#SFRB Summer Blog Hop: Other Worlds - The Travellers Universe #scifi #romance

Welcome to Other Worlds at my stop on the SFR Brigade Summer Blog Hop.

My name is Melanda Troi from Blue Moon Holiday Tours, and I'd like to show you a few of the worlds that make up some of the wonderful destinations in Pippa Jay's Travellers Universe. These three all feature in Keir: Book One of the Redemption series, a chapter of which is featured in Portals: Volume Three (a free SFR sampler).

Are you a fan of the simple life? Romantic medieval castles and knights in shining armour? Then the city of Adalucien on Salusan might well be the location for you. Visit the palace, with its finely painted interior walls, rich tapestries, and heavily armed fortifications. Or take a horse ride into the surrounding woodlands to see the rustic villages and friendly peasantry who farm the land. You might even have time to visit their rugged coastline or take in the pagan Neolithic sites.

Too backward? Then perhaps something more...advanced. A high tech, super secret scientific base on the edge of the galaxy perhaps? You're guaranteed the very best and latest medical treatment (providing they can work out what species you are), and of course all the convenience, comfort and entertainment that technology can provide.

Perhaps a little too stark and clinical? Well, then maybe the tropical planet of Metraxi with it's mostly temperate climate, clusters of small, secluded and sandy beaches, excellent seafood and friendly inhabitants is the perfect destination for you! Well, mostly friendly.

And if those can't tempt you, maybe the hero of the series can...

April Fools for Love - What my Characters do For Love #scifi #romance

Welcome to the April Fools for Love blog hop, sponsored by the SFR Station. In trying to come up for a post for the event, I thought about some of the foolish things my characters have done for the one they love. For instance:

In Tethered, my succubus-like heroine Tyree went against the strict, inflexible coda of her entire species by falling in love with a mere human. In return he risked war with a race determined and capable of wiping out everyone else.

In Keir, my tortured, tattooed hero fell over begging the heroine to stop crying. She offered him a place to call home despite the danger he posed and the advice of her friends against it.

The SFR Brigade Presents #1 - Imprint #scifi #romance #excerpt

This is my first snippet for the SFR Brigade Presents. I know - what a slacker?! Lol. Anyway, I present an excerpt taken from my short story Imprint, part of the Tales from the SFR Brigade - a free scifi romance anthology. Having been rescued from a rather nasty fate by Deluvian Marshall Tevik who'd been pursuing her, my thief Jiona has woken up in what might seem a compromising situation at first assessment...

“Care to explain why I’m half-naked in your bed?”

Tevik quirked an eyebrow and perched beside her on the edge of the mattress, still keeping out of reach. “My bed, because there was nowhere else to put you. And as for your clothing…” He had the grace to look sheepish. “Strip search. After that trick in the vaults with the knife…” With one hand he gestured to a long, dark bruise over his ribs that matched those on the opposite side from where she’d kicked him. She flinched. “I couldn’t be sure what else you might have tucked away.”

“Bet you enjoyed searching me.”

A faint blush colored his cheeks. “I did what I had to do, for my own safety as much as yours. I didn’t want any booby traps going off in your outfit. You are known for them.”

She smirked. “Thought I might have a weapon tucked away in my panties?”

His blush deepened. Her panties had been little more than a strand of lace. Less restrictive, but certainly no cover for a weapon. Not even a very small one.

“With you, anything is possible.”

Jiona laughed. “Ah, now there’s a reputation I can be proud of!”

Gethyon - #SFRGalaxyAwards winner!

Some of you may (or may not) know that I'm one of the admins for a fantastic group called the Science Fiction Romance Brigade, a dedicated group of authors, readers and publishing professionals committed to promoting the genre of SFR. As part of that, this January saw the 2nd Annual SFR Galaxy Awards, and while I didn't expect to win anything (it's not a contest you can enter since the judges choose from their personal favourite reads over the previous year), I was committed to posting the results to our fanpage on Facebook (psst, check it out HERE. We feature giveaways, new releases, freebies, news, contests, and a fair bit of SF/SFR humour and cuteness!). On Saturday I duly shared a link from Charlee Allden of Smart Girls love Scifi announcing the upcoming results...and promptly forgot about them. D'oh! Bad admin! But weekends are family time and I'm not supposed to be online at all.. Not much of an excuse, but it's all I have. >.<

So I was reminded about the event in a rather surprising way - a message on Twitter from fellow Brigader Veronica Scott congratulating me on my win. Whut?! Yep. My YA SciFi Gethyon had been awarded Most Awesome Psychic Talent. Woot! After a bit of flailing and some frantic sharing of results to the fanpage, I sat back to enjoy my win and change my Twitter profile. With Keir garnering a Best May To September Romance last year, I can now call myself a double SFR Galaxy Award winner. Woo hoo!

The great thing about the SFR Galaxy Awards is there are no fixed categories, and no way to enter. The judges just pick their stand out read (or sometimes film) of the year and chose their own award title. I love the novelty of the idea (and not just because I've won a couple). It can give you a really intriguing insight into why certain books stuck in a reader's mind, and a bit different from getting a review.

I was also flattered to get a mention as editor for the Amazon Kindle store version of Tales from the SFR Brigade on the anthology website HERE. I spent the end of 2013 fixing a few formatting issues and uploading Tales to Amazon and ARe. I also created a print edition purely for giveaways (you can enter to win an ultra-rare, cannot-be-bought print edition HERE) with a huge amount of help on the wrap around cover from Misa Buckley.

Both have made for a very satisfactory wrap up for 2013, despite issues throughout January. Kudos to the other SFR Galaxy Award winners, including a double for Cathy Pegau, and wins for Misa Buckley, Veronica Scott, Rebecca Royce, Kyndra Hatch and Sonya Clark. Congrats!

A New Venue (for a not so new story)

I have to say, 2014 has started with a bang...and not in a good way. Between exploding and dying technology, starting with the loss of my phone before Christmas and ending with my machine machine coming to a noisy end on New Year's Day, it's been an expensive start. And a mixed one on the publishing side too. Some of you may (or may not) have noticed that my debut scifi romance novel Keir has now vanished from all retail sites (except for possibly the print version on B&N). If not, you might have heard the wailing on Facebook and/or Twitter about it. I'm not going into details about that now. Suffice to say, I have no idea how long Keir will be unavailable at this moment in time. No, I'm not happy about it. There are just some things over which I have no control.

BUT, on the plus side and thanks to a crash course in advanced formatting and uploading to retail sites while helping with the SFR Brigade anthology over the autumn, I have had one bonus. Yesterday I uploaded an updated version of my scifi romance short Terms & Conditions Apply to All Romance Ebooks. And to celebrate this small but significant step for me, I've reduced the price by a third to $1.01 until the 23rd of January. You can pick it up HERE in pdf, mobi (Kindle) or epub (Nook/Kobo) formats. Or gift it to a friend (one of the things I love about ARe!). Tales from the SFR Brigade - Anthology Update! #SFRBAntho #scifirom #sfrb

So this morning I got an exciting update about the Tales from the SFR Brigade - an upcoming #FREE science fiction romance collection by seven stellar authors...and me. Lol. First up, there's been a slight change to the cover. Regretfully one of the original nine authors has withdrawn their story, and I'm sorry to see them leave. However, we now have the story order and the back of book blurb for the anthology. Here goes! *deep breath*

The SFR Brigade 2nd Midsummer Blog Hop - Pippa's Post

Excerpt -

Her manta ray-shaped flitter ship sat, in camouflage mode, nearby. The craft shimmered into a reality of silver and black at her touch, gleaming in the hazy sunlight. Jiona slipped inside, harnessed herself into the pilot’s seat, and fired up the engines. As soon as it left the ground, she gunned the engines and plummeted over the edge of the TransGalactic Bank’s three hundred story tower into the airborne tumult of the traffic below.

As she dived into the busy lanes of Chupalla, sirens blared. Jiona dodged oncoming vehicles with ease, laughing. The criss-crossing exhaust trails and energy signals would throw any pursuer off her track, and few law enforcers would be suicidal enough to try following her. Still smiling, she dropped through the last lane and into the sea of fuel fumes clouding the lower levels of the city, and headed for her base. Only the smallest sliver of guilt tightened her chest as she thought of the handsome man she’d left lying under a ticking bomb.

I've borrowed the video from the Fifth Element as I see 'the busy lanes of Chupalla' something like the traffic in Korben's city. The excerpt above is taken from my short story Imprint - part of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade's first and FREE anthology.

World building is my favourite part of writing - not just the description of a city or a planet, but the culture and people too. Whether it's completely alien, or whether it's a far future human society and world, or perhaps one that's regressed or still developing. I've had everything from a medieval culture with torturous similarities to the Spanish Inquisition, to a high tech hidden scientific base. A tropical paradise inhabited by a race of intelligent saurians to a decopunk city on an alternative Earth. I love them all. While my feet may be firmly fixed in my hometown of Colchester, I wander the rest of the universe in my head. Here's another.

Excerpt -

Once more he found himself somewhere strangely other. An alien planet. A fierce thrill flowed through him, and he drew a long breath. It was early evening on this world, and humidly warm, as Quin had warned him. The blue of the sky was streaked with the colors of sunset, the red-gold sun sinking behind them, throwing long shadows. They stood before a building that put the palace of Adalucien to shame with its splendor, twisting up into the sky and reminding him of the convoluted interior of a tall cone shell, broken open to reveal the chambers inside.

It had a fluid, organic shape to it, as though it had been grown rather than built. Made of a pale, marbled orange material and shot through with threads of different colors–pinks and mauves, greens and blues–it looked as though it were flaming in the scarlet light of the evening sky. There was no regularity to its structure. Numerous pillars of varying thicknesses seemed to have sprung up like trees wherever they had felt they were needed, curving into broad ribs to support the ceilings.

It was hard to be sure with such an asymmetrical construction but Keir estimated it to be perhaps twenty stories upward, soaring in ever-tapering tiers into the clouds. Terracing curled around the outside of each level, aerial walkways lit by tiny blue-white stars strung like beads. He could see people walking along them and hoped they would not have to travel quite so high.

#Science #Fiction #Fantasy Saturday #62

Hello! *waves* Welcome back to another round of #sffsat snippets. Last week we left my young hero all disorientated and slumped in an Underway...and I'm afraid that's exactly where he's going to stay. Heh heh! Mean, I know. Instead, I want to share a snippet from my scifi romance short story Imprint, due to be part of the Tales from the SFR Brigade - a FREE anthology of science fiction romance stories, including one by Linnea Sinclair (squeee!) - that should be releasing at midsummer. I'm so excited to be part of this project and honoured to be with such a bunch of talented authors!

Anyhow, we are meeting my 'heroine' Jiona as she makes her escape from a bank heist...
