Summer of Magic #BlogHop: A Time Traveller's Holiday #timetravel #scifi #romance
Welcome to the Summer of Magic Blog Hop! Since the topic is all about summer themes and the banner features a beach, I thought I'd post about the setting that inspired the tropical planet of Metraxi in my time travel romance series Redemption. I'm also going to share an excerpt from an as yet unpublished side story in the series about how my time travelling characters spend their summer.
I consider myself lucky to live in the historical town of Colchester in the UK (Britain's oldest recorded market town and once the capital of Roman Britain - Camulodunum - before being replaced by Londinium (London) after the Iceni rebellion. Colchester has had an eventful if violent past, and is close to plenty of other great places to visit. A ten minute bus ride or half hour walk takes you into the town centre. Go ten minutes the other way and you're out in the countryside or at our local zoo.
But drive half an hour toward the coast and you come to Frinton-on-Sea with its miles of golden sand. This is the place we spend most sunny weekends (fairly rare in the UK, lol) and large parts of the summer. It's usually crowded midday, but it's a fantastic place to just chill out by the sea and let the little monsters run wild!
So perhaps it's not so odd that the beach has played such a huge part in some of my books. I'm now going to share an as yet unpublished excerpt from one of the side stories in my time travel series, where my characters are enjoying a sunny morning on their adopted home planet of Metraxi...
Quin sighed. Living on Kasha-Asor was like a prolonged holiday, with all the benefits of sun, sea and sand but none of the expense or the prospect of it ending that would have soured it had she been on Earth. Not that she still didn't miss Earth, though. It's one thing to leave home knowing you can go back any time. Quite another to know you could never go back and it didn't exist any more.
Quin sighed again. Thinking about Earth always cast a shadow, and she didn't want to feel melancholy. It was gone. Finished. How could she still be mourning for it? Three hundred years of being sad for a world she hadn't cared about when she was living on it? Too long.
Instead she focused on her surroundings. A broad beach of pale pinkish sand and a sea such a brilliant shade of turquoise she wished she could have gemstones cut from it to make a necklace. Above her hung the glorious blue sky strewn with the odd wisp of white cloud. Behind her the blade shaped leaves of the giant bamboo whispered in the light sea breeze, a soothing sound attempting to lull her to sleep.
The wind stirring the greenery also tugged at the edge of her blue and black sarong and set goosebumps on her skin despite the day's heat. She'd been sitting in the shade too long now, keeping her fair skin out of the fierce Metraxian sun despite her ultraviolet infusion protecting it. She sat upright, no longer resting her back on the tree behind her, and wrapped her arms around her legs. Ferron should be back today. Her stomach twisted just a little. She had a suspicion there could be conflict. It was only natural that Keir's son would want to take the seawraith hunt like a native born Metraxian, but there was an aspect of the tradition that she hoped he'd not done despite embracing the islander life. She knew how Keir would react. He hadn't seemed to register when Ferron announced his intention to take the ritual trial of adulthood, and she'd deliberately not brought it up.
Talking of Keir... She glanced along the beach to the eastern of the crescent bay. The unmistakeable blue figure of Keir, accompanied by the half sized, red haired waif that was their daughter made their way along the sand, Seren splashing in the edge of the surf like flotsam. Quin waved, and Seren accelerated into a wild scamper across the sand toward her mother. Eight years old and growing like a weed, Seren had thrived on Kasha-Asor, as had her half brother Ferron, though he had a genetically engineered advantage and a theoretical ten year start on his half sister.
"Mummy, look what I found!" Seren proudly displayed a long spiral shell about ten inches long.
"Wow, that's beautiful." Quin took it, admiring the size and pastel turquoise coloring. "Looks like the horn of a unicorn."
"What's a unicorn?"
Again, that pang of having to explain something from a world and cultures lost forever. Quin drew in a breath and forced a smile. "It's a four legged mythical creature that had a horn on its head." Quin held the shell to her forehead to demonstrate, and Seren giggled, reclaiming her shell to copy.
"Like this?"
"Yup."
Seren frowned, her blue eyes as vivid as azuri flowers and the mirror of her father's. "What's myk-ee-thal mean?"
"Mythical. It means not real, imaginary."
Seren pouted. "So there aren't really any unicorns?"
Quin put the shell to Seren's forehead. "Only you."
Seren beamed before running back to Keir to show him how to be a unicorn. Quin laughed as Keir was forced to bend his head for the placing of the shell before Seren reclaimed it and ran off across the sands with her horn clasped to the top of her head.
Keir gave her a smile that made her heart melt before he dropped to her side and brushed a kiss over her cheek.

Happy Fourth Anniversary #amwriting #amcelebrating
Today is my 4th anniversary as a published author. Woot! It feels much longer, and yet I still feel like I've barely started. I have fifteen titles up at Goodreads, from short stories up to novels and an anthology, romantic and non-romance, scifi, urban fantasy and paranormal, for adults and young adults. I never imagined I'd get so far.
It also means my adorable blue hero Keir - my sanity saver - is also four today. Kinda. While Keir was originally published on the 7th of May 2012 by Lyrical Press, he was MIA from the 1st of January 2014 due to the sale of my publisher, not returning until the 7th of May 2015. I suppose the complication is sort of appropriate for a time traveller, right? I couldn't tell you the exact day of his 'birth' - that was back in the days when I used actual pen and paper to write with, and sadly didn't date much of what I wrote, but officially his birthday is the 17th August 2009, when I sat at my computer with his unfinished short story in my hand, a playlist featuring The Rasmus, and a burning need to rediscover myself. I did. It was an insane few weeks, but it made such a difference.

So here's to another four years and maybe another fifteen titles!

Last Day #giveaway #NetGalley #timetravel #scifi #romance
Today is a bonus day - the 29th February - and it's the last day for a couple of fun things.
First up, it's the last day to get Keir from NetGalley to read and review for free HERE.
Second, it's the last day to enter the international Goodreads giveaway for Keir's Fall in print. You can just click on the widget below.
From tomorrow, Keir's Fall will be available to read and review for free from NetGalley as well. You can find that HERE.
Status Update
Reunion is still being revised, but I still expect to make the 21st May release day and hold an event around that time.
The June project is in first round edits.
My RWA LERA Rebecca finalist Revived is having the ending rewritten for about the third time. Still hoping to release that some time this year, finances allowing.
When Dark Falls and Restless In Peaceville will shortly be coming out of KU, so if you were thinking of borrowing them, you've got about a week left to do so. I may put WDF back in at the end of March so that it runs alongside Quickshot for another 90 days, but after that...
Quickshot releases 31st March, but is available for pre-order at Amazon only. After 90 days in KU, it'll be available at other retailers as well.

Writing Update and Going AWOL #giveaway #NetGalley #amediting
From tomorrow I'm off the internet until the 21st for my usual school based holiday break from social media. But never fear! Various things will continue to run on automatic to keep you entertained (or not) while I'm gone. In the meantime, a quick update:
Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened - a YA dystopia novella set in our near future - will re-release on Monday the 15th across various online retailers. This was the last title I had contracted with the now deceased Lycaon Press, and the last I hadn't re-issued until now.
In other news, Reunion at Kasha-Asor - a side story in Keir's Redemption series - is in second round edits but currently still on target for release in May (psst there'll also be a special event then!). My planned June release is still awaiting my attention for first round edits. Gulp!
Have a good week!

Tuesday Teaser - Meet Jakhani #KeirsFall #scifi #romance #spaceopera
My last teaser from Keir's Fall for the year, and this time I'm introducing an important secondary character - Jakhani. He may not make a good first impression...
Jakhani watched as the soldiers brought more humans to the conversion chamber. Some cried, some begged, but most fought, struggling uselessly against the inhuman guards in their green armor. Their efforts were wasted. Each was strapped to a table in turn. Their shrieks haunted the chamber, echoing its vast length in a tortured chorus of protest and despair.
He turned his attention to the cables and tubing running above, carrying the green biosynthetic fluid used to replace their blood, ready for the bionic implants that would come later. It had taken him years to perfect the system. The room was a factory that took in raw humanoids and converted them into Tyra-Lee’s indomitable cybernetic army—the power behind her growing empire.
A sigh escaped his lips. It would take weeks to complete the latest batch, even at the rate of hundreds at a time. How many failures might there be in this harvesting? Hopefully, the latest adjustments had reduced it to a small percentage, perhaps two or three wasted per batch. There would always be those too weak or flawed to survive being transformed, or who reacted badly to the process. The final figures for this current collection should prove interesting.
The prisoners seemed never-ending, and they’d become a faceless blur by the time the scanner system flared red in alarm. Jakhani snapped out of his reverie and signaled the guards to halt. The last two through the arch dragged their captive along the ground, and he sighed again. Efficient they might be, but they rarely retained their intelligence after conversion. An unconscious, injured, or sick specimen was useless, even if it had proved his detection system functioned correctly. He gestured them to step aside and allow the process to continue, before grabbing the hair of the rejected one and lifting his head.
A tremor of uncertainty shook him. This was no human—at least, not of a kind he’d ever seen before. Intrigued by the anomaly, he instructed the guards to lay him on the end table so he could examine him. They then returned to their steady work, collecting more prisoners, while he investigated the unusual one. Blood smeared his skin, and dust and dirt obscured but could not disguise the odd color. A ragged cut following the hairline above his left temple and dark bruising around it explained the alarm.
Jakhani cleaned the wound, his interest piqued by the blue coloration as he worked. Humans came in a wide variation of forms and colorings, but never like this one. He was of medium height and slim build, well-muscled but still lean. Jakhani estimated the man to be in his mid-twenties or so, his body heavily tattooed. His personal scanner confirmed the stranger as human, genetically speaking, and yet the readings didn’t quite match anything in the records.
He shook his head, puzzling over what to do with this odd one. The usual procedure for rejects would be incineration, but medically he saw no reason to do so. Should he process the man anyway and see if he survived? Unconscious, he was no use to anyone, so Jakhani restrained him and left him to recover. There were more important things to be done.

#ScienceFiction #Fantasy Saturday #88 - What Next? #scifi #romance
Welcome to another #sffsat snippet, and the last of 2015. Wow, this year went fast. And I finally managed to get one new book out after five re-releases, even if it was late. Eep. I need to improve on that for 2016, right?
Anyway, I'm continuing from last week with Keir's Fall. Keir had just escaped rather explosively after being cornered in the munitions room by a handful of invading cybernetic soldiers. But there's one question burning in his mind that needs answering...
The pain eased, and he opened his eyes. He was out and up on the roof, under the ice-white glow of the full moon. He lay and watched smoke plume out of the hole he had escaped through. Nothing else moved. If the blast had not destroyed or disabled the soldiers, they would still have a hard time following him up now.
His violent eruption through the access had ripped the rifle from his back. A lucky thing, considering the damage it might have done to him if he had landed on it. Pain still burning across his shoulders, he pushed himself onto all fours and crawled across to reclaim his weapon then scuttled to the edge to look down.
Lights from the building and the large moon of Lyagnius revealed all. A brigade of Nercaandi soldiers marched in pairs across the gardens. Some had already ventured beyond the natural barrier of blue-gray boulders ringing the edge of the impact crater that housed the base. Keir leaned on the raised ledge of the roof as he watched them. Were they just scouting the area or looking specifically for him?
He tugged one hand through the black curls of his hair. What had they done with Quin?
And that's where I'm going to leave you and Keir hanging. Bwahahaa! Want to know what happens next? You can now pick up Keir's Fall at most reputable online retailers in digital format - print coming soon.
And book one is still 99 cents/Euros/pence until the end of the year.
In the meantime, go check out the other participants in Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday by clicking on the link under the banner below.

Crafting a Tyrant - The Inspiration #scifi #romance #spaceopera
But still, you have to have some kind of empathy with them. If you really, really hate the villain, will you want to read the book? Even just to see their butt kicked by the hero? Or will their character put you off so badly that you'll throw the book aside?
I love my villains to be dark and twisted. All of them got that way for a reason. All my villains have a story of their own. In the case of Tyra-Lee, her homicidal need to rule the galaxy stems from the imminent extinction of her race, and a passionate desire for humans. The Nercaandi don't just need humanity to make their soldiers. Tyra-Lee is searching for the perfect partner, one to rule the galaxy with her. She just wants everyone to kiss her feet in the process.
I didn't realise it until some time after that Tyra-Lee had come from a character in a vampire novel - The Queen of the Damned. In many ways, she's like Akasha. Physical perfect, and flaunts it. Power hungry, and yet totally assured that she's right to be so. That the only way is her way. Nercaandi don't trade - they conquer. Their biology has them set to bow to one dominant female, with all males and sub females subject to her will. Biology is hard to fight, and Tyra-Lee makes no attempt to do so. But will her desire for a certain male prove her undoing?
Blurb:
A seductive tyrant. A lost hero. And a galaxy about to fall...
It's been a year in paradise for Keir and Quin, but now the idyll is over. After Quin falls sick, they return to the hidden sanctuary of Lyagnius, and what she learns there will not only change their lives, but set them on a journey that could separate them forever.
When Keir falls victim to a ruthless Nercaandi Empress bent on conquering the galaxy with her cybernetic army, it will take all Quin's diminishing powers and the help of her son to find him. But what waits for her aboard the tyrant's ship will test her strength and the limits of their love, and put everything she cares about at risk. Including Keir.
With the galaxy itself about to fall, will she be able to save him?
Book Two of the Redemption series and part of the Travellers Universe.

The gateway opened to a wasteland of silt.
Keir followed Quin as she stepped out, now appreciating the heavy cloaks and
boots she had insisted they wear as the chill winds of this world tugged at his
clothing. Gray mud stretched as far as the eye could see, shimmering faintly
under a gray sky. Flickers of brightness came from shallow water that covered
the silt in wide patches, small ripples stirred in its surface by strong,
unchanging winds. Nothing broke the horizon; it was featureless and flat, the
faded sun hidden behind clouds that allowed no more than the odd bright ray of
light through.
“Is this Loganum?” Keir asked, raising his
voice over the eerie howl of the wind.
“No. This is a halfway point,” Quin said,
her voice distant as she stared straight ahead. “We always meet at a neutral
place.”
“Why?”
“Remember the Emissary and the Siah-dhu?”
she said, sending shivers through him.
He nodded, recalling all too well the
frightening force that had tried to consume Quin, and the terrifying consequences.
“They used a bounty hunter once who could
sense where we’d opened gateways if she was close to them. Using remote,
unpopulated worlds like this makes the openings harder to track.”
“How so?”
“Distance makes them seem dimmer. Difficult
to spot. Although they would have a hard time tracking Gethyon regardless.”
Keir sensed her pride in that fact. “He can open gateways anywhere. He doesn’t
need a power source to do it. He’s so much more talented than I am. But that’s
why I never see him, and why he never travels. It’s safer not to draw
attention.”
“You must miss him, though.”
“All the time, but it’s better this way.
Gethyon may have tricked and imprisoned a majority of the Siah-dhu, but, as
you’ve seen, there are still remnants hunting us.”
“How will he know you are here?”
“He’ll know.”
True to her prediction, a gateway opened
opposite them. A man stepped through, walking steadily toward them in a thick,
knee-length coat, his ragged red hair blowing around his face. He was taller
than Keir and heavier in build, with broad shoulders and a long, serious face.
There seemed very little of Quin in him, aside from the hair color. Wrinkles
creased the corners of the somber green eyes that regarded him with an
appraising look. Time had stood still for Quin, but her son showed his natural
age from a life spent on a single world.
As he came closer, he smiled at Quin and
reached out to her. She ran into his arms. The top of her head barely touched
his chin, making her appear more childlike than ever. Gethyon’s expression shifted
from happiness to puzzlement, his mouth opening to form a word that she stopped
with her fingers to his lips, as if willing him to silence.
Confusion wove through Keir’s thoughts. It
seemed a peculiar exchange of greetings. Gethyon released her to glance at
Keir, and Quin laughed, gesturing him over.
“Gethyon, this is Keir,” she said. “My husband.” To read more, please check out any of the buy links under the image at the top of the post, or you can visit Goodreads to download a free sample chapter.
