the sun set, it took with it the hope of a meal. Long shadows draped across the ground and my level of anxiety increased. All around us nocturnal life awakened, but I locked my jaw and marched forward, stumbling over ground that so desperately want to slow me down.
And then the woods turned completely dark. Too dark to travel further. I stopped and leaned against a tree. The bark clawed at my shoulder and an owl called from overhead. I wiped sweat from my brow and listened to my stomach growling. No food left. Water was gone. I realized if I allowed myself, if I gave myself permission, I could easily crumble apart like the leaves beneath my feet. I knew I had to hold myself together. I had made a promise to keep Ezra safe. As important a promise as I’d ever made.
“We need to stop, Ezra,” I whispered.
“How about there?” Ezra pointed to a dense group of bushes.
I was exhausted, goose-bumped, the weight of my pack made me list to one side. I nodded. It was as good a place as any. I ushered Ezra under the branches and followed her into the darkness. The ground was damp. Something rustled a few feet away and I jumped. We sat hunched under the branches together, staring at the leaves. I dug out the last bit of dried ration in my pack and offered it to Ezra. It was only a mouthful, gone in seconds, with no water to wash it down. But I could imagine how it tasted. How it felt to have a morsel filling the hollowness.

Instead, I fed off my worry which sat sour and thick in my stomach. I had never felt so incapable. In the compound, I was self-sufficient. I gathered our rations. I cleaned our clothes. I held a job at the garden and finished my assignments on time. Here…well, there was no control. In fact, I had no idea how to find water, how to gather food. Cowering under this shrub, I felt like a fish stranded on shore – completely out of my element, gasping for air – and I knew if I hadn’t been able to scrounge a morsel to eat today, what would day two look like? Day five?

Guest Post - Inspiration for Rising Tides by @katyhaye #YA #postapoc #giveaway @YABoundToursPR

Let’s eat a 100-year-old parsnip: Inspiration for the world of Rising Tides
The original idea for Rising Tides was triggered a piece about Scott’s Hut in the Antarctic, which has been left  for a century as he and his fellow explorers last used it. The link above tells you about Alan Gibbs who visited the hut and spotted a dried parsnip which had fallen out of a rusted tin, reconstituted itself in a puddle of chilly water and transpired to be perfectly edible – nearly 100 years after it had first been grown. There was another piece (I’ve lost the reference, unfortunately) about another explorer who brought back a tin of rhubarb left in Scott’s Hut and baked a perfectly edible pie from it.
The idea that food grown and prepared now could still be edible a century or more into the future set my imaginative cogs whirring – how would humans manage after a total collapse of the eco-system when this food was the only thing left: how might they agree to share (or not?).
I freely admit I’ve taken liberties – a large part of the durability of these foods must be due to the sub-zero temperatures they were also kept in. In the flooded world of City, however, nautilus men need to dive in order to salvage these tinned foods, which frigid water would make difficult to impossible. So I’ve used artistic licence to allow the tinned food to remain in tact, whether or not that would actually be the scientific case. Some foods would undoubtedly last better than others (acidic food such as tomatoes probably wouldn’t be a good choice after 100 years since they’d have reacted with the metal tins), so I have allowed that to be reflected in the choices my characters make – when they have a choice of what to eat.

Here’s a scene from the book where Cosimo dives in order to find food for himself and Libby:

The lurch of the boat was my only warning before Cosimo clambered back on board. There was a clatter as he tipped his finds onto the deck. Half a dozen tins covered in grey slime. “Breakfast, your Highness.” My hunger vanished. He leaned back over the side of the boat, washing the tins in the sea.

My stomach rumbled and I ventured to the cabin to see what delicacies he’d found.
Cosimo had chosen sweetcorn. The other open tins held pineapple, mashed peas and minced meat. I wished, as I did most times I set to cook a meal, that it was possible to know what was within the tins before we opened them. I guessed the Old Ones hadn’t imagined their labels might need to be waterproof.
The pineapple would taste of nothing more than the tin it had been encased in, so I took the minced meat from the ledge inside the cabin, found a fork and returned to the deck. I sat at the back of the boat, close enough to him to watch what he did with the boat’s controls without being so close he might get presumptuous ideas.

Tuesday Teaser - Spark Awakening by Kate Corcino #dystopia #postapoc #scifirom

I’m thrilled to be here with all of you and Pippa, and I’m so pleased to offer the very first glimpse of Spark Awakening, the sequel to Spark Rising. Here you see a bit of the new cover, as well as the opening of the book! The new entry in The Progenitor Saga will be released in May 2016!

This teaser is from the first chapter, and is from the point of view of our hero, Alex Reyes, the secret agent on a journey to his own kind of redemption. He and Lena have a long way to go…and it all starts here…

The boom of his gun discharging was followed by the sound of chips of stone falling to earth like spattering raindrops. It was a happy sound. Or maybe he enjoyed it because he was happy.
These happy moments more and more often fell on Alexs heart like a soft rain. They renewed him. They encouraged tender, soft things long hidden to unfurl and grow. They scared the shit out of him, not that hed ever let it show.
This moment was one of them. He stood to the side and traced the line of Lenas body as she stood, arms still extended and palms curled around his gun. More and more often this summer, hed found himself watching her, committing some part of herof them togetherto memory. There was never enough time for just the two of them.
She took a long, shaky breath that became a sound somewhere between uneasy and laughter. When she spoke, her voice was too loud. He guessed her ears still rang.
I did not expect to be able to see fire coming out the top of it.
Gunpowder and Dust. Alex reminded her. He chuckled, and his warm breath puffed back from her skin as he leaned in to kiss the back of her neck. Remind me again why Im out here in the sun teaching you to fire a gun instead of back in the cabin playing find my favorite freckle?
I dont know why youre out here. She carefully sighted down the barrel like hed taught her. But Im out here because I believe in reciprocity. I teach. You teach. She slid her index finger from along the side of the gun and curled it so just the pad of her finger and not the whole tip was touching the trigger.
Damn the woman learned fast.
The boom as his gun went off cracked against the canyon wall a half mile away and echoed back to them. Lena missed again, but she was a hell of a lot closer on her second shot. She turned her head to him with a cheeky grin. Well, reciprocity, and because Thomas said I couldnt.
He snorted, believing her. She turned away from him and sighted again. This time, she fired several shots in a row, took a breather, and finished the mag. Her last few shots caused bark to fly up and scatter from the big deadfall hed leaned against a pair of boulders.
She sighed in satisfaction and looked back. So why are you out here in the sun teaching me?
Because you asked. He flashed her a quick smirk and winked. And because Thomas said I shouldnt.
Clearly we both have issues with authority. She laughed, then her face became pensive. Whats his problem with me? Ever since we all got back, things have been…”
Alex shook his head. Its not you.
Lena snorted her disbelief. Alex couldnt blame her for doubting. He and Thomas had made a series of decisions without her that summerstarting with the decision at the Conclave to place the blame for a missing shipment of girls on her shoulders. Once theyd returned, shed finally confessed that shed overheard Fort Nevada men plotting to take her out. Alex had been raring to go hunt them out. Thomas had played it cool. Hed thought perhaps she was overreacting, or having an emotional response to the decisions theyd made without her at Conclave.
That was bullshit. Thomas was overwhelmed, but he wasnt willing to delegate the things that were kicking his ass right now. He was deflecting that frustration onto Lena.
Its not you. Weve reached critical mass at this pointstretched thin and on the cusp of achieving what weve dreamed of. But weve also got new problems, new players. I think its got him rattled. Its a lot to manage.
Hes justdismissed all of my concerns. You were there. You were mad, too.
She was right. Thomas had told her hed been working on finding the threat against her, but theyd found nothing and they needed the men investigating elsewhere. If she could find more evidence, hed draw them back again. It wasnt fair. And as Alex had expressed then, it wasnt smart, either.
Now Alex smiled down at her and stepped around to take the gun with one hand and stroke her cheek with the other. Hes overextended. But its not you.
A frown fluttered across her face, but his fingers on her skin had the desired effect. She smiled, willing to be soothed.
He dipped his head down and left a trail of soft kisses across her lips. This is our last day out hereby ourselvesand I leave in the morning for six months. Maybe we should head back to the cabin. I can think of ways to make these last hours more memorable.
How memorable?
Instead of answering, he pulled her tight against him in a one-armed embrace and stole her breath with a long, deep kiss. When he pulled back, he was satisfied to see the heated, dreamy look in her eyes that he craved.
The rolling crack of a rockfall came from behind them. Alex spun, releasing the mag, and removing a spare from his belt to smack it into the gun. He raised the weapon.
They waited, but there was just the slither of earth settling back into place off to the left. His eyes scanned for movement.
Lena laughed at Alexs automatic response. Its just an animala cougar or a wild dog.
Make me feel better. He pointed with his chin, eyes narrowed. Check.
Still laughing, Lena focused her attention on the other side of the rocky canyon wall. She abruptly stopped laughing.
Its a man. She automatically lowered her voice to a tense whisper. Moving away and heading toward the red rock and pines up the other side of the canyon.
Alex nodded, grabbed the empty magazine from the ground, and ran to the wall that separated them from whomever had been watching a moment before. He wasnt going to lose him. That meant sacrificing subtlety for speed.
He ignored the rocks that slid down behind him and crested the wall minutes later. Lena was right behind him and to his right. She silently pointed.
Their prey was still moving, heading away from what was left of the gravel road and directly into rougher country of tumbled boulders and steep canyons. Alex wasnt worried about losing the man. He had an advantage. He had Lena.
They cut across on the descent. At the bottom, Alex gestured her down the middle of the canyon with him. They were going to cut him off.
They ran down the canyon. When he judged they might be ahead of their watcher, he glanced back at Lena to confirm.
Her eyes became faraway as she reached for the Dust. Her brows drew down. A moment passed before she shook her head.
Hes gone. She swallowed and made a slow circle. Alex knew she was reaching, asking the Dust to show her where the man hid. Its not possible. But hes really gone.
Gone?
She raised one arm in the air. How could he be gone somewhere I cant see him?
He cant be. Hes not gone. Hes hiding.
Alex, he cant hide from the Dust.
Unless hes using the Dust.
