Celebratory Snippet: Keir by Pippa Jay #scifi #romance via @pippajaygreen

Today I'm sharing something of my own from book one of my time travel romance series. Here, the party's just getting started but the heroine has been warned off remaining, a suggestion she doesn't take well.

Excerpt:

“If you think we should leave, say so now,” she told Keir, her tone challenging.
“You believe you should remain?”
“Absolutely. I don’t like it when strangers come looking for me. Last time it was a bounty hunter working for the Siah-dhu.” She shivered and made a face. “But I can send you back to Lyagnius if you’d prefer.”
“I will not leave you here alone, not if there is a chance you are in danger.”
“Good. I wanted you to stay.” She grinned her approval and finished her drink. “Would you like to dance?”
Keir stared at the dancers. Although the steps were unknown to him, he recognized the formality of it as akin to something that might have been performed in the Adalucien court. But it had been twenty years since he had learned that.
“I do not know how.”
“Nor do I,” she admitted. “But it looks like fun.” She extended her hand to him in a slow, deliberate movement.
His breath caught. He stared at her open palm. Of its own volition, his hand moved until his fingers hovered just above hers. Then he withdrew it.
“Quin, I—”
“It doesn’t matter,” she said, a fraction too quickly. “We don’t have to hold hands for the next one.”

Release Day: Gethyon (A Travellers Universe Novel) #scifi #adventure #timetravel #excerpt

Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.
Gethyon is back! And with additional new and bonus content.

Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves: a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the unwelcome return of Tarquin Secker--the mother who abandoned him--and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it'll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It'll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.

A science fiction adventure novel previously published by BURST (Champagne Books), and part of the Travellers Universe. A 2014 SFR Galaxy Award Winner for Most Awesome Psychic Talent and a 2015 EPIC eBook Awards finalist in the Science Fiction category. Also now includes the SF short story The Bones of the Sea.

Gethyon
A Scifi Adventure Novel

Excerpt:

They reached the wide archway that led from the vast tower foyer into one of the main thoroughfares of Penrith complex. Gethyon leaned against the wall and passed Kauri to Sky, both of whom protested. “Just for a moment,” he assured them, sucking in deep breaths. He stared down at his scarred palm, trying to dredge up some power. “I don’t think I can open a gateway here.”
Sky’s white skin meant he was incapable of turning any paler, but the crystalline eyes widened. “Then where?”
Gethyon ran through their options. There was no psi-energy source here that he could use, not like on Lyagnius. The only alternative would be to reopen one of his old gateways, where the barrier was already broken. It was the method Quin used: her talent didn’t extend to opening new gateways as he could.
“We need to go back to Lyagnius.”
Sky shifted Kauri as she squealed in his ear, overriding even the endless sirens and the scream of the approaching storm. “Then we’ll have to run.”
The walls shook as they ran, the ground trembling underfoot. Kauri screamed louder, and the sound ripped through his head until they ducked into the sub-city. Here, the shrieking of the Siah-dhu was muted, an eerie howl on the edge of hearing. They scurried through the tunnel until they reached the last gateway Gethyon had made.
“Here,” he announced weakly as Sky made to run onward. The haemovore stopped and waited. Gethyon lifted his hand, reached for gateway…and felt nothing.
Panic rose in black, chilling waves. Kauri wailed, her voice a blade through his skull.
Focus! He closed his eyes, clenched his fists, and tried to seal his mind against her cries, against the banshee call of the Siah-dhu as the darkness of it seeped into him, into every corner of his mind. It smothered all light, every thread of power within him. He dug his nails into his palms, used the pain to fuel his anger, to spark the flames deep in his soul.
Silver and blue flickers answered, small and fleeting. He plowed his grief and fury into them, the sharpness of his loss and the blind rage of his hatred for Jinx. The energy flared into life, so furiously that his knees buckled at the wildness of it. Gethyon gasped. It wasn’t the same as before. This was the raw power that had been part of his awakening talent as a child, but summoned by force, not a frenzied release spurred by panic. It roared through his veins, fire and ice, splinters and flame that melded and scorched along his nerves. He felt as though his skin would peel back and char at the ferocity of it, his blood vaporize, his bones melt. With a scream, he opened his eyes, and blue fire flared across his vision as he raised his palm and sent the full force of it outward. Azure lightning surged into the gateway, shattered the seal, and blew it open.
“Go,” he commanded, and Sky dived through with Kauri screeching in his arms.
A cold wind blasted his back, and Gethyon turned his head, glancing over his left shoulder. Darkness seethed into the tunnel behind, a billowing, writhing mass of shadow tinged with sullen red and lurid purple in his heightened vision.
He couldn’t move. His feet seemed pinned to the floor, his muscles locked into rigid immobility. The Siah-dhu howled at him, their voice leaching all will and power from him. Despite the sparks of energy within him, the darkness writhed through his gut, gnawing with jagged teeth as it twisted though his mind. It was hunger magnified a thousand times, as if the vacuum of space had opened inside him. He fell to his knees.
Gethyon. Not quite a voice, not quite any sound he’d ever heard, the Siah-dhu called his name. The roiling mass drew closer. Ice blasted over him and stole all the breath and warmth from him, sucking the life out of him.
“No.” The single word snatched him back from the edge. He hadn’t come so far or lost so much to surrender.
As the Siah-dhu pulsed toward him, intent on his consumption, he forced himself up again and turned his back on the shadows. It was the hardest thing he’d ever done, to resist that pull into oblivion. The edges of the black cloud twined around him, incorporeal fingers striving to grasp him, seething forward to swallow him…
The world disappeared.

A Gentleman And A Rogue by Stephanie Burkhart #timetravel #steampunk #romance #giveaway via @stephburkhart

A Gentleman and a Rogue
by Stephanie Burkhart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Lady Keira Russell is destined to bring compressed natural gas to Britain. Her inner courage and mental toughness rarely falter – except when Prince Edmund Windsor is involved.
Edmund of Wales is from the future. His last jaunt through history muffed up the time line. Now, he's here to set it straight and win Keira's heart.
For Keira, if it isn't one obstacle, it's another. Queen Victoria has sponsored a competition to find a cleaner fuel source than coal. Keira's father is trying to build a windmill and the Ridgecrofts are working with gasoline. Then there's Edmund, whose sensual kisses and heated stares distract her down to her bones.
Keira has a choice: trust Edmund's notorious mischief-making or put her faith in Queen Victoria to make the right decision, but if Keira makes the wrong choice, the future of Great Britain will be changed forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

The song ended and Edmund grabbed her hand, tugging her toward the nearest hallway. At first, she wanted to protest; call out for her father and defy Edmund's wishes, but then reason kicked in. She wanted -- no, needed -- answers. And, she had plenty of questions.

They entered the main wing, and passed two rooms before Edmund opened a door and dragged her inside. Books littered the shelves. The library. A beam of light from a full moon shined through the window, casting Edmund's features in sharp, contrasting shadows. He leaned against the door and crossed his arms. His eyes narrowed, giving his expression a dark, hard edge. He looked like a devil in this moment. She steeled her shoulders, ready to do battle with him.

Silence grew between them as they both set their postures. Damn Edmund. She wanted to kiss the devil senseless. Thankfully, she still had her wits.

"What are you doing with Jonas Byron?" Edmund's voice was cold and exact.

"Dancing." She surprised herself with the ease of her retort.

"Looked more like flirting to me."

"Jealous?"

A muscle twitched in his jaw. "No."

"You are a horrible liar."

"Keira, you can't trust him."

She placed her hands on her hips. "Curious, you're the second man tonight to tell me that."

"Grayson has your best interests at heart. You need to listen to him."

"He's been missing for four years." She paused, glaring at him. "Like you have. And I thought you weren't coming back."

"I'm here now, and I'm not leaving you again."

She tilted her head and laughed. Oh, yes, he'd leave her again, and she had no intention of letting her heart get broken.

Edmund lunged forward, placed his hands on her waist, and pulled her against the length of his hard, muscled body, trapping her arms between them so her hands rested on his chest. His emerald eyes flamed with desire. Her heart turned over in response. His unique scent, spice and currants, weakened her resolve. As her memories flooded through her mind, her lips ached for his.

"God, Keira, don't test me like this."

Victorian Scoundrel by Stephanie Burkhart #steampunk #timetravel #romance #giveaway via @StephBurkhart

Victorian Scoundrel
by Stephanie Burkhart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
It's 2011 and compressed natural gas has taken over from the coal producing steam machines of the Victorian Age. Alice Windsor, Princess of York, follows her mischief-making cousin, Edmund of Wales, back to 1851 where Prince Albert is hosting Britain's Great Exhibition.
Alice soon finds herself over her head in trouble. Edmund is determined to help Prince Albert build a dirigible and the prime minister appears intent in preventing her from stopping Edmund. Alice knows it's too early for the massive flying machine to take to the air. Complicating matters is the passionate Grayson Kentfield, Earl of Swinton. Alice can't stop her pulse from pounding when she's near him.
Can Alice give her heart to a man from the past while working to stop Edmund from changing history?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

She nibbled on her lower lip, a curious habit she had. When she was indecisive, perhaps? Then she drew the necklace over her head, giving it to him. He placed the coin flat in the palm of his hand, and let the chain dangle through his fingers. It was bronze or brass, with a strange sequence of numbers and letters. He furrowed his brow. Alice bent over and used her finger to push her glasses firmly back onto the bridge of her nose.

"It's some type of alpha-numeric code," Grayson mused out loud.

Alice looked on, a murky expression on her face. "Perhaps."

Grayson looked up. "I've seen a similar code on the datamancers they introduced in Parliament."

"What's a datamancer?" she asked.

He tried not to get lost in those soulful cerulean eyes of hers. "You don't know what a datamancer is?"

 "No."

"It thinks for itself--"

"Grayson, what's in your hand?"

Grayson and Alice turned in the direction of the door. Sir John briskly walked toward them escorted by a soldier and another gentleman Grayson recognized as the prince's secretary.

Summer of Magic #BlogHop: A Time Traveller's Holiday #timetravel #scifi #romance

Welcome to the Summer of Magic Blog Hop! Since the topic is all about summer themes and the banner features a beach, I thought I'd post about the setting that inspired the tropical planet of Metraxi in my time travel romance series Redemption. I'm also going to share an excerpt from an as yet unpublished side story in the series about how my time travelling characters spend their summer.
I consider myself lucky to live in the historical town of Colchester in the UK (Britain's oldest recorded market town and once the capital of Roman Britain - Camulodunum - before being replaced by Londinium (London) after the Iceni rebellion. Colchester has had an eventful if violent past, and is close to plenty of other great places to visit. A ten minute bus ride or half hour walk takes you into the town centre. Go ten minutes the other way and you're out in the countryside or at our local zoo.

But drive half an hour toward the coast and you come to Frinton-on-Sea with its miles of golden sand. This is the place we spend most sunny weekends (fairly rare in the UK, lol) and large parts of the summer. It's usually crowded midday, but it's a fantastic place to just chill out by the sea and let the little monsters run wild!
So perhaps it's not so odd that the beach has played such a huge part in some of my books. I'm now going to share an as yet unpublished excerpt from one of the side stories in my time travel series, where my characters are enjoying a sunny morning on their adopted home planet of Metraxi...

Excerpt:
Quin sighed. Living on Kasha-Asor was like a prolonged holiday, with all the benefits of sun, sea and sand but none of the expense or the prospect of it ending that would have soured it had she been on Earth. Not that she still didn't miss Earth, though. It's one thing to leave home knowing you can go back any time. Quite another to know you could never go back and it didn't exist any more.
Quin sighed again. Thinking about Earth always cast a shadow, and she didn't want to feel melancholy. It was gone. Finished. How could she still be mourning for it? Three hundred years of being sad for a world she hadn't cared about when she was living on it? Too long.
Instead she focused on her surroundings. A broad beach of pale pinkish sand and a sea such a brilliant shade of turquoise she wished she could have gemstones cut from it to make a necklace. Above her hung the glorious blue sky strewn with the odd wisp of white cloud. Behind her the blade shaped leaves of the giant bamboo whispered in the light sea breeze, a soothing sound attempting to lull her to sleep.
The wind stirring the greenery also tugged at the edge of her blue and black sarong and set goosebumps on her skin despite the day's heat. She'd been sitting in the shade too long now, keeping her fair skin out of the fierce Metraxian sun despite her ultraviolet infusion protecting it. She sat upright, no longer resting her back on the tree behind her, and wrapped her arms around her legs. Ferron should be back today. Her stomach twisted just a little. She had a suspicion there could be conflict. It was only natural that Keir's son would want to take the seawraith hunt like a native born Metraxian, but there was an aspect of the tradition that she hoped he'd not done despite embracing the islander life. She knew how Keir would react. He hadn't seemed to register when Ferron announced his intention to take the ritual trial of adulthood, and she'd deliberately not brought it up.
Talking of Keir... She glanced along the beach to the eastern of the crescent bay. The unmistakeable blue figure of Keir, accompanied by the half sized, red haired waif that was their daughter made their way along the sand, Seren splashing in the edge of the surf like flotsam. Quin waved, and Seren accelerated into a wild scamper across the sand toward her mother. Eight years old and growing like a weed, Seren had thrived on Kasha-Asor, as had her half brother Ferron, though he had a genetically engineered advantage and a theoretical ten year start on his half sister.
"Mummy, look what I found!" Seren proudly displayed a long spiral shell about ten inches long.

"Wow, that's beautiful." Quin took it, admiring the size and pastel turquoise coloring. "Looks like the horn of a unicorn."
"What's a unicorn?"
Again, that pang of having to explain something from a world and cultures lost forever. Quin drew in a breath and forced a smile. "It's a four legged mythical creature that had a horn on its head." Quin held the shell to her forehead to demonstrate, and Seren giggled, reclaiming her shell to copy.
"Like this?"
"Yup."
Seren frowned, her blue eyes as vivid as azuri flowers and the mirror of her father's. "What's myk-ee-thal mean?"
"Mythical. It means not real, imaginary."
Seren pouted. "So there aren't really any unicorns?"
Quin put the shell to Seren's forehead. "Only you."
Seren beamed before running back to Keir to show him how to be a unicorn. Quin laughed as Keir was forced to bend his head for the placing of the shell before Seren reclaimed it and ran off across the sands with her horn clasped to the top of her head.
Keir gave her a smile that made her heart melt before he dropped to her side and brushed a kiss over her cheek.
Couldn't resist sharing a picture of my hero!

Let's Eat! Time Travellers Soup #scifi #timetravel #romance #giveaway

This month Audra Middleton has invited authors like me to share literary inspired recipes with their fans. Be sure to enter the giveaway and check out as many authors and recipes as you can!

My contribution to the hop is a recipe for Time Travellers Soup aka Throw In Anything Vegetable Soup, inspired by Keir (Book One of Redemption). My characters are both time travellers, hence the name. The soup is actually in the story, though my heroine refers to it just as plain old vegetable soup, but it's one of the few things I can cook--it's sooooo easy. It's also quick, healthy, filling, and uses up any random odd vegetables you have lying around that you don't want to go to waste. Even my kids will eat this (as long as I don't tell my 11yo there are parsnips or sweet potatoes in it, shhh!).

Thrown in Anything Vegetable Soup

Ingredients:
Cooking oil
1 onion, red or white
Mixed root vegetables of your choice (sweet potato, potato, squash, pumpkin, leek, peppers, carrots, parsnips, swede etc)
Bag of leaf salad (kale is currently my favourite, though you could use spinach, rocket, mixed leaf etc)
Lentils if you like them
Water
Vegetable stock cubes

Method:
1. Take a large cooking pot/saucepan, and pour in enough oil to cover the bottom. Add one chopped onion (and sliced leek and/or pepper if using)
2. Chop/dice your mixed root vegetables (the smaller the pieces the quicker they will cook, and the less household energy you'll use!). I generally chop enough to half fill my big soup pot.
3. Gently fry the onion until soft, then add your chopped root vegetables and make sure they're all coated in the oil. Leave to sweat on a low heat with the lid on for ten minutes.
4. Add enough water to just cover the root veg, plus a stock cube, and lentils if you want them. Then add enough leaf vegetable to fill the rest of the pot to the rim (this will then steam cook, preserving the goodness!).
5. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook until all the root vegetables are soft. Blend to your preferred consistency.

This is a great way to use up odd vegetables, and easy enough that most people can cook it (well, I manage, lol).

As part of the Let's Eat! Blog Hop, I'm giving away an ebook of Keir as part of the rafflecopter, but you can also check out the free books listed in the left hand sidebar of my blog for more reading fodder.
