Happy 5th Book-iversary to Hallow's Eve #paranormal #romance

I've been taking an extended break from blogging and writing, but as the autumn term has started and I dragged out my Halloween profile pics, it reminded me of my seasonal short story. Just in time to mark its fifth birthday! Five years old today - doesn't feel like it at all. Maybe pull up a pumpkin and bask in the glow of that glorious autumnal cover. 😊

When love comes home...

Twelve months ago, Hal's world crashed and burned, taking the love of his life with it. He's waited all year for that one special night when the souls of the departed come home, hoping his candle will summon back one in particular to heal his broken heart. But the forbidden knowledge he's learned could call something far worse, and put more than his own soul at risk...

A Paranormal Romance short story, released 8th October 2014. Available in all digital formats from:
 AmazonB&NKoboiBooks, and Smashwords. Read a preview and the reviews at Goodreads.

Spiced Elderberry and Brownies

I have a fondness for fruit cordials, especially to the Bottle Green Spiced Berry one. To me, commercial squash is a vile thing, yuck. But as with most things I get attached to, the spiced berry one has become harder and harder to find, and just recently disappeared completely. Every year I have resolved to make my own using elderberries, since we have a tree at the bottom of our garden. This year I finally got around to making some, so while the berries are available I thought I'd share my recipe. Well, I say 'mine'. After combining various recipes from the internet, this recipe is an amalgamation. It's also something I used in a short story based around Halloween and something I used as a blog post. In Hallow's Eve, my hero Hal has a magical housekeeper - a brownie called Hodge - who's a master at making spice elderberry cordial.

Hodge

Hodge's Spiced Elderberry Cordial

1.5 lbs elderberries (or however many you have!)
Demarara sugar
Cinnamon Sticks
Cloves
Lemon

Method:
Remove the elderberries from the stalks using a fork. Place the elderberries in a saucepan with just enough water to cover them, then bring to a simmer and allow them to cook for 20 minutes.  The berries will soften and the liquid will be dark red.

Strain out the berries with a sieve or use muslin cloth (crush with a fork or squeeze the cloth to extract as much juice as possible), keeping the juice (be careful as this stains!)

Measure the amount of juice.

Pour the juice back into the empty saucepan. For every 2 cups of juice, add 2 cups of demarara sugar, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 cloves and the juice from ½ a lemon.

Bring the mixture to a boil and maintain for 15 minutes, stirring regularly to ensure all the sugar dissolves.  Remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves. Let the mixture cool while you prepare the bottles.

If you’re planning/able to store the cordial in the fridge, simply clean your storage bottles with hot, soapy water and then rinse in boiling water. Once the bottles are cool, fill with cordial, stopper and store.

Serve diluted with hot water as a warming winter drink and a boost during illness. In folklore elderberries were used as a protection against influenza, and research has now established that elderberry extract is a clinically proven treatment against flu. You could also add the same spices used in mulled wine for a more Christmassy variation.
~~~
And so this is also the perfect excuse to share the story with you too, since October is just around the corner. Something to read while trying your first cup of cordial maybe. ;)
When Love Comes Home - Romancing #Halloween Blog Hop #paranormal #giveaway
Last year I wrote my first ever paranormal story, and a Halloween-themed one at that. Much like my hero, I've had to wait a whole year to reveal it! But now Halloween is upon us and I can share. :) Inspired by the old meaning of All Hallows' Eve, a couple of stock images from dreamstime.com, and a love for Brian Froud fairies, I came up with Hallow's Eve.
Excerpt:
The thud and chink of beer bottles and glasses on the bar announced Dan’s return.
“So?”
Hal shook his head. “Not tonight.”
“Oh, c’mon, man. Just one beer.”
Hal dropped his gaze to the glass he was still drying with a vehemence it didn’t deserve, avoiding his friend’s pleading stare. “Thanks, but I’m not in the mood.”
Dan made an exasperated sound. “Look, I know it’s nearly a year—”
Pain lanced into his chest. “Stop.” He looked up.
A frown creasing his tanned face, Dan glared back, but he shut up.
Hal sucked in a breath. He didn’t want to fight with Dan over this. The guy had stopped Hal’s life completely falling apart after last Halloween. “I know what you’re trying to do,” he murmured, and relief flickered in Dan’s brown eyes. “But I’m not ready to let it go.”
“I’m not saying you should, man. But how about getting back into some social interaction? You can’t spend the rest of your life as a recluse.”
“I won’t.” Hal smiled. Dan had no idea.
“Then come out for a beer.”
“Another time.”
“Tomorrow then. I know you’ve got the Halloween shift off.”
Hal put down the glass he’d abused. “I’m busy.”
“Oh, yeah? Doing what? Trick or treating?” Dan scoffed. “What is it with you and Halloween? You never struck me as religious enough to find it offensive, but you don’t go out and have any fun either. So how come you always take the night off?”
Hal looked around the bar at all the tawdry holiday decorations, and debated how to answer. Maybe Dan thought he was a closet Christian or something. The truth would shock the hell out of him. Especially with what Hal had planned this year. “My...family don’t see it as something to joke about.”
“Oh. Strict Catholic or something?”
“Something like that.” Hal smiled at the thought of his parents taking Holy Communion. But let Dan interpret it any way he liked.
