A Scifi Adventure Novel
|
Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.
Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves--a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the return of Tarquin Secker, the mother who abandoned him, and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.
When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it'll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It'll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.
A science fiction adventure novel previously published 3rd June, 2013 by BURST (Champagne Books), and part of the Travellers Universe. A 2014 SFR Galaxy Award winner for Most Awesome Psychic Talent, and a 2015 EPIC eBook Awards finalist in the SF category. Also now includes the SF short story The Bones of the Sea. Gethyon
A Scifi Adventure Novel
|
They reached the wide archway that led from
the vast tower foyer into one of the main thoroughfares of Penrith complex.
Gethyon leaned against the wall and passed Kauri to Sky, both of whom
protested. “Just for a moment,” he assured them, sucking in deep breaths. He
stared down at his scarred palm, trying to dredge up some power. “I don’t think
I can open a gateway here.”
Sky’s white skin meant he was incapable of
turning any paler, but the crystalline eyes widened. “Then where?”
Gethyon ran through their options. There
was no psi-energy source here that he could use, not like on Lyagnius. The only
alternative would be to reopen one of his old gateways, where the barrier was
already broken. It was the method Quin used: her talent didn’t extend to
opening new gateways as he could.
“We need to go back to Lyagnius.”
Sky shifted Kauri as she squealed in his
ear, overriding even the endless sirens and the scream of the approaching
storm. “Then we’ll have to run.”
The walls shook as they ran, the ground
trembling underfoot. Kauri screamed louder, and the sound ripped through his
head until they ducked into the sub-city. Here, the shrieking of the Siah-dhu
was muted, an eerie howl on the edge of hearing. They scurried through the
tunnel until they reached the last gateway Gethyon had made.
“Here,” he announced weakly as Sky made to
run onward. The haemovore stopped and waited. Gethyon lifted his hand, reached
for gateway…and felt nothing.
Panic rose in black, chilling waves. Kauri
wailed, her voice a blade through his skull.
Focus! He closed his eyes, clenched his fists, and tried to seal his mind
against her cries, against the banshee call of the Siah-dhu as the darkness of
it seeped into him, into every corner of his mind. It smothered all light,
every thread of power within him. He dug his nails into his palms, used the
pain to fuel his anger, to spark the flames deep in his soul.
Silver and blue flickers answered, small
and fleeting. He plowed his grief and fury into them, the sharpness of his loss
and the blind rage of his hatred for Jinx. The energy flared into life, so
furiously that his knees buckled at the wildness of it. Gethyon gasped. It
wasn’t the same as before. This was the raw power that had been part of his
awakening talent as a child, but summoned by force, not a frenzied release
spurred by panic. It roared through his veins, fire and ice, splinters and
flame that melded and scorched along his nerves. He felt as though his skin would
peel back and char at the ferocity of it, his blood vaporize, his bones melt.
With a scream, he opened his eyes, and blue fire flared across his vision as he
raised his palm and sent the full force of it outward. Azure lightning surged
into the gateway, shattered the seal, and blew it open.
“Go,” he commanded, and Sky dived through
with Kauri screeching in his arms.
A cold wind blasted his back, and Gethyon
turned his head, glancing over his left shoulder. Darkness seethed into the
tunnel behind, a billowing, writhing mass of shadow tinged with sullen red and
lurid purple in his heightened vision.
He couldn’t move. His feet seemed pinned to
the floor, his muscles locked into rigid immobility. The Siah-dhu howled at
him, their voice leaching all will and power from him. Despite the sparks of
energy within him, the darkness writhed through his gut, gnawing with jagged
teeth as it twisted though his mind. It was hunger magnified a thousand times,
as if the vacuum of space had opened inside him. He fell to his knees.
Gethyon.
Not quite a voice, not quite any sound he’d ever
heard, the Siah-dhu called his name. The roiling mass drew closer. Ice blasted
over him and stole all the breath and warmth from him, sucking the life out of
him.
“No.” The single word snatched him back
from the edge. He hadn’t come so far or lost so much to surrender.
As the Siah-dhu pulsed toward him, intent
on his consumption, he forced himself up again and turned his back on the
shadows. It was the hardest thing he’d ever done, to resist that pull into
oblivion. The edges of the black cloud twined around him, incorporeal fingers
striving to grasp him, seething forward to swallow him…
The world disappeared.

Another Milestone on the Publishing Path #amwriting #ampublishing
Today marks another milestone in my publishing career. Four years and nearly one month after my debut novel was first released, I no longer have a publisher. My last contract ended yesterday. I am now fully self published, for the time being at least.
Because it doesn't mean I'll never submit to another publisher. I'm still keeping that as an option if I see a submission call I like. I'm happy to do both. In truth, if it wasn't for losing Breathless Press last year, I'd still be happily contracting longer works while self publishing my short stories. But alas, that was not to be.
So what happens now? Well, Gethyon has been in edits for the last few months (along with several other pieces) and I already have a new cover bookmarked. It's having a complete revamp. I had hoped to be able to re-release as soon as the contract ended, but real life and too many other projects have held me up. I am hoping to have it back out in ebook and finally print in time for me to take copies to BristolCon at the end of October this year.

EPIC news announcement
I have an addiction to shiny things, and that includes awards. Two of my top ambitions as an author are a PRISM award and an EPIC. And yesterday I thought I'd missed out on the EPIC again after seeing someone tweet they were a finalist while my inbox remained sadly devoid of any notification. Ah well. Another year, another book, I thought.
But this morning I did a random check of my Spam folder, and sitting there was a message from the eBook Judge Coordinator, subject line EPIC's eBook Awards Finalist! Woo hoo! My YA SF Gethyon - already a SFR Galaxy award winner at the start of this year - is one of four finalists in their science fiction category. What an awesome start to the day! And I had shiny things.
Aren't they pretty?! Of course, there's no telling if I'll actually be the winner - I have to wait until mid-March to know that - but just being a finalist has made me one very happy author. You can check out my fellow finalists at the EPIC website HERE.

An Out-of-this-world Summer Summer
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Sorry, I just couldn't resist that intro! Hi, I'm Pippa Jay, author of scifi and the supernatural with a romantic soul. I do have stories set on Earth, but mostly I write SF, so summers take place on alien worlds where the seasons and the setting may not be anything like we experience here. For one of my young heroes, a summer party may not seem so out-of-this-world at first glance. But then, the party has only just begun...
Merion Bay stretched its dunes out beneath the shadow
of limestone cliffs. The golden sands had softened to silver by dusk under the
fierce white of Terris’s large full moon. Groups of youngsters clustered around
a handful of fires as they laughed and chattered over the rushing of the waves.
Two music players fought for dominance in a rhythmic battle, but no one seemed
to care. No one had drunk enough alcohol to feel compelled to dance, although a
handful were already skinny-dipping in the sea and shrieking at the chill.
Gethyon sat alone on the edge and stared into the
heart of the fire, a bottle of cheap grade alcohol in hand. The acid taste of
it churned his stomach but he still took the odd gulp from it for appearance’s
sake.
“Hello there.” The bright voice snapped Gethyon from
his brooding, and he glanced up. A girl with silver skin and black tiger-stripe
markings smiled down at him, her crop of red hair almost blood-colored in the
twilight.
He lifted a hand in silent greeting.
“You’re Gethyon, aren’t you? Gethyon Rees?” Despite
the blandness of his welcome, she hunkered down into the sand, wiggling her
backside in an effort to get comfy and with a crooked grin on her lips. A sliver
of unease coursed down his spine at her expression. It reminded him all too
closely of another face, one with hair a paler shade of auburn and sapphire
eyes. He nodded confirmation.
“I’m Jinxuri Chei-har of the Veen,” she said.
This time Gethyon couldn’t restrain a smile. “That’s
some name.”
The girl shrugged. “I didn’t choose it. But you can
call me Jinx if you like.” At that she thrust out a hand toward him, and after
a moment he took it. Sudden pain splintered through his arm into his chest, and
he yanked his hand free to massage the feeling away. He stared at Jinx, but she
seemed unperturbed as she continued to grin at him.
“Are you a friend of Dephon’s?” he asked, with a trace
of suspicion. Was this something his old rival had set up to keep him occupied?
“Not really. I heard there was a party so I stopped
by.”
“You’re a gate-crasher?”
Jinx leaned forward and whispered in conspiratorial
tones, “Not going to give me away, are you?”
Gethyon shook his head. Why should he care? It wasn’t
his party.
She leaned back and eyed him carefully. “You don’t
seem very happy. Aren’t you enjoying yourself?”
Gethyon shrugged.
“Not your kind of thing, huh? I hear you’re a bit of a
genius with technology.”
“Who told you that?”
“Oh, I hear things. I’m good at it.” She smiled. “You
live with Professor Rees, don’t you? Heard a lot about him. Well-respected man.
Your grandfather, yes?”
“Yes.”
“What about your parents, what do they do?”
He stiffened and drew back. “Why do you want to know
about my parents?”
Jinx held up her hands. “I’m just trying to make
conversation.”
Gethyon mentally berated himself for his suspicions.
Living with a grandparent was going to make new people curious. After all, it
wasn’t the norm. “My father was killed in an explosion. My mother… travels. A
lot.”
“I’m sorry about your father. That’s kinda harsh. But
your mother sounds fun! Don’t you get to go with her?”
“No.”
Jinx gave him a sympathetic look. “Bad choice of
subject?”
“Yes.”
She chuckled. “You’re really making me work this
conversation, Geth. What would you like to talk about?”
“Where are you from?”
She paused as if she hadn’t expected such a question.
“No one place,” she murmured. “I travel a lot too.”
Gethyon opened his mouth to ask more, but sudden alarm
blazed across his mind. He scrambled to his feet.
“What’s wrong?” Jinx asked...

Gethyon - #SFRGalaxyAwards winner!
Some of you may (or may not) know that I'm one of the admins for a fantastic group called the Science Fiction Romance Brigade, a dedicated group of authors, readers and publishing professionals committed to promoting the genre of SFR. As part of that, this January saw the 2nd Annual SFR Galaxy Awards, and while I didn't expect to win anything (it's not a contest you can enter since the judges choose from their personal favourite reads over the previous year), I was committed to posting the results to our fanpage on Facebook (psst, check it out HERE. We feature giveaways, new releases, freebies, news, contests, and a fair bit of SF/SFR humour and cuteness!). On Saturday I duly shared a link from Charlee Allden of Smart Girls love Scifi announcing the upcoming results...and promptly forgot about them. D'oh! Bad admin! But weekends are family time and I'm not supposed to be online at all.. Not much of an excuse, but it's all I have. >.<
So I was reminded about the event in a rather surprising way - a message on Twitter from fellow Brigader Veronica Scott congratulating me on my win. Whut?! Yep. My YA SciFi Gethyon had been awarded Most Awesome Psychic Talent. Woot! After a bit of flailing and some frantic sharing of results to the fanpage, I sat back to enjoy my win and change my Twitter profile. With Keir garnering a Best May To September Romance last year, I can now call myself a double SFR Galaxy Award winner. Woo hoo!

The great thing about the SFR Galaxy Awards is there are no fixed categories, and no way to enter. The judges just pick their stand out read (or sometimes film) of the year and chose their own award title. I love the novelty of the idea (and not just because I've won a couple). It can give you a really intriguing insight into why certain books stuck in a reader's mind, and a bit different from getting a review.
If you'd like to know more about the awards, the winners and the judges, you should check out the website HERE.

I was also flattered to get a mention as editor for the Amazon Kindle store version of Tales from the SFR Brigade on the anthology website HERE. I spent the end of 2013 fixing a few formatting issues and uploading Tales to Amazon and ARe. I also created a print edition purely for giveaways (you can enter to win an ultra-rare, cannot-be-bought print edition HERE) with a huge amount of help on the wrap around cover from Misa Buckley.
Both have made for a very satisfactory wrap up for 2013, despite issues throughout January. Kudos to the other SFR Galaxy Award winners, including a double for Cathy Pegau, and wins for Misa Buckley, Veronica Scott, Rebecca Royce, Kyndra Hatch and Sonya Clark. Congrats!

Gethyon on Sale @CoffeeTimeRoman #YA #scifi
As my #YA #SciFi #adventure Gethyon is discounted to $1.49 @CoffeeTimeRoman HERE I thought I'd share an excerpt today.
Take me away from here. He stared deep into the image, his longing to be out there burning in his chest. Take me far away.
Something within him stirred, forcing him to focus deep inside the image. Warmth flowed from his chest, through his arms and into the crystal. Suddenly, the image opened and surrounded him; the room transformed into the dark void of open space, the stars orbiting him in slow rotation, a supernova within the grasp of his free hand.
Gethyon gasped in shock and dropped the CHI device; the illusion vanished, leaving the inactive crystal gleaming at his feet. He stared at it, expecting the images to leap from the crystal again and surround him. Tentatively, he reached down for the gem and his fingers closed around it. He lifted it to his face, gazing intently into the faceted prism, turning it this way and that as if it would suddenly reveal its secret. When nothing happened, he held it at arm’s length and activated it a second time. Again, the picture rose from the CHI device and hovered above it, nothing more than a simple hologram. Not understanding the strange sensation that seemed to spill from him into the heart of the imager, he allowed it to happen again. The view expanded and enfolded him in deepest, blackest space and sparkling stars. A cloud of infinitesimal space debris drifted across his eyes like wisps of cloud, and he pushed the fingers of his free hand into it, watching as the particles dispersed around his fingers.

Marveling at the sudden magic that had brought the galaxy’s image to life, he permitted more of the energy to surge into the CHI device, forcing it when it threatened to trickle to a halt. The image expanded farther, beyond the confines of his room and out into the landscape. Something within him seemed to unlock, and glittering threads of crystal fire shot through space, a long twisting corridor stretching out to infinity. Gethyon stood gasping on the threshold, dizzy with power and exhilaration, waiting to fall into the passageway.
Sudden alarm shot through him in an icy stream; he turned, fear stinging his nerves and fiery agony pulsing in his mind. From behind him darkness deeper than space, an antithesis of light, life and warmth, billowed into his vision, swamping and consuming all before it. He tried to scream, but the sound locked in his throat, leaving him silent and helpless. He tried to release the CHI device, to banish the image and the darkness back into the gem, but a paralysis claimed him. The blackness swelled. Amorphous fingers reached for him across the millennia, seeking to claim him. Power bled from him as the darkness drained his energy, sucked the life from him.
Pain exploded in his hand to the sound of splintering, and the vision shattered. Gethyon stood frozen. Shards of the CHI device fell from a hand dripping in crimson. He screamed as the darkness swallowed him.

Why hello there! Yes, I've been gone a long time - I've had soooo many projects to work on, I just haven't had time for anything else. But I'm baaack! Miss me? :P
This week I'm sharing a snippet from my #YA #scifi Gethyon. As part of Anit-Bullying Month, I'll be donating my November royalties to the UK charity Childline. Why Gethyon? Because my character is also bullied, so it seemed appropriate. Here, Gethyon and his 'friends' have been running across the grasslands, and as usual he's got left behind...
The others had come to a stop a short distance ahead and grouped together around Dephon. By the time he reached them, the dark-haired boy had pulled a bag of small, multicolored spheres from his pocket and divided them amongst his friends with generous abandon. Gethyon slowed his approach. No one would want him here, Dephon least of all.
Brown eyes flashing dislike, Dephon stowed the treats out of sight and held his hands out, fingers clenched. “Guess which hand the sweet is in, and you can have it,” he taunted.
Gethyon stared at the outstretched fists and deeper, beyond the covering of flesh and blood to the truth within. “Neither.”
His trick exposed, the boy opened both hands in proof, glowing with spite. “Then I guess you don’t get one.”
Also, I'm admin for #sffsat for the next few weeks, so if you happen to notice I've broken the rules myself, please feel free to point that out. :P

Anti-Bullying Month - Donating royalties
4th-29th November is anti-bullying month, and as part of my contribution I'll be donating the royalties from my #YA #scifi novel Gethyon to the UK charity Childline, which supports children being bullied and abused. Gethyon seems a fitting choice since my male MC is bullied at the beginning of the story. Now, because of the way I receive my royalties (quarterly) I won't know my sales until December, or possibly March. I can, however, track my daily sales at Amazon. So what I will do is calculate my royalties for this month from those, and donate them at the end of November. Then, when I know my total sales elsewhere, I'll send a second payment to make up the difference. I've no idea how much of a contribution I'll be able to make since I'm not JK Rowling or anything, but I hope to make at least a small difference that may make life better for someone out there. Thank you in advance for your support.

Blurb:
Abandoned by his mother after his father’s death, Gethyon Rees feels at odds with his world and longs to travel the stars. But discovering he has the power to do so leaves him scarred for life. Worse, it alerts the Siah-dhu—a dark entity that seeks his kind for their special abilities—to his existence, and sets a bounty hunter on his trail.
When those same alien powers lead Gethyon to commit a terrible act, they also aid his escape. Marooned on the sea-world of Ulto Marinos, Gethyon and his twin sister must work off their debt to the Seagrafter captain who rescued them while Gethyon puzzles over their transportation. How has he done this? And what more is he capable of?
Before he can learn any answers, the Wardens arrive to arrest him for his crime. Can his powers save him now? And where will he end up next?
